How Many People Have Been Vaccinated In America

Who Can Get A Vaccine Or A Booster

Here’s how many Americans have been vaccinated for Covid-19 so far

The vaccine rollout was launched in winter 2020 and began with those considered most vulnerable before later moving down the adult age groups. All those aged 12 and over are now being offered two doses.

As Breakthrough Cases Increase Is A Booster Shot Needed

In Virginia, total breakthrough cases resulting in death from Covid-19 went from 17 in mid-July to 42 on Friday.

In Oklahoma, where cases are up by 67 percent, state officials broke down the data to show that for residents who got Johnson & Johnson vaccine the incidents of breakthrough were greater at 160 per 100,000 people compared to 93 per 100,000 for Moderna.

Its A Lot More Than That

Other metrics also indicate those numbers were dramatically undercounted.

For instance, take a look at the increase in job openings following the announcement of the vaccine mandate. Notice how the positions for CNAs within Gundersen Health Systems jumped from 53 in mid-September to 60 just a few weeks later. Its also possible these postings are for multiple vacancies, meaning if theres a need for six day-shift nurses in the cardio-pulmonary unit, for example, the job might only be listed once.

Since then, Gundersens vacancies have only continued to skyrocket. Postings for CNAs have now jumped to 85, and posted vacancies for nurses spiked from 89 after the mandate was announced to 141 as of Wednesday, a more than 58 percent increase that occurred mostly after the reports of only 30 terminations and 62 resignations

This staff hemorrhaging was on top of other worker shortages resulting from alleged poor wages and working conditions. Nursing staff watched as environmental assistants, who are responsible for custodial duties, left their posts in droves after their wages were lowered in 2021.

This shortage of low-wage staff had direct impacts on patient care. Patients would go without clean linens and towels, David Anderson, who was a nurse in Gundersens Behavioral Health Unit for nearly a decade before being fired in November as a result of the vaccine mandate, told The Federalist.

Who Is Eligible For A Vaccine

The United States has reached a new milestone in its vaccine rollout: children ages 5 to 11 are now eligible for a vaccine, after the F.D.A. authorized use of the Pfizer vaccine for this age group.

In May the F.D.A. had expanded its emergency use authorization of that vaccine for children 12 and older, allowing young adolescents to start getting vaccinated before school started in the fall of 2021.

And in April every state had made those 18 and older eligible for the shots, according to a Times survey. This universal eligibility followed months where states relied on complicated phase-based plans that prioritized certain vulnerable individuals like older Americans, critical workers and those with certain medical conditions. Often, county plans differed from state plans.

The Gap Between Countries

An interactive CDC map shows how the COVID

High-income countries represent only 16% of the worlds population, yet some of them have bought enough vaccines to cover their population more than twice.

According to a ONE’s Policy team study, as of March the worlds richest countries had collectively bought 1 billion more doses than their citizens need. The rest of the world had only been able to secure 2.5 billion doses not enough to vaccinate their populations.

How Much Worse Is It Going To Get

The shortages extended to nurses as well, long before the vaccine mandate made them much worse.

Within the hospital, nursing shortages have led to unsafe staffing situations where nurses and CNAs are being forced to take more patients than what is safe due to there not being enough nursing staff present. Patients are being forgotten on bed pans or are falling because there is simply not enough staff to safely take care of them, wrote the RN who resigned after acquiring a religious exemption.

She said that one weekend in October, Gundersen had to shut down a dozen beds in the hospital due to nursing shortages. She added that the hospital has also canceled heart valve replacement surgeries because it didnt have enough staff to take care of post-op patients.

Now just imagine, if this is the current staffing reality at Gundersen, how much worse is itgoing to get when Gundersen fires hundreds more in November due to the vaccine mandate? she said.

The Pace Of Vaccinations Has Been Steadily Climbing Since The Summer

Based on the seven-day average of people becoming fully vaccinated each day.

But the pace of vaccinations varies across the country. Many states in the South and West, for example, have fully vaccinated a smaller share of their population than in other regions.

On Dec. 9, the C.D.C capped its vaccination rate figures at 95 percent, after acknowledging that it may be overestimating first doses of the vaccine and underestimating booster shots. As a result, even locations that have exceeded that vaccination rate will remain at 95 percent.

The C.D.C. said on its website that the cap helps address potential overestimates of vaccination coverage due to first, second, and booster doses that were not linked. Other possible reasons for overestimation, according to the agency, include census population data that excludes part-time residents or reporting errors.

Vaccination Coverage By Country Income Level

Although only about half of the U.S. population has been vaccinated, vaccine supply now exceeds demand in the country. In recent weeks, the U.S. pledged to donate 580 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine to other nations.

The donated vaccines will be distributed primarily through COVAX, a UN-backed, donor-funded program to support the development and delivery of COVID-19 vaccines to low- and middle-income countries.

Populations used for U.S. state, District of Columbia and Puerto Rico calculations are from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2019 state population estimates. Populations used for other territory and associated island state calculations are from the World Bank.

The share of distributed doses used in each state or territory is calculated by dividing the number of doses administered in that state or territory by the number of doses distributed to that state or territory. The percent of people vaccinated in each state, territory or county is calculated by dividing the number of residents of that state, territory or county who have been vaccinated by the population of that state, territory or county.

Because of reporting delays and other factors, the CDC data above may differ from that of states’ and territories’ own reports and dashboards. For more information, see the footnotes on the CDC’s website. To see the CDC’s log of changes and corrections to the data, check the historical updates.

Million Americans Fully Vaccinated Here’s What Percent That Is

The U.S. reached a milestone Thursday as 55% of the population has been fully vaccinated for COVID-19, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced.

The news comes the same day that CDC advisers recommended booster doses of Pfizer’s vaccine for millions of older or otherwise vulnerable Americans despite doubts the extra shots will do much to slow the pandemic.

The CDC website said 182.5 million Americans have been fully vaccinated. That means two doses of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson shot.

More than 212 million people 64% of the population have received at least one vaccine dose.

Kids age 12 are the youngest currently authorized to get the Pfizer vaccine. If you just look at Americans 12 and older, the rate of full vaccination is 64.3%.

The adult vaccination rate is 66.2% and for those 65 and older, the rate is 83%.

Pfizer said Monday its COVID-19 vaccine works for children ages 5 to 11 and that it will seek U.S. authorization for this age group soon a key step toward beginning vaccinations for youngsters.

What a 95% Vaccine Efficacy Rate Actually Means

UK prime minister, Boris Johnson, has announced his plans to lift all covid-19 regulations in England on 24 February

All covid-19 restrictions in England, including the requirement to self-isolate after testing positive, could end on 24 February, announced Boris Johnson. Regulations were originally due to expire on 24 March, but in parliament on Wednesday, the prime minister Johnson said the date had been brought forward to show that the hard work of the British people is paying off.

It is my intention to return on the first day after the half-term recess to present our strategy for living with covid, he said to parliament.

If it goes ahead, England will be following in the footsteps of Sweden, who on Wednesday lifted nearly all restrictions. Swedens minister of health, Lena Hallengren said in a statement: As we know this pandemic, I would say its over.

This came after Denmark became the first European Union country to scrap all of its coronavirus restrictions. As of right now, the country has one of the highest numbers of covid-19 cases per capita in the world, with 43,503 daily cases.

Some scientists are concerned overturning these rules may be too soon however. We should have a little more patience, wait at least a couple of more weeks. And we are wealthy enough to keep testing, Fredrik Elgh, professor of virology at Umea University in Sweden told Reuters.

Which Type Of Covid

Different countries have ordered varying quantities of vaccines from a range of medical companies. These include the Pfizer / BioNtech jabs, Astrazeneca / Oxford University , the Russian Sputnik V vaccine from the Gamaleya Research Institute, and vaccines from the Chinese companies Sinovac and Sinopharm.

How Much Do Vaccines Cost Per Dose

Most of the vaccines currently in use require two doses for a full vaccination.

The AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine is the cheapest at only $4 per dose. The company has committed not to profit from the vaccine while the pandemic lasts. The vaccine also can be stored in normal refrigerators for up to six months, which makes it easier to transport and distribute in developing countries.

On the other hand, the mRNA vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna require a complicated cold chain to safely distribute them. These are also the most expensive vaccines. So far, the companies have been selling the majority of their doses to high-income countries, including the U.S., Canada and the European Union.

Because trials were conducted differently at different times, effectiveness figures cannot be directly compared.

Vaccines produced by Moderna and the Pfizer-BioNTech partnership appear to be 90% effective in preventing COVID-19 in a real-world setting.

AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine was 76% effective at preventing symptomatic COVID-19 two weeks after the second dose and was 100% effective in stopping severe disease and hospitalization in a U.S.-based clinical trial, according to the company.

The J& J vaccine was shown to be 72% effective in moderate to severe disease and 85% effective in preventing the most severe disease.

A booster campaign, originally targeted at people over 40 or belonging to a number of other vulnerable groups, has been extended to all over-18s.

The government says every eligible adult will be offered a booster jab by the end of the year.

The minimum gap between the second jab and booster dose has also been reduced from six to three months, to speed up the process.

So far, the UK has approved four vaccines for use: Pfizer-BioNTech, Oxford-AstraZeneca, Moderna and Janssen three of which require two doses for maximum protection.

All those aged under 40 are being offered an alternative to the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine due to evidence linking it to rare blood clots.

The vaccine currently being used for under-18s in the UK is Pfizer-BioNTech, but the Moderna vaccine has also been authorised for use in children.

Those eligible for boosters will receive one dose of Pfizer or half a dose of Moderna.

There is no vaccine currently approved for use in the under-12s.

Map: See How Many Adults In The Us Have Not Been Vaccinated By State

Nearly 70 million unvaccinated adults in the U.S. could find a new reason to get vaccinated after the Food and Drug Administration announced Monday it had granted full approval to Pfizer-BioNTechs Covid-19 vaccine for people ages 16 and up.

A survey from the Kaiser Family Foundation in June found that 3 in 10 unvaccinated adults would be more likely to get the shot if one of the vaccines received FDA approval.

Including U.S. territories, about 73 percent of people in the U.S. have received at least one dose of the Covid vaccine, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In Texas, where Covid cases are averaging more than 17,000 a day, nearly 70 percent of the states adult population has received their first shot, which means more than 6.6 million adults in the state have yet to get one shot of the Covid vaccines.

Has The Rollout Been Even Across All Areas

Across the country, there continues to be some variation in the vaccine programme.

Scotland has vaccinated 92% of those aged 12 and over with at least one dose, while Wales and England have reached 90% and Northern Ireland 87%.

Second doses are also being rolled out, with all nations reaching more than 80% of over-12s so far.

Across the English regions, the South West has vaccinated 86% of the same age group with at least one dose, while London has reached 68%.

When looking at boosters, the South West has reached 57% of people aged 12 and over, while for London the figure is 36%.

Another way of measuring booster uptake is to look at the people who were double jabbed before October, as you must wait at least three months to get a booster after your second jab.

Among the nations, Scotland leads the way, with about 73% of those who were double jabbed by early October receiving a booster as of 22 December. England wasn’t far behind, with 71% coverage.

Data for Wales was slightly behind other nations, but as of 19 December it had 59% uptake.

The figures may differ from those for booster uptake in the population, which include some people not yet eligible for a booster jab.

There have also been disparities between ethnic groups and poorer and wealthier areas.

Analysis of NHS records by the OpenSAFELY group – a collaboration between Oxford University and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine – shows that black people were the least likely to have received a vaccine.

What Share Of The Population Has Been Fully Vaccinated Against Covid

The following chart shows the share of the total population that has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. This represents the share that have received all doses prescribed by the vaccination protocol. If a person receives the first dose of a 2-dose vaccine, this metric stays the same. If they receive the second dose, the metric goes up by 1.

This data is only available for countries which report the breakdown of doses administered by first and second doses.

What Share Of The Population Has Been Partly Or Fully Vaccinated Against Covid

How vaccines have revolutionized healthcare: A brief history

The following charts show the breakdown of vaccinations by those that have been partly or fully vaccinated. A person is considered partly vaccinated if they have received only one dose of a 2-dose vaccine protocol. A person is considered fully vaccinated if they have received a single-dose vaccine or both doses of a two-dose vaccine.

This data is only available for countries which report the breakdown of doses administered by first and second doses.
