Most animals avoid people, but they may attack if they feel threatened, are protecting their young or territory, or if they are injured or ill. Animal bites and scratches can lead to serious diseases such as rabies.
Follow these tips to protect yourself:
- Do not touch or feed any animals you do not know.
- Do not allow animals to lick open wounds, and do not get animal saliva in your eyes or mouth.
- Avoid rodents and their urine and feces.
- Traveling pets should be supervised closely and not allowed to come in contact with local animals.
- If you wake in a room with a bat, seek medical care immediately. Bat bites may be hard to see.
All animals can pose a threat, but be extra careful around dogs, bats, monkeys, sea animals such as jellyfish, and snakes. If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, immediately:
- Wash the wound with soap and clean water.
- Go to a doctor right away.
- Tell your doctor about your injury when you get back to the United States.

My first recommendation is that you seek proper, qualified, medical advice from a physician or clinic specializing in travel medicine. Getting medical advice from total strangers on the internet is never a particularly good plan and no matter how well-meaning we all may be, you may have medical issues which contra-indicate anything we may tell you.
That said, my doctor confirmed our regular shots were up to date and recommended we all be vaccinated against Hepatitis A as Hep A is endemic to the region. I know some physicians also recommend Hep B vaccinations but my doctor advised that this is a much lower risk as infection is related to such things as exchanges of bodily fluids and/or blood transfusions.
To the best of my recollection, Hep A involves two shots several months apart to provide maximum, long term protection. If you’ve only got three weeks until your vacation, you may be out of time but I’m pretty sure that the initial shot gives some protection.
You can get pretty decent protection from one dose of Hep A vaccine.

The quality of care varies greatly throughout the country.
Private hospitals usually offer good-quality care but are generally expensive. Most wont agree to deal directly with medical insurance companies and will require payment in advance.

Mental health services are extremely limited in Mexico, particularly outside of Mexico City.
Make sure you get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays.

What Is The Climate Like In Mexico
Because of its size, Mexico has a diverse climate.
The Tropic of Cancer splits the country into temperate and tropical zones. Regions north of the 24th parallel have a cooler climate during the winter months. Regions to the south have a more constant climate throughout the year. On the coast on both sides of Mexico, the climate is generally hot and humid, especially in the summer.
In contrast, Mexico Citys temperatures can drop to freezing in the winter. Areas of higher elevation can even see snow during these months. In Boston, Mayor Michelle Wu said the city’s proof-of-vaccination mandate for bars, restaurants and gyms, which was imposed Jan. 15, could be lifted this week.
Such requirements were never imposed in Texas or Florida, which have recorded the second- and third-highest numbers of Covid cases and deaths since the start of the pandemic, according to NBC News figures. In fact, any business in Florida that requires proof of vaccination faces a $5,000 fine for each person it asks.
Texas’ and Florida’s woeful statistics are eclipsed only by those in California, the country’s most populous state.
But in California, where nearly 70 percent of the population is fully vaccinated, vaccination requirements vary from place to place. Los Angeles, West Hollywood and Culver City mandate that businesses check for vaccination proof, for example, whereas the City Council in nearby Santa Monica voted against such a rule this month. That was largely because 91 percent of its residents have gotten at least one shot, the Santa Monica Daily Press reported.

Violence from drug cartels is a major problem in Mexico. Do not travel out alone after dark, especially in heavily populated urban areas. Always be alert, and look out for strange behavior. Keep track of your belongings, as pickpocketing and other forms of petty theft are common. There have been instances of kidnappings by cartels in various parts of the country.
Possession of small amounts of narcotics is legal in Mexico, but it is best to avoid using drugs at all. The legal system is much harsher than in Canada. Consult with locals to find out where it is safe to travel without a guide, and what areas to avoid after the sun sets. They will be able to provide the most accurate information.
When swimming on the beach, look out for riptides. They can be difficult to detect but very strong. Be sure to use sunscreen, and be aware of jellyfish.
If you are travelling by bus, do not put your bag in the storage room of the bus. This is an easy way to have your belongings stolen. If you plan on using a taxi, call a taxi service and request one instead of hailing one from the street. Rideshare services like Uber are available in Mexico.

What Are The Entry Requirements For Mexico From The Uk
Travellers whether fully vaccinated or not do not currently need to show proof of a negative Covid test to enter Mexico, but they do need to register on the Mexico Vuela Seguro Platform before boarding their flight to Mexico, and should show the QR code upon arrival at the airport. They must also fill out a Health Questionnaire before arrival, containing details such as flight and contact details, recent travel history and health information. The land border between the US and Mexico is currently closed for all non-essential travel. Tourists should also fill out an immigration form, which they should keep on-hand when they enter and leave Mexico. These should be available on your flight, or can be filled out online in advance.
As with any overseas trip, its recommended that you check current travel advice in the days before departing the UK, as this can change regularly. We also recommend purchasing valid travel insurance with Covid cover in case of any changes during your trip.

As far as I know you do not need a vaccination for Tulum. Have been going to Mexico for years and have never needed a vac. Enjoy
There is a post about Hepatitis A going around in Tulum. You might want to search for that post. But, I did ask my doctor and was recommended that I get this vaccination prior to our trip. She mentioned that most of Mexico is Hepatitis A risky so it’s better to be protected.
We were recommended to get Hep A and Typhoid – just as a precaution.
I’ve been living in the Tulum area for 8 years and have not run across a case of typhoid written up in the local papers. Not a sure bet that it doesn’t exist here, but just saying, for what it’s worth. As for Hep A…I heard about it first on this forum. However, lately there was an article in the local paper. So if I were you, I’d be sure to get that one. However, if I were me…which I am…I wouldn’t bother cuz I don’t like shots. So my advice is get vaccinated against hep A even though I’m not. Make sense? lol
