Faced with rising infections and an anticipated surge in holiday travel, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday endorsed booster shots of the coronavirus vaccines for all Americans over 18.

The recommendation fulfills President Bidens pledge in August to make the extra doses available to all adults, and caps months of scientific debate over whether most people really needed boosters. The shots are already available at many drugstores, doctors offices and vaccination centers.

The C.D.C. said that Americans over age 50, as well as those 18 and older living in long-term care facilities, should get booster shots of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines. All other adults over age 18 may get booster doses, the agency decided.

Recipients of Johnson & Johnsons one-dose vaccine already were cleared to get a booster at least two months after the initial shot.

Earlier on Friday, the Food and Drug Administration authorized booster shots for all Americans over age 18. But the C.D.C. usually sets the clinical guidelines adopted by the medical profession.

The Current Pace Of Vaccination Has Slowed Significantly Since This Spring No Vaccine Has Been Authorized For Children Under 12

Based on the seven-day average of people receiving a first or single dose each day.

But the pace of vaccinations varies across the country. Many states in the South and West, for example, have vaccinated a smaller share of their population with a first or single dose than in other regions.

States Progress Unevenly In Vaccine Rollout

In the race to vaccinate their residents, some states with smaller populations in the Northeast have been leading the way, and some states in the Southeast and Midwest are lagging.

States receive vaccine allocations based on their total adult populations. Each state has its own plan for how to get those vaccines out to its residents through county health offices, hospital systems, pharmacies, mass vaccination sites and mobile clinics. Some states are encountering hesitancy and resistance to getting vaccinated among their populations.

The federal strategy for giving out shots has pivoted from mass vaccination sites, which served millions of people per day at stadiums and conference centers in the spring, to targeted efforts at local pharmacies, doctors’ offices, work sites and large gatherings such as summer festivals and sports games.

The Biden-Harris administration says equity is central to the country’s vaccination efforts. As of May 12, anyone in the U.S. 12 and older is eligible to get a vaccine.

Vaccination Progress Across The World

Public health officials have worried since the start of the pandemic that vaccinations would not be equitably distributed around the world. The data appears to be confirming those fears as developed nations are vaccinating their populations far faster than less developed countries. Hover over each location to view country-by-country data.

Vaccination rollouts among countries present an even starker contrast than those among U.S. states. Israel has far outpaced the rest of the worldâs nations, including the United States, by vaccinating a far larger percentage of its population much faster.

What Share Of The Population Has Been Partly Or Fully Vaccinated Against Covid

The following charts show the breakdown of vaccinations by those that have been partly or fully vaccinated. A person is considered partly vaccinated if they have received only one dose of a 2-dose vaccine protocol. A person is considered fully vaccinated if they have received a single-dose vaccine or both doses of a two-dose vaccine.

This data is only available for countries which report the breakdown of doses administered by first and second doses.

Are The Most Vulnerable Counties Being Vaccinated

Speed isnt the only priority for the countrys vaccination campaign. The Biden administration has also committed to distributing shots equitably to the communities most affected by the pandemic.

Yet many months into the rollout, the most socially vulnerable counties in the U.S. have a lower vaccination rate on average than the nations least vulnerable. The majority of the most disadvantaged counties with the fewest fully vaccinated people are in the South, while the most vaccinated, least vulnerable counties are in the Midwest and Northeast.

Percent Of Eligible Americans Are Fully Vaccinated Against Covid

More than 80 percent of American adults have now received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and seven in 10 are fully vaccinated, White House officials said.

White House coronavirus task force chief Dr. Jeff Zients said on Monday that the statistical benchmarks show the U.S. is making significant progress fighting the pandemic, especially as the country awaits final approval of the shots for children aged 5 to 11.

These are important milestones, Zients said. We know vaccines are the very best tool we have to accelerating our path out of the pandemic.

Zients said the numbers reflect the success of vaccine mandates in pushing Americans to get their lifesaving shots as COVID-19 caseloads, hospitalizations and deaths continue to ebb.

The next major vaccination effort is expected to focus on younger children, who may get the green light for vaccines as soon as Wednesday or Thursday.

The Food and Drug Administration has already approved kid-sized doses of the Pfizer vaccine for children 5 to 11 and the Centers for Disease Control is expected to give final approval this week.

Federal officials have been preparing to ship millions of vaccine doses to a network of 20,000 pediatricians, drug stores and community health centers within hours of getting the go-ahead.

Vaccine Development: Vaccines Approved For Use And In Clinical Trials

The speed at which the first COVID-19 vaccines were developed was extraordinary. We have previously looked into the history of vaccine development. The measles vaccine was found relatively rapidly: it took only 10 years from the discovery of the pathogen to the development of the first vaccine. But for typhoid it took more than a century, and for some diseases for which weve known the pathogens for more than a century we still havent found an effective vaccine.

The development of a vaccine against COVID-19 has been much faster than the development of any other vaccine. Within less than a year several successful vaccines have already been announced and were approved for use in some countries.

The hope is that even more manufacturers develop vaccines for COVID-19. This will be important because eventually a very large share of the world population needs to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

How Many People In Washington County Have Received A Covid

• 57% of people in Washington County have received at least one dose of the vaccine, for a total of 92,232 people
• 51% of people in Washington County are fully vaccinated, for a total of 81,259 people

Daily Reported Doses Given By Manufacturer

In December, federal regulators gave emergency use authorization to two-dose vaccines developed by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna. Regulators authorized Johnson & Johnsons one-dose vaccine in February, but recommended a pause in its use on April 13 because of reports of blood clots in a small number of patients. All 50 states paused or recommended that providers pause those vaccinations. The government ended the Johnson & Johnson pause on April 23, clearing the way for states to resume vaccinations.

Johnson & Johnson doses that were already administered or distributed continued to appear in the federal vaccination data during the halt in use.

On Aug. 12, regulators gave emergency use authorization for people with weakened immune systems to get a third dose of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. On Aug. 23, the federal government approved the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for those 16 and older, the first full approval of a Covid-19 vaccine in the country. Emergency use authorization of the vaccine continues for those ages 12 to 15 and third doses for those with weakened immune systems.

How Each State Compares To The National Share Of Vaccinated People

There are many reasons eligible people are not vaccinated. Surveys have indicated that some people are adamant in their refusal of the coronavirus vaccines, while others are open to getting a shot but have been putting it off or want to wait and see before making a decision.

The first group, surveys have shown, tends to be disproportionately white, rural, evangelical Christian and politically conservative. The second group tends to be a more diverse and urban group, including many younger people, Black and Latino Americans, and Democrats.

In April, The New York Times analyzed vaccine records and voter records in every county in the United States and found that both willingness to receive a coronavirus vaccine and actual vaccination rates were lower, on average, in counties where a majority of residents voted to re-elect former President Donald J. Trump in 2020.

To estimate the 12+, 18+ and 65+ populations for US territories, CDC assumes that the proportions of people aged 12 years and older, 18 years and older and people aged 65 years and older in the territories are the same as in the aggregate of the 50 states, DC, and Puerto Rico .

Million Americans Fully Vaccinated Here’s What Percent That Is

The U.S. reached a milestone Thursday as 55% of the population has been fully vaccinated for COVID-19, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced.

The news comes the same day that CDC advisers recommended booster doses of Pfizer’s vaccine for millions of older or otherwise vulnerable Americans despite doubts the extra shots will do much to slow the pandemic.

The CDC website said 182.5 million Americans have been fully vaccinated. That means two doses of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson shot.

More than 212 million people 64% of the population have received at least one vaccine dose.

Kids age 12 are the youngest currently authorized to get the Pfizer vaccine. If you just look at Americans 12 and older, the rate of full vaccination is 64.3%.

The adult vaccination rate is 66.2% and for those 65 and older, the rate is 83%.

Pfizer said Monday its COVID-19 vaccine works for children ages 5 to 11 and that it will seek U.S. authorization for this age group soon a key step toward beginning vaccinations for youngsters.

Who Is Getting Breakthrough Covid Cases

According to the CDC, most of the severe breakthrough cases about 74% had been among seniors who were 65 years or older, CNN reports.

• About 20% of the people who died from COVID-19 after a breakthrough case died from something other than COVID-19, though they had a breakthrough case when they died, according to CNN.

What Share Of The Population Has Been Fully Vaccinated Against Covid

The following chart shows the share of the total population that has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. This represents the share that have received all doses prescribed by the vaccination protocol. If a person receives the first dose of a 2-dose vaccine, this metric stays the same. If they receive the second dose, the metric goes up by 1.

This data is only available for countries which report the breakdown of doses administered by first and second doses.

Cdc Endorses Booster Vaccine Recommendation But With One Change

The CDC endorsed booster shots for millions of older or otherwise vulnerable Americans, opening a major new phase in the U.S vaccination drive against COVID-19. CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky signed off on a series of recommendations from a panel of advisers late Thursday.

The advisers said boosters should be offered to people 65 and older, nursing home residents and those ages 50 to 64 who have risky underlying health problems. The extra dose would be given once they are at least six months past their last Pfizer shot.

However, Walensky decided to make one recommendation that the panel had rejected.

The panel on Thursday voted against saying that people can get a booster if they are ages 18 to 64 years and are health-care workers or have another job that puts them at increased risk of being exposed to the virus.

But Walensky disagreed and put that recommendation back in, noting that such a move aligns with a FDA booster authorization decision earlier this week.

The panel had offered the option of a booster for those ages 18 to 49 who have chronic health problems and want one. But the advisers refused to go further and open boosters to otherwise healthy front-line health care workers who aren’t at risk of severe illness but want to avoid even a mild infection.

States Ranked By Percentage Of Population Fully Vaccinated: Sept 17

Vermont has the highest percentage of its population fully vaccinated against COVID-19, according to the CDC’s COVID-19 vaccine distribution and administration data tracker.

The CDC’s data tracker compiles data from healthcare facilities and public health authorities. It updates daily to report the total number of people in each state who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. The numbers reported by the CDC may vary from the numbers published on individual states’ public health websites, as there may be reporting lags between the states and the CDC.

As of 6 a.m. EDT Sept. 16, a total of 180,086,143 Americans had been fully vaccinated, or 54.2 percent of the country’s population, according to the CDC’s data.
