Shingles Medicare Billing Problems
Heres a quick reminder about a billing issue that we commonly resolve for our clients. Many doctors continue to bill this to Medicare Part B, and then the bill gets rejected. Once the rejection happens, far too many Medicare beneficiaries just pay these bills without questioning them. Who Should Not Get The Shingles Vaccine
Certain people should not receive the vaccine or should wait before getting the Shingrix shingles vaccine.
Who Should Avoid the Shingles Vaccine
- People who have had a severe allergic reaction to any component of the vaccine or to a previous Shingrix vaccination
- People who have tested negative for immunity to the varicella zoster virus
If you currently have shingles, you should wait until you recover before getting the shot. Even after you have had shingles, the painful condition can return.
Pregnant and breastfeeding women should also wait before getting the shingles vaccine.
If you have a moderate or severe illness that starts suddenly something doctors call an acute illness you should usually wait until you fully recover before getting the shingles shot.
How Much Of Medicare Covers The Shingles Vaccine
The shingles vaccine is not provided by Medicare Part A or Medicare Part B . This also means that if you have a Medicare Supplement or a Medicare Advantage plan, , they will not cover it either. In general, Medicare Part D prescription drug programs cover all commonly available vaccines that are needed to avoid sickness. The two commonly produced shingles vaccinations, Shingrix and Zostavax are only provided by Medicare if you have a stand-alone Part D drug plan or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes Part D drug coverage.
The shingles vaccination is required to be covered by Medicare Part D programs. Most entail a copayment, which varies greatly between plans. If you havent fulfilled your plans deductible for the year, youll almost certainly have to pay a majority of the amount.

What Parts Of Medicare Cover The Shingles Vaccine
According to Medicare.gov, a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan should cover all preventive vaccines, including the shingles shot. Medicare Advantage plans are typically a bundle of Medicare Part A, Part B, and Part D. As long as your Advantage plan contains Part D, you should have coverage for the shingles shot. Some people call this plan Medicare Advantage with drug coverage.

How Much Will You Pay For Shingles Vaccines
You can find both shingles vaccines on your Part D plan formulary or listing of covered medications. Check to see into which tier the vaccine falls the tier will define how much your insurer will pay and how much you will have to pay.14
If your doctors office will provide the vaccination, check to be sure they can bill your plan directly. That way, youll have only the copay. Otherwise, you may have to make the full payment upfront and file with your plan for reimbursement. Also, check to be sure that the doctors fee for administering the shot is covered as part of your plans allowable charge.13
Youll probably pay the least amount out-of-pocket by being vaccinated at a pharmacy thats within your drug plans network. But if you havent met your deductible for the year on your drug plan, you may pay full price for the vaccine.
If you havent had your shingles vaccine yet and youre selecting a Medicare Advantage plan during the Open Enrollment Period, be sure its one of the medications on whatever plan you choose.
For How Long Does Medicare Cover Chiropractor Visits
A main concern among patients is that Medicare will cover some chiropractic visits, but not all. However, this is not the case. With Medicare there is no limit on the number of chiropractic treatments you may receive, as long as you cover your deductible, continue paying the 20% fee, and a provider deems the treatment medically necessary.

Does Medicare Cover Shingrix Or Zostavax
Many Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage plans provide coverage for Shingrix and/or Zostavax.
- Medicare Part D plans provide coverage exclusively for prescription drugs.
- Medicare Advantage plans provide coverage for all Medicare Part A and Part B benefits, and most Medicare Advantage plans also cover prescription drugs. Some plans also offer dental, vision and hearing benefits, along with a range of other benefits that Original Medicare doesn’t cover.
Both Medicare Advantage plans and Part D plans are sold by private insurance companies.

Who Needs The Shingles Vaccine
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends the shingles vaccine for people 50 and older. It is a manufactured inactivated vaccine intended to prevent shingles. The vaccine is administered in two separate doses given by intramuscular injection, separated by two to six months.
The shingles vaccine is considered an important vaccine for seniors because our immune system weakens as we age. The recommendation for vaccination is based on the potential severity of symptoms and long-term complications.
A shingles vaccine called Zostavax is no longer used in the United States as of November 2020. If you received that vaccine, the CDC recommends talking with your doctor about getting the Shingrix vaccine.

An Overview Of Medicare
Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people age 65 and older who are disabled or have end-stage renal disease .
The Medicare program covers a broad range of medical services, and it does not charge premiums for enrollees.
However, certain copayments and coinsurance amounts are associated with certain medical services. As a result, some services are excluded from coverage altogether.
If you get shingles when youre over 65, Medicare might cover the cost of a vaccine to prevent future cases.
However, if you have a secondary insurance policy, the shingles shot may be covered by that policy instead of Medicare.
If your employer offers health care coverage, that plan may also cover the cost of your shingles vaccine.
Does Original Medicare Cover The Shingles Vaccine
Neither Part A nor Part B of Original Medicare covers the shingles vaccines.
However, Medicare Part D does offer coverage on all commercially available vaccines that are needed to prevent illnesses including vaccines for shingles. Most drug plans will cover at least 50% of each drugs retail price. The average price of the Shingrix vaccine is around $150-$200 per shot and for Zostavax its around $220 $240 per dose .

How Pneumococcal Vaccines Work
Streptococcus pneumoniae is a kind of bacteria that causes pneumococcal disease. Besides pneumonia, this bacteria may also cause other serious diseases that include meningitis and bacteremia, according to the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases. All of these diseases have been associated with high fatality rates, particularly in vulnerable populations. The bacteria can spread through respiratory droplets .
The CDC says that there are currently two vaccines that have been approved for use to help you develop an immunity to this bacteria:
- Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccination PPSV23: This vaccine is commonly suggested for adults over 65 or with certain risk factors.
- Pneumococcal conjugate vaccination PCV13:This vaccine is recommended for adults who are over 65.
In some cases, the CDC recommends a second dose of PPSV23, but at least five years should elapse between doses. Also, both vaccines may be recommended for certain adults with risk factors for developing one of the diseases.
Treatment For Side Effects
Most people will exhibit unpleasant side effects when they take medication to treat pain from shingles. These can include headaches, nausea, dizziness, or trouble sleeping.
Now, even though your physician may prescribe medication to help manage these side effects, Medicare will not pay for them.
