Cdc Investigating 86 Cruise Ships For Covid
From CNNs Kay Jones
At least 86 cruise ships are being investigated for Covid-19 outbreaks by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, while another three are being monitored after reporting positive cases onboard.
The CDCs website shows that 86 ships are being investigated for coronavirus outbreaks under the yellow status while another three ships have orange status, which means they have reported Covid-19 cases on board but do not meet the agencys threshold for investigation at this point.
Yellow status for cruise ships under the CDC guidelines means that at least one of the following criteria are being met: at or above the investigation threshold for crew COVID-19 cases at or above the investigation threshold for passenger COVID-19 cases or state or local health department notified CDC of passenger COVID-19 cases occurring within 5 days of disembarkation.
No ships are in the red status area, which the CDC classifies as at or above the CDC investigation threshold for passenger and crew.
The color-coding system is for foreign-flagged cruise ships operating in US waters, the CDC says.

Getting The Vaccine Is Like Tripling Your Odds Of Hitting The Jackpot To Stay Out Of The Hospital With Covid
PENNSYLVANIA The vast majority of hospitalizations in Pennsylvania due to COVID-19 are among unvaccinated people, authorities said, as the latest statistics on the spread of the virus were made available from the state Department of Health.
Over the past month, 74 percent of the statewide 4,989 hospitalizations due to the virus were among persons who had not received the shot.
“That means that fully vaccinated people have a greater than three times better chance of staying out of the hospital due to COVID-19,” Acting Physician General Dr. Denise Johnson said in a statement. “Another way to look at it, if you are playing the lottery and there is something you could do to triple your odds of hitting the jackpot, would you do it?”

China Ends 2021 With Worst Covid Week Since Taming Original Epidemic
01 Jan 2022 09:16
China ended its final week of 2021 with its biggest tally of local coronavirus cases for any seven-day period since subduing the countrys first epidemic nearly two years ago, despite an arsenal of some of the worlds toughest Covid-19 measures.
The National Health Commission reported 175 new community infections with confirmed clinical symptoms for 31 December, bringing the total number of local symptomatic cases in mainland China in the past week to 1,151.
The surge has been driven mostly by an outbreak in the northwestern industrial and tech hub of Xian, a city of 13 million.
The deepening outbreak in Xian will most likely firm authorities resolve to curb transmissions quickly as and when cases emerge. The city, under lockdown for 10 days as of Saturday, has reported 1,451 local symptomatic cases since 9 December, the highest tally for any Chinese city in 2021.
While Chinas case count is tiny compared with many outbreaks elsewhere in the world, forestalling major flare-ups in 2022 will be important. Beijing will be hosting the Winter Olympic Games in February, and the ruling Communist party will hold a once-every-five-years congress, expected in the fall, where President Xi Jinping is likely to secure a third term as party secretary.

Covid Vaccinations For Kids And Boosters
The percentages in this story reflect the total share of the population that has received vaccines. That now includes people as young as 5 years old, for whom vaccines have been authorized.
These weekly stories will be updated as more data on vaccination rates in children, as well as booster vaccination rates, are released.
We pull data on local vaccine distribution on a weekly basis. Check back for our next weekly update mid-week for the latest numbers.
What Share Of The Population Has Been Fully Vaccinated Against Covid
The following chart shows the share of the total population that has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. This represents the share that have received all doses prescribed by the vaccination protocol. If a person receives the first dose of a 2-dose vaccine, this metric stays the same. If they receive the second dose, the metric goes up by 1.
This data is only available for countries which report the breakdown of doses administered by first and second doses.

Why Is The 70% Vaccination Rate Important
In the early days of the COVID vaccine distribution, 70% often was touted as the goal to reach herd or population immunity a point at which a significant portion of a population becomes immune to a disease either through vaccinations or exposure, ultimately reducing the likelihood that it will continue to spread and affect those who cannot be vaccinated.
In May, when the state reached a 70% partial vaccination rate, Wolf said he would lift his masking order if the full vaccination rate reached the same milestone. The order was lifted in late June, with the target goal having not been met.
However, medical experts like Chief Infection Control and Prevention Officer for Lehigh Valley Health Network Dr. Alex Benjamin, said the precise metric to reach herd immunity has changed, in part thanks to new variants of the disease like delta.
The concept of herd immunity still applies and we know that states with higher vaccination rates see fewer children come down with disease from COVID. The exact threshold for achieving herd immunity is a moving target when new variants are active, because we dont know who exactly is considered vulnerable and who is susceptible , Benjamin said.
Even the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that “we are still learning how many people need to be vaccinated against COVID-19 before the population can be considered protected.”
Shorter Periods After Positive Tests Contact With Positive Case
Ken Haddad, Digital Special Projects
The CDC has issued new guidance on how long you need to quarantine after a positive COVID-19 test or contact with someone who tests positive.
The new guidance reduces the length of time people are recommended to quarantine in almost all cases. Heres what the CDC said:
New CDC guidelines on COVID quarantine:
Given what we currently know about COVID-19 and the Omicron variant, CDC is shortening the recommended time for isolation from 10 days for people with COVID-19 to 5 days, if asymptomatic, followed by 5 days of wearing a mask when around others.
The change is motivated by science demonstrating that the majority of SARS-CoV-2 transmission occurs early in the course of illness, generally in the 1-2 days prior to onset of symptoms and the 2-3 days after. Therefore, people who test positive should isolate for 5 days and, if asymptomatic at that time, they may leave isolation if they can continue to mask for 5 days to minimize the risk of infecting others.
Additionally, CDC is updating the recommended quarantine period for those exposed to COVID-19. For people who are unvaccinated or are more than six months out from their second mRNA dose and not yet boosted, CDC now recommends quarantine for 5 days followed by strict mask use for an additional 5 days.

Limits On Freedom In The Uk ‘last Resort’ Health Secretary Says
01 Jan 2022 08:53
Restrictions on freedom must be an absolute last resort and the UK must live alongside coronavirus in 2022, the health secretary, Sajid Javid, has said.
But Javid added the record-breaking Omicron wave of infection will test the limits of finite NHS capacity even more than a typical winter as reports suggested a work from home order in England could be in place for most of January to slow the spread of the highly transmissible variant.
Government figures showed a further 189,846 lab-confirmed Covid-19 cases had been recorded in the UK on Friday, another new record for daily reported cases. A leading statistician said the actual number of daily cases could be closer to half a million, with the UK going into the new year in the midst of an unprecedented wave of infections.
Javid, writing in the Daily Mail, said England had welcomed in 2022 with some of the least restrictive measures in Europe, with the UK government at odds with the devolved nations in choosing to keep nightclubs open and to allow hospitality to operate without further measures for new year celebrations.
Curbs on our freedom must be an absolute last resort and the British people rightly expect us to do everything in our power to avert them, the health secretary continued.
Since I came into this role six months ago, Ive also been acutely conscious of the enormous health, social and economic costs of lockdowns.
Vaccine Support For People With Disabilities
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has started a national hotline to help people with disabilities access information and resources for COVID-19 vaccinations. The Disability Information and Access Line service can connect callers with information regarding how to access the vaccine, including local clinics. Additionally, it can also connect them to valuable local and national disability resources.

Who Is Getting Breakthrough Covid Cases
According to the CDC, most of the severe breakthrough cases about 74% had been among seniors who were 65 years or older, CNN reports.
- About 20% of the people who died from COVID-19 after a breakthrough case died from something other than COVID-19, though they had a breakthrough case when they died, according to CNN.
The Year Has Changed The Coronavirus Surge Hasnt
The new year is here and has brought the Omicron-driven virus wave along with it.
More than 3.5 million people worldwide died from the coronavirus in 2021, almost twice as many as in 2020. The Delta variant wreaked havoc around the world, and now the Omicron variant, which has already become dominant in the United States, is fueling a spike in cases.
Omicron has spread to more than 100 countries after it was first identified in Botswana and South Africa in late November, infecting previously vaccinated people as well as those who have previously been infected. But South African officials say their country has now crested its Omicron wave, and new cases are falling, all without a major increase in deaths offering hope that, while other countries may see similar weeks of intensity, they may also see drop-offs and fewer deaths than in previous waves.
For the United States, the coming weeks look difficult. Well be in for a tough January, as cases will keep going up and peak, and then fall fast, said Ali Mokdad, a University of Washington epidemiologist who is a former Centers for Disease Control and Prevention scientist.
While virus cases will still overwhelm hospitals, he said, he expects that the proportion of cases resulting in hospitalization will be lower than in earlier waves.Studies in animals suggest that Omicron does not invade the lungs as readily, which may help explain its generally lessened severity.

Nhl Postpones 10 Additional Games Due To Covid
From CNN’s David Close
The National Hockey League has postponed an additional 10 games due to issues caused by the on-going Covid-19 pandemic.
On Tuesday, the NHL revealed nine of the games were being postponed due to attendance restrictions in host cities within Canada. The tenth game, Wednesday’s Detroit Red Wings at New York Islanders contest, was postponed due to Covid-related issues impacting both teams.
The NHL says upcoming games hosted in Ottawa, Calgary, Toronto, Montreal and Winnipeg will be rescheduled when attendance restrictions “may be eased or lifted.”
The league has postponed a total of 80 games this season.
Specific games impacted within Canada are outlined within Tuesdays league announcement here.
Why Data Matter
Senior public health officials in Delaware, Oregon, and New Jersey said they found it important to track more granular breakthrough case data in order to see, for instance, if immunity was waning in people who got a certain vaccine, were of a certain age, or were infected by a particular variant.
None of their health departments were prepared to do that kind of data collection at the start of the pandemic, and they all spent weeks building computer systems that would link vaccination and medical records the same process Pennsylvania is undertaking, and a much heavier lift than most people realized, said Rattay. In Oregon, employees started working on it when the vaccine rollout began last winter and finished in the spring.
Its all about competing priorities, and this was a priority for Oregon, said Melissa Sutton, a medical director and senior health adviser for that state. But there were a lot of people working overtime pretty much around the clock to make it happen.
Having the information allowed Oregon, along with about a dozen other states, to make reports to the CDC that the federal government ultimately used when deciding to approve booster shots.
