How To Check If A Process Is A Virus Or Not
You might be wondering if your computer has a virus because youve seen a strange process in the Windows Task Manager, which you can open by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc or by right-clicking the Windows taskbar and selecting Task Manager.
Its normal to see quite a few processes here click More Details if you see a smaller list. Many of these processes have strange, confusing names. Thats normal. Windows includes quite a few background processes, your PC manufacturer added some, and applications you install often add them.
Badly behaved malware will often use a large amount of CPU, memory, or disk resources and may stand out here. If youre curious about whether a specific program is malicious, right-click it in the Task Manager and select Search Online to find more information.
If information about malware appears when you search the process, thats a sign you likely have malware. However, dont assume that your computer is virus-free just because a process looks legitimate. A process could lie and say its Google Chrome or chrome.exe, but it may just be malware impersonating Google Chrome thats located in a different folder on your system. If youre concerned you might have malware, we recommend performing an anti-malware scan.
The Search Online option isnt available on Windows 7. If you use Windows 7, youll have to plug the name of the process into Google or another search engine instead.
Important Note About Other Free Pc & Registry Cleaner Lists
There are certainly other lists of free PC and computer cleaner programs out there but many of them include cleaner tools that, at some point during their download or use, charge you something.
The scanning may be free, but when you get to the cleaning part, you’re prompted for a credit card number. Worse yet, sometimes only the “download” is free, but actually using the program is not. It’s all semanticsâand it’s not very ethical.
We are not affiliated with any of the companies in our curated list, nor do we receive any compensation from any of them for promoting their programs. We have tested each of them personally and, at least as of the date in the piece, each one was completely free to download, scan, and clean your system and registry.
Registry cleaning should only be used to troubleshoot actual issues and should not be part of regular PC maintenance . System cleaning , while useful to free up hard drive space and solve some browser error messages, is also not something you actually need to do on a regular basis to keep your computer working.

Other valid concerns may include:
- a new homepage or a toolbar in your browser
- a sharp decrease in disk space
- an increase in internet traffic

Determine If Security Software Is On Your Dell Computer And Get Support
Determine if you have security software that is already installed on your computer. If so, see your vendor for information about removal of malware.
To determine if you have security software, check the System Tray in the bottom-right corner of your screen for a security icon. McAfee icons typically are red with a large letter “M” in the center of the icon.
Perform A Full System Scan
If you have an antivirus utility installed and updated, the first thing you can do is launch it then perform a full system scan. For the purposes of this article, Im going to use Windows Defender Security Center. Third-party antivirus utilities such as Norton, McAfee, BitDefender, Avira, should have a similar option. For older versions of Windows 10, check out our tutorial on how to use Windows Defender.
In Windows Defender Security Center, click the Virus & threat protection menu. If threats are detected, you can immediately start a scan.
We want to perform a full system scan, so, go ahead and click the Virus & threat menu, click Advanced scan.
Select the Full Scan radio button then click Scan now.
The process can take some time depending on the size of your data and the severity of the infection. A single scan might not be able to successfully remove the virus, so I would perform a couple more scans.
After threats are found, you can click the Start action to quarantine the virus immediately or review it to see further details.

Can Your Computer Become Infected With A Virus Via Email
Your computer can become infected with a virus via email, but only if you open attachments within a spam email or click on the links contained in them.
Simply receiving a spam email will not infect your computer. Just mark these as spam or junk and ensure they are deleted. Most email providers will automate this but if any slip through the net, just mark them as spam yourself and dont open them.

Easy Steps To Clean Your Infected Computer
Posted: by Wendy Zamora
You log onto your computer and it takes forever to boot. When it finally does, a few unfamiliar applications litter your desktop, and your browser immediately sends you to an ad for hair loss products.
Sounds like your PC has a problem with malware.
So what should you do? Before you flip out, try these simple steps to clean up your infected computer.
1. Computer acting suspect? Do a little digging and check for symptoms.
Look for issues characteristic of a malware infection:
- Does your web browser freeze or become unresponsive?
- Do you get redirected to web pages other than the ones you are trying to visit?
- Are you bombarded with pop-up messages?
- Does your computer run slower than usual?
- Do you see new icons on your desktop that you dont recognize?
- Are your fans spinning suspiciously louder or harder than usual?
Unfortunately, even if you see nothing wrong with your computer, there may be trouble brewing under the surface, sneaking around and screwing with your files undetected. So it’s a safe bet to move on to Step 2 even if you can’t find a symptom.
2. Use protection: Enter safe mode.
3. Back up your files.
- This includes documents, photos, and videos. Especially cat videos.
- Do not back up program files, as those are where infections like to hide. You can always download these programs again if files are lost.
4. Download an on-demand malware scanner such as Malwarebytes.
5. Run the scan.
6. Restart your computer.
9. Reset all of your passwords.

What To Do When Your Computer Gets A Virus
For me personally, the last time I had a computer infected that caused irreparable damage was in the summer of 2001. My computer was running Windows ME . I received a Word document as an attachment in Outlook Express, but it turned out to be a booby-trapped W32 virus. Not even Norton, which I had installed and updated could remove it. All I saw was a red screen with no options. Ultimately, I ended up performing a factory recovery using the Windows 98 SE disc that came with the system. In 2017, drastic steps like that might not be necessary.
How To Know If Your Laptop Has Virus

But do not worry, follow these steps to easily remove laptop virus.

But I’m Looking For Pc Cleaners Not Registry Cleaners
Back in the “old days” there were many programs that billed themselves as registry cleaners and that’s pretty much all they did. However, as registry “cleaning” became less needed , these programs morphed into system cleaners with the ability to do a lot more than remove unnecessary entries from the Windows Registry
So what has happened over time is that our list of registry cleaners has become primarily a list of system cleaners, adding many more features than they had ten years prior.
If you want to skip right on to our favorite, check out the 100 percent freeware CCleaner program that lets you do lots of system cleaning with just a couple clicks of your mouse.
CCleaner, in particular, is a full suite that includes lots of features in addition to registry cleaning. It lets you clear your private web browser data like the history and saved passwords, delete temporary program and operating system data, disable programs that start up with Windows, find duplicate files, wipe an entire hard drive, manage browser plugins, see what’s filling up all the space on your hard drive, and more.
If you’re not a fan of CCleaner, some similar programs we recommend are IObit’s Advanced SystemCare Free and Wise Disk Cleaner. While they both have lots of tools that make cleaning up your computer a breeze, IObit’s program is a bit more bloatedâit feels heavy and cluttered, and shows annoying pop-ups to try their other software. However, it’s still free to use.
