How Many People Have Died

The first death linked to the coronavirus in Texas occurred March 15, 2020 in Matagorda County. As of Feb. 24, 83,121 people who tested positive for the virus have died in Texas. DSHS counts deaths based on death certificates that list COVID-19 as the cause of death, which excludes deaths of people with COVID-19 who died of another cause.

Some regions with the highest mortality rates are predominantly Hispanic. The virus has been more deadly in Hidalgo and Cameron counties in the Rio Grande Valley, where death rates rival more populous parts of the state like Dallas and San Antonio. In El Paso County, thousands of residents have died of COVID-19 since the pandemic began, placing the region far ahead of other major urban counties in deaths per 1,000 residents.

Immunity Heading Into The Holidays

The new report is particularly well-timed, officials say, because gatherings throughout the holiday season could touch off another surge as families get together many of them for the first time since last year and around 9 million Texans remain unvaccinated.

Texas saw its deadliest surge of the pandemic in January, when more than 400 deaths were reported daily at its peak, a trend health officials said was likely a direct result of the holidays.

The recent Texas Coronavirus Antibody Response Survey, commissioned by the state health department in partnership with the University of Texas System, estimated that about 75% of Texans roughly 22 million people likely have some level of protection against the virus, either by natural immunity from being infected or through vaccination.

But that doesnt mean infected people are immune indefinitely or that they shouldnt get the vaccine, health experts say.

In fact, doctors, scientists and health officials urge those who have been infected to get vaccinated anyway, saying the vaccine provides a strong boost in immunity even to those who have some level of natural protection.

County-level data is most accurate in states that report county of residence to the CDC for a high percentage of people vaccinated. In states that report the county of residence at a lower rate, the vaccination rate for counties may appear to be lower than it actually is.

For this reason, data is not shown for states that included a county of residence for less than 80% of people vaccinated there. Hawaii does not report county of residence information to the CDC.

Will There Be Enough Covid

Though the initial supply of the COVID-19 vaccine will be limited, additional doses of the vaccine will be available as manufacturing and distribution ramp up. Initial doses are being allocated for critical populations, including health care workers, other essential workers, and people more likely to develop severe disease, like older adults and those with underlying health conditions.

Who Can Get A Covid

Anyone who’s age 18 and older is now eligible for a booster shot. People who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine as their primary dose can receive any of the three approved COVID-19 vaccines as their booster shot at least two months after they first got vaccinated. People who received the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine are allowed to get a booster shot at least six months after completing their initial two-shot vaccination series.

The Texas CARES study found that fully vaccinated participants showed significantly higher antibody levels than those who were unvaccinated but had been infected.

A week ago, the CDC found that while both vaccination and natural infection provide about six months of protection from infection by the virus, the vaccine provides a higher, more robust, and more consistent level of immunity than natural infection does.

And while the fact that a solid majority of Texans are estimated to have some protection from the virus bodes well for the state in its fight against the pandemic, Shuford said, it still means that millions of Texans are vulnerable to severe illness or death from the highly contagious virus, without any vaccine or natural immunity.

Those susceptible populations can still get infected, and the holidays are the perfect time for that, she said. Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years. These are all times that people gather together, and COVID-19 can easily be transmitted at these gatherings.

While the initial distribution of the vaccine took longer than federal projections had indicated, in recent months the U.S. has made great leaps in the worldwide race to administer vaccinations — and some states are faring far better than others. Under the current system, led by the White House COVID-19 Response Team, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sends states limited shipments of the vaccine as well as funding and tasks them with distributing the vaccine in accordance with relatively loose federal guidelines. The distribution of the vaccine is based on the size of the adult population in every state, which — according to some experts — can create inequities in states where the spread of COVID-19 is worse and a larger share of the population is at risk.

Texas has received a total of 55,763,515 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine as of January 20. Adjusted for population, Texas has received 192,315.3 vaccines per 100,000 residents — less than the national average of 199,635.4 vaccines per 100,000 Americans and the 23rd most of any state.

While Texas has so far received fewer vaccines per capita than the nation as a whole, the state has a need for vaccines commensurate with the rest of the country. As of January 20, there were 19,466.2 confirmed cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 residents in Texas — in line with the national rate of 20,545.2 cases per 100,000 Americans and the 14th lowest of all 50 states.

How Many New Cases Are Reported Each Day

On Feb. 24, Texas reported 3,805 new confirmed cases and 2,055 new probable cases for a total of 5,860.

There have been 5.4 million confirmed cases, which are detected through PCR lab tests. In November 2020, the state reported the first of 1.1 million probable cases, which are detected through rapid tests.

The state reports very limited demographic data for people who have had COVID-19, so the impact on Texans of color is difficult to measure.

What Else Should I Know About This Data

These numbers come from the Texas Department of State Health Services, which typically updates statewide case counts by 4 p.m. each day.

In order to publish data quickly, the state has to bypass what is normally a monthslong process of reviewing infectious disease data and performing quality checks before publishing. Thatâs why all of these numbers and information are provisional and subject to change.

The stateâs data includes cases from federal immigration detention centers, federal prisons and starting in mid-May 2020, state prisons. It does not include cases or vaccinations reported at military bases.

Total population counts for the state and its counties are from the 2020 U.S. census. The stateâs population by race, ethnicity and age group are from the Census Bureauâs Vintage 2019 population estimates.

Local State Of Disaster Declared By City Of Killeen

Update: The disaster declaration was re-issued for the purposes of state and federal funding eligibility. The original one ended on June 1, when Bell County terminated their disaster declaration. This will assist with pandemic-related resources and expenses and is an administrative step.

A local state of disaster for a public health emergency has been declared for the City of Killeen, Texas, effective Thursday, Aug. 19.

Mayor Jose Segarra signed the declaration today and it will continue upon approval by the City Council of Killeen, remaining in effect until it is terminated by the mayor.

This action activates the Citys emergency management plan and authorizes aid and assistance. It also authorizes the City to take any necessary actions to promote health and suppress the virus, including but not limited to quarantining patients, establishing quarantine stations, as well as testing stations, vaccination stations and emergency hospitals and insuring compliance for those who do not comply with the Citys rules and directives.

As a reminder, residents are asked to text their zip code to GETVAX for a list of nearby locations to receive a COVID-19 vaccine shot. Why Are They Unvaccinated

Mistrust is the leading cause of vaccine hesitancy, Lakey said, and the core of the mistrust usually depends on a persons culture.

Hesitancy for white conservatives, he said, hinges on distrust of government, while for Hispanic and Black residents its often a lack of trust in the health care system because of generations of disparities in the American system.

For some individuals who have not had a lot of experience interacting in the health care system perhaps they dont have a primary care physician this might create further doubt when we start talking about a vaccine because these kinds of experiences are new, said Dr. John Carlo, CEO of Prism Health North Texas.

He added that while he wishes fewer people were hesitant about the vaccine, he understands the uncertainty.

I think the big thing that I would say is that we just have to continue to listen and see where people are on this because oftentimes, people arent completely opposed to it, Carlo said. Theres a lingering concern and maybe questions could be answered.

Alma Peña, a 40-year-old Austin resident, didnt trust the coronavirus vaccine when it first came out and resisted getting it all of spring.

I was afraid that something would happen to me when I got the vaccine, she said in Spanish.

Im afraid, Peña said.

She took her 13-year-old son Joseph to get his first dose on July 21 at the same church, right before he starts seventh grade in August.

People trust the churches, Todd said.

Are The Most Vulnerable Counties Being Vaccinated
