The importance of vaccinating K-12 students cannot be overstated â staying up to date on vaccinations protects yourself and others. In fact, vaccine administration is estimated to prevent 4-5 million deaths per year, according to 2020 World Health Organization research.
Parents and guardians can ensure that their children comply with state- and school-mandated vaccine requirements by checking with their schools and state’s health department. Nurses advise guardians to schedule annual physicals for school-aged children in early summer so students are vaccinated in time for the school year.

Is It Legal For Schools To Require Vaccinations
According to a Kaiser Family Foundation post, the evolving legal landscape regarding COVID-19 vaccination requirements contains numerous uncertainties. The federal government has limited authority to require vaccines, but states have long mandated immunization to protect public health.
Today, all states require vaccines for K-12 school attendance, with exemptions for medical issues and religious objections. Select states impose adult vaccinations on healthcare staff and patients in healthcare facilities but not the general public.
Private employers can require vaccination, but some states are restricting vaccine mandates as a condition of employment, allowing employees to opt out.
What does this mean for colleges and universities that plan to impose vaccination requirements? Public institutions that institute COVID-19 vaccine mandates may be subject to state lawsuits or legislative action.

The Pharmacy Math Problem
The first important point is that West Virginia opted out of a federal partnership program that relies on the giant CVS and Walgreens pharmacy chains to deliver vaccines to nursing homes. Instead, the state is relying on a network consisting mostly of local pharmacies.
West Virginia has also been praised for how it used the two weeks between the first vaccine authorization and when the first doses arrived to plan the rollout.
The big difference is in the numbers. Under the federal partnership program, CVS planned to have about 1,000 of its pharmacies as vaccine hubs to serve some 25,000 nursing home facilities across the nation, a CVS official told The Wall Street Journal in early December. Similarly, a Walgreens official said his company would have 800 to 1,000 Walgreens pharmacies to serve as hubs for about 23,000 nursing home facilities.
That meant each CVS and Walgreens pharmacy on average planned to serve about 25 nursing homes.
West Virginia chose to mobilize independent and chain pharmacies alike, rather than relying just on CVS and Walgreens. A total of 250 pharmacies participated in vaccinating 214 nursing homes. In other words, each nursing home on average is served by more than one pharmacy.
Nursing Students May Face Stricter Vaccine Requirements
Clinical requirements in nursing schools have changed in response to COVID-19. Some states, including California and Wisconsin, established emergency waivers that reduced the required clinical hours for graduation. Individual nursing schools initiated solutions limiting students’ face-to-face contact with patients, such as participation in virtual simulations, COVID-19 call centers, and telehealth.
More widespread immunization rates could enable nursing students to see patients in person, but healthcare professionals anticipate that vaccine mandates will be strictly enforced.
“There is the concern from clinical partners about staff and students who are working with patients and the potential for the spread of COVID-19 and other pathogens,” explains Audrey Auer, Ph.D., a nursing education director.

New Cms Regulation Will Require Vaccination For Nursing Home Staff
On August 18th, President Biden announced that his Administration will require nursing homes to mandate staff to be vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition for facilities to receive funding from Medicare and Medicaid. This new requirement would apply to nearly 15,000 nursing home facilities, which employ approximately 1.6 million workers and serve approximately 1.3 million nursing home residents, according to the White House. The vaccine mandate is set to take effect this fall and will be issued as a CMS regulation.
How Do I Determine If My General Health Is Suitable For A Nursing Career
Consider:
- Nurses work either 8 or 12-hour shifts. This time is spent standing, walking, bending, and lifting, supporting, or transferring people or objects. Nurses must be able to move quickly and efficiently, often in tight spaces.
- Nurses need to be able to support and turn patients without harming themselves or the patient.
- Nurses must be physically fit in order to be active throughout the workday. Leg, back, or foot problems may interfere. Anyone who has limited muscle strength or physical endurance may also have difficulties.
- Nurses perform skills requiring a high level of manual dexterity and coordination . Anyone with poor eye-hand coordination may have difficulties with these tasks.
- Nurses give emotional support to others and work in stressful, anxiety-producing situations. This may be difficult for anyone who has emotional or psychiatric problems or difficulty dealing with their own stress and anxiety.
- Nurses wash their hands frequently with antiseptic soaps and wear latex/rubber gloves. If you are latex-sensitive or have a latex allergy, you may not meet the health requirements, as the Nursing program and the practicum settings may not be able to accommodate your latex allergy/sensitivity.
- Skin must be intact, since exposed lesions pose a problem to both students and patients. A skin condition resulting in chronic open lesions is likely to prevent you from meeting the health requirement.

Hospital Leaders Address Issue As Calls For Mandates Mount And Other Systems Impose Them
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. Ballad Health CEO Alan Levine supports the logic and science behind growing calls for health care employers to mandate employee COVID vaccines but he said the times not yet right to make Ballad employees choose between getting vaccinated or losing their jobs.
I agree fundamentally with what the hospital association is saying and with what other hospital systems are now doing with the mandates, but those systems are in different environments and markets, Levine told News Channel 11 Wednesday.
Levine referred to the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Associations Monday release supporting vaccine requirements. Tuesday, Phoenix-based Banner Health became one of the latest systems to mandate vaccinations a move affecting 52,000 employees.

And about an hour after the Wednesday interview, the American Hospital Association weighed in supporting mandates.
But Levine said Ballad is walking a tightrope as it works to persuade the 38 percent of its staff that remains unvaccinated to take the jab.
And those workers are critical right now as Ballad continues to grapple with a serious nursing shortage.
Given that prospect, at least on Wednesday, Levine said Ballad was uncomfortable with a mandate until the FDA has given full approval.
Whether Colleges Require Covid
Politicians in 20 states so far Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming have signed legislation or executive orders barring COVID-19 proof of vaccination requirements. Indiana’s attorney general said state universities may require COVID-19 vaccines but can’t force students to provide proof.
All states require colleges to accommodate students who refuse a vaccine for medical reasons. Most states save for California, Maine, Mississippi, New York, West Virginia, and now Connecticut also allow exemptions for religious reasons.
At least one public university system in a state that has not barred such proof of vaccination the Ohio State University said it will not mandate the vaccine. According to the university, students will only be asked about their vaccination status for the purpose of outbreak monitoring. Most institutions that have not mandated COVID-19 vaccines plan to incentivize students instead.
In Ohio, children ages 12-17 who received at least one COVID-19 shot were eligible to win full-ride scholarships to any of the system’s 14 campuses. And New York raffled off college scholarships to the City University of New York and State University of New York systems.

What can other states learn from West Virginias success story?
First, to speed up the vaccine rollout, the US needs to address the bottlenecksthe shortages of resources, especially staffing and points of distribution, needed for vaccination.
Second, incentives matter. In designing vaccination programs, it is important to ensure providers are motivated to commit resources to speed up vaccination. Market competition is a powerful mechanism to achieve that.
Third, state and local leadership can make a difference. While a lack of federal leadership has been cited as a reason for the slow vaccine rollout, West Virginia succeeded in vaccinating nursing homes because it could be more nimble outside the federal program. State and local leaders can succeed when they are held accountable and when they proactively manage the process.
The US is only at the beginning of the Covid-19 vaccination process. Just over 3% of the countrys population had been vaccinated as of Jan. 13, and there are many challenges on the road ahead. The complex cold storage requirements of mRNA vaccines can make reaching rural areas difficult without careful planning and logistical support. Refusals to get the vaccine mean heard immunity can be harder to reach. These all have implications as vaccinations go on.

But at some schools, not having proof of vaccination can prevent you from living in campus housing. In some rare cases, students could face expulsion.
Colleges are not new to disease outbreaks either, and in many cases those outbreaks led to vaccination campaigns on campus. This can be easier for private colleges than for public ones, though some university systems, including the University of California, have power dictated by the state constitution.
