How Many People Have Been Vaccinated

Vaccine Development: Vaccines Approved For Use And In Clinical Trials

Here’s how many Americans have been vaccinated for Covid-19 so far

The speed at which the first COVID-19 vaccines were developed was extraordinary. We have previously looked into the history of vaccine development. The measles vaccine was found relatively rapidly: it took only 10 years from the discovery of the pathogen to the development of the first vaccine. But for typhoid it took more than a century, and for some diseases for which weve known the pathogens for more than a century we still havent found an effective vaccine.

The development of a vaccine against COVID-19 has been much faster than the development of any other vaccine. Within less than a year several successful vaccines have already been announced and were approved for use in some countries.

The hope is that even more manufacturers develop vaccines for COVID-19. This will be important because eventually a very large share of the world population needs to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

We are on the way to several vaccines against COVID-19 vaccine trackers monitor the progress:

Several institutions maintain websites on which they list COVID-19 candidate vaccines that are currently being developed:

Michigan Wont Implement The Cdcs New Isolation Guidelines Without Additional Information

Michigan health officials announced Thursday that the state will ignore new isolation guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention pending additional information.

On Monday, the C.D.C. cut in half the recommended isolation period of 10 days for those with little or no symptoms. Those now leaving isolation should quarantine for five days and wear masks for an additional five days, federal health officials said.

In its statement, Michigans health department said it wanted to review the evidence behind the new isolation guidelines, including its application for high-risk groups, before it adopted the protocol.

Until then, the state will retain current quarantine and isolation guidelines, and have its residents follow the previous 10-day isolation period.

Health officials also expressed concern over a recent spike in cases across the state, thought to be the result of the new, and highly transmissible, Omicron variant. More than 9,000 people are testing positive every day in Michigan, a 40 percent jump over the last two weeks.

The new guidelines have divided health and government officials, who disagreed on whether or not they were necessary.

The C.D.C. made a decision to balance whats good for public health at the same time as keeping the society running, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nations top infectious disease expert, said on News Nations Morning in America on Thursday.

Daily Reported Doses Given By Manufacturer

Each line shows the seven-day average.

In December 2020, federal regulators gave emergency use authorization to two-dose vaccines developed by Pfizer and Moderna. Regulators authorized Johnson & Johnsons one-dose vaccine in February, but recommended a pause in its use on April 13 because of reports of blood clots in a small number of patients. All 50 states paused or recommended that providers pause those vaccinations. The government ended the Johnson & Johnson pause on April 23, clearing the way for states to resume vaccinations.

On Aug. 12, regulators gave emergency use authorization for people with weakened immune systems to get a third dose of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, and expanded that authorization in September and October to include booster shots for many Americans.

On Aug. 23, the federal government approved the Pfizer vaccine for those 16 and older, the first full approval of a Covid-19 vaccine in the country.

The F.D.A. cleared the Pfizer vaccine for children, ages 5 to 11, on Oct. 29. Emergency use authorization of the vaccine continues for those ages 5 to 15 and for those receiving additional doses.

The Fda Will Allow Pfizer Boosters For 12

The Food and Drug Administration is planning to broaden eligibility for coronavirus vaccine booster doses on Monday, allowing 12- to 15-year-olds to receive third doses of Pfizer-BioNTechs vaccine, according to people familiar with the agencys deliberations.

Regulators also plan to allow both adolescents and adults to seek an extra shot of Pfizers vaccine five months after receiving a second dose instead of the current period of six months.A booster shot is also expected to be authorized for younger children, ages 5 to 11, with immune deficiencies.

The Centers for Disease Control and Preventions vaccine advisory committee is planning to meet by the middle of next week to vote on whether to recommend the changes. If the committee agrees with the F.D.A.s authorizations, Dr. Rochelle P. Walensky, the C.D.C. director, is expected to promptly endorse the revisions.

The move to expand boosters comes as the highly contagious Omicron variant is infecting a record number of Americans with the coronavirus, putting more pressure on hospitals already deluged by Covid-19 patients from the Delta variant.

More than 70 percent of people in the United States 12 years and older are fully vaccinated, according to the C.D.C. At least 1.8 million adolescents between 12 and 15 years old have tested positive for the virus, according to the C.D.C. Children can better withstand coronavirus infections, but in rare instances still can get very sick and even die.

    Which Type Of Covid

Different countries have ordered varying quantities of vaccines from a range of medical companies. These include the Pfizer / BioNtech jabs, Astrazeneca / Oxford University , the Russian Sputnik V vaccine from the Gamaleya Research Institute, and vaccines from the Chinese companies Sinovac and Sinopharm.

Are The Most Vulnerable Counties Being Vaccinated

Speed isnt the only priority for the countrys vaccination campaign. The Biden administration has also committed to distributing shots equitably to the communities most affected by the pandemic.

Yet many months into the rollout, the most socially vulnerable counties in the U.S. have a lower vaccination rate on average than the nations least vulnerable. The majority of the most disadvantaged counties with the fewest fully vaccinated people are in the South, while the most vaccinated, least vulnerable counties are in the Midwest and Northeast.

Which Countries Are Better At Testing

The test positivity rate measures the percentage of tests that return as positive. It can tell us two things: the overall size of the outbreak in each country, and how comprehensively different testing systems are coping with the number of new cases. The higher the number, the larger the outbreak the lower this number, the more confident we can be that the testing system is catching most of the cases.

A good analogy is fishing: if you are constantly filling your net when you bring it up, you know it is likely there are far more fish out there that you are missing. But if you cast your net wide and only catch a couple of fish, you know there probably arent many others out there.

Africas Covid Crisis Deepens But Vaccines Are Still Far Off

A closer look at how many people have been vaccinated in Florida

    Daily doses per 100,000 people

Africa is now in the deadliest stage of its pandemic, and there is little prospect of relief in sight.

The Delta variant is sweeping across the continent. Namibia and Tunisia are reporting more deaths per capita than any other country. Hospitals across the continent are filling up, oxygen supplies and medical workers are stretched thin and recorded deaths jumped 40 percent last week alone.

But only about 1 percent of Africans have been fully vaccinated. And even the African Unions modest goal of getting 20 percent of the population vaccinated by the end of 2021 seems out of reach.

Rich nations have bought up most doses long into the future, often far more than they could conceivably need. Hundreds of millions of shots from a global vaccine-sharing effort have failed to materialize.

Supplies to African countries are unlikely to increase much in the next few months, rendering the most effective tool against Covid, vaccines, of little use in the current wave. Instead, many countries are resorting to lockdowns and curfews.

Even a year from now, supplies may not be enough to meet demand from Africas 1.3 billion people unless richer countries share their stockpiles and rethink how the distribution system should work.

The blame squarely lies with the rich countries, said Dr. Githinji Gitahi, a commissioner with Africa Covid-19 Response, a continental task force. A vaccine delayed is a vaccine denied.

JERUSALEM Last spring, Israels remarkably swift vaccination campaign was seen as a global model. Coronavirus infections plummeted, an electronic pass allowed the vaccinated to attend indoor concerts and sporting events, and distancing rules and mask mandates were eventually scrapped.

Israel offered the world a hopeful glimpse of the way out of the pandemic.

    No longer.

A fourth wave of infections is rapidly approaching the levels of Israels worst days of the pandemic last winter. The daily rate of confirmed new virus cases has more than doubled in the last two weeks, making Israel a rising hot spot on the international charts.

Restrictions on gatherings and commercial and entertainment venues were reinstated this week, and the government is considering a new lockdown.

I believe we are at war, Israels coronavirus commissioner, Prof. Salman Zarka, told a parliamentary committee on Wednesday.

Everyone went about the business of trying to put the memory of a very difficult year and a half behind them, said Prof. Ran Balicer, chairman of an expert panel that advises the Israeli government on Covid response.

    How Is Each State Doing

Some jurisdictions have been more efficient than others at administering their doses from the federal government.

*Includes doses provided to Palau, Micronesia and the Marshall Islands.

There are many reasons for variation among the states and territories, including demand for the vaccine, lags in data reporting and other logistical challenges. State progress varies by age group as well.

    Nfl Modifies Its Covid

    From CNN’s Kevin Dotson

The National Football League has reduced the amount of time that players who test positive for Covid-19 may have to isolate from their team, according to a league memo that was distributed to teams Tuesday and obtained by CNN.

NFL players who test positive for Covid-19 and are asymptomatic will now have to isolate for five days rather than the previous period of 10 days. The new protocols are in line with updated guidance provided by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Monday.

The memo clarifies that fully vaccinated players may test out of isolation in less than five days if they return multiple negative tests as outlined under previous protocols. Non-fully vaccinated players will not be able to rejoin the team in less than five days under any circumstances, the memo explains.

All players cleared to return to the team after five days of isolation as described in Tuesdays memo will be required to wear a KN-95 or N-95 mask at all times other than when actively engaged in physical activity at practice or in a game for an additional five days.

All changes take effect immediately and will remain in place through the conclusion of the regular season, according to the memo.

    The Us Breaks Its Single

With more than 580,000 cases, the United States shattered its own record for new daily coronavirus cases beating a milestone it already broke just the day before.

Thursdays count, according to The New York Timess database, toppled the 488,000 new cases on Wednesday, which was nearly double the highest numbers from last winter. The back-to-back record-breaking days are a growing sign of the viruss fast spread and come as the world enters its third year of the pandemic.

Hospitalizations and deaths, however, have not followed the same dramatic increase, further indication that the Omicron variant seems to be milder than Delta and causes fewer cases of severe illness. In the past two weeks, deaths are down by five percent, with a daily average of 1,221, while hospitalizations increased by just 15 percent to an average of 78,781 per day.

Across the country, airlines canceled thousands of flights, leaving would-be travelers stranded, while others waited in line for hours to get their hands on a coronavirus test.

The high numbers are even more striking considering that experts associate the holiday season with major disturbances in testing and data reporting. The rise of at-home tests could also mean some cases arent making into the official count.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday raised its Covid-19 warning level for cruise ships to 4, the highest, and issued a blunt warning: Avoid cruise travel regardless of vaccination status.

Do People Die From Covid After Getting The Covid

New data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests 99.999% of people who were fully vaccinated against COVID-19 did not have a severe breakthrough case that led to hospitalization or death, CNN reports.

    • Per the CDC, more than 166 million people have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
    • The new data suggests 1,507 people of those fully vaccinated people died from COVID-19.
    • Meanwhile, 7,101 people of those fully vaccinated people were hospitalized from COVID-19.

  • Israeli Hospital Studies Effects Of A Fourth Dose Of The Covid

Vermont launches vaccine dashboard to track how many people have been vaccinated

An Israeli hospital is studying the effectiveness and safety of a fourth dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

Well, Im excited to be the first person, apparently, in the world who got the fourth booster of the Covid vaccine. And to paraphrase an old saying, its a small jab in the shoulder, probably a giant step for mankind. What were planning to study is how, first of all, the immunogenicity, how much the immune response of 150 volunteers who volunteered to participate, how high will their antibody response be? Were checking both antibodies and T-cell response and later on also the B-cell repertoire. And, of course, were looking at safety as well.

JERUSALEM Israel on Thursday approved a fourth dose of Covid vaccine for people with weakened immune systems, moving ahead of much of the world in taking a little-studied step to try to protect its most vulnerable against the fast-spreading Omicron variant.

The decision by health officials came more than a week after an advisory panel of Israeli experts recommended a fourth dose for people with weak immune systems, as well as for others at high risk, including those aged 60 and over and health workers.

The panel had acknowledged the uncertainties and lack of data surrounding both Omicron and the fourth dose, but presented data indicating a significant waning of immunity in people aged 60 or older, who were the first to receive their third shots starting in August.
