State Ditching Phase Finder As Vaccine Requirement

The Washington State Department of Health will no longer require proof of vaccine eligibility with Phase Finder, according to a newsletter the department sent out Friday.

Starting on March 31, those getting their vaccine won’t have to prove they’re eligible under the current phase to qualify. The DOH said they trust most people will continue to do the right thing and wait their turn.

Vaccine Clinic In Seattle’s Central District Helps Asian Immigrants Get Their Shots

Dozens of volunteers filled the back of a church in Seattles Central District Sunday for a pop-up vaccine clinic geared at reaching local members of the Vietnamese community.

Most of those who came out to the clinic were there for second shots but organizers say it was tougher to get people to return after some safety concerns were raised. Recent attacks on Asian-Americans made some fearful to come and organizers added security to try and calm those concerns.

How To Get A Covid

The Washington State Department of Health released an online portal to check your eligibility for the COVID-19 vaccine. Use the Phase Finder tool to input personal information like age, health conditions and essential worker status to determine if it’s your turn.

As of March 17, Washington is in Phase 1B, tier 2 of vaccination. Eligible people include:

• High-risk health care workers and first responders
• Long-term care residents
• People 65 years old and older
• People 50 years old and older in multigenerational households
• Teachers, school staff and childcare workers
• Employees in certain congregate settings, such as grocery stores, agriculture, corrections, transit and law enforcement
• People age 16 years and older who are pregnant
• People age 16 and older who have a disability that puts them at high risk

The CDC reports demographic characteristics, including race/ethnicity, of people receiving COVID-19 vaccinations at the national level, including both people who have received one dose and people who have been recently vaccinated . As of December 13, 2021, CDC reported that race/ethnicity was known for 70% of people who had received at least one dose of the vaccine. Among this group, nearly two thirds were White , 10% were Black, 19% were Hispanic, 6% were Asian, 1% were American Indian or Alaska Native , and < 1% were Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander , while 6% reported multiple or other race. White people make up a smaller share of people who have received at least one dose and people who have recently received a vaccination compared to their share of the total population . The same pattern is observed among Black people, who make up 10% of people who have received at least one dose and 11% of those recently vaccinated, compared to 12% of the population. In contrast, Hispanic people make up a larger share of vaccinated people and people who recently received a vaccination compared to their share of the total population . Vaccinations Required For Students And Personnel

In order to protect the health and safety of our community, the University of Washington is requiring all students and personnel to be vaccinated against COVID-19, with certain exemptions allowed.

• Students and UW personnel are required to be fully vaccinated or receive an exemption. UW Medicine clinical personnel should continue to follow UW Medicine policies and procedures. Vaccination is a condition of employment as of Oct. 18, 2021.
• All students and personnel should get vaccinated as soon as possible, wherever they are currently living. Vaccines authorized by the United States, by the World Health Organization or by other nations will meet this requirement.
• Vaccinations are available on and near campus if students and personnel cant get vaccinated where they currently live.
• At this time, the state of Washington has not added a booster shot requirement to its vaccination mandate.

After a slow kickoff in December, vaccine administration improved in scale and efficiency. The country surpassed President Biden’s initial goals of getting 100 million vaccines into arms in his first 100 days, reaching 200 million vaccines by day 92.

Administration rates peaked in early April with the United States giving out more than 3 million COVID-19 shots per day but declined dramatically after, once people who were most eager to get vaccinated received their shots.

Vaccine eligibility opened to everyone 16 and up in the U.S. in mid-April, to those 12 and older in mid-May, and to kids as young as 5 in early November.

Vaccine uptake hit a low in early July the country fell several million people short of President Biden’s goal of getting at least one shot to 70% of adults in the U.S. by Independence Day.

Later in the summer, vaccination rates rose, as delta surged around the country, hitting hard in areas with low vaccine coverage. Vaccine mandates in schoolsand workplaces contributed to a further increase in daily doses administered in the fall.

A Reality Check On Breakthrough Covid Cases In Washington

Emily Griffin was ready to get back to work as a DJ in Seattle as vaccination rates increased and Washington state fully reopened.

But then she started hearing about people she knew, fully vaccinated people, coming down with Covid. Breakthrough cases made her think twice.

“Once opening weekend happened and I saw how busy it got,” Emily told KUOW’s Seattle Now. “Knowing and loving club culture and knowing that it is all about getting in there together and getting sweaty together, I just decided that I wasn’t ready and I cancelled my gigs.”

Emily is not alone. Many may feel extra cautious upon hearing of breakthrough cases, especially as more contagious variants of the coronavirus continue to spread. The good news is that all three Covid vaccines in the United States are effective against the variants, so far.

“We are on the way out of this,” Dr. Angie Rasmussen told Seattle Now. “It’s just that we are not quite there yet. There are going to be enough people who think that we are, that those of use who are concerned have good reason to be, and we can take precautions to keep ourselves and communities as safe as possible.”

Dr. Rasmussen is a virologist with the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization at the University of Saskatchewan. Even an expert like her is still being cautious in crowded indoor areas by keeping her mask on. She recommends maintaining some caution over the summer in more risky settings.
