Petco Love Gifts Community With Free Pet Vaccines
As Part of Petco Loves Initiative to Provide 1 Million Free Pet Vaccines, Planned PEThood of GA Will Distribute Free Pet Vaccines to all patients through the end of February. This includes patients here for surgery, vaccine clinics, or our new Wellness Clinic.
The free vaccines are made possible through Petco Loves new national vaccination initiative, which is providing 1 million free pet vaccines to its existing animal welfare partners, including Planned PEThood of GA for family pets in need.
Parvovirus and distemper in dogs, and panleukopenia in cats, are some of the most prevalent deadly diseases impacting pets that are preventable with a simple vaccine. An estimated 30% of pet parents do not take their pet to a veterinarian annually for preventative care. To address this critical need, we are partnering with Petco Love to make pet vaccines free and accessible in an effort to ensure the health and wellness of our beloved pets.
Planned PEThood of GA aims to vaccinate 3,000 pets through this effort. In addition to offering it for free to animals visiting their Duluth clinic, they are hosting a free community outreach event in Habersham County on February 26th to aid a heavily underserved area.
Thanks to Petco Love, we can offer these important vaccines at no cost to pet owners, said Lauren Frost, Development Coordinator. We urge community members to take advantage of this free resource and ensure the health and wellness of our communitys pets.
Vaccinations For Your Pet
Vaccines help prevent many illnesses that affect pets. Vaccinating your pet has long been considered one of the easiest ways to help him live a long, healthy life. Not only are there different vaccines for different diseases, there are different types and combinations of vaccines. Vaccination is a procedure that has risks and benefits that must be weighed for every pet relative to his lifestyle and health. Your veterinarian can determine a vaccination regime that will provide the safest and best protection for your individual animal.

How Pet Vaccine Costs Are Determined
Experts say the tradeoff of using a high-quality vaccine is that it has become more and more expensive for vaccine makers to jump through the necessary regulatory hoops to get a new or updated product on the market. Pharmaceutical companies pass that cost on to veterinary clinics, and they sometimes have to pass it on to their clients.
In McCords practice, vaccine prices have increased over the past several years. One thing that has changed is the configuration of some vaccines. Vaccines like the five-way for cats that include protection against five different illnesses in one needle. Combined vaccines like these pack a bigger price punch than a single vaccine, but many owners believe its kinder to the animal than giving multiple injections.
Some clinics also prefer longer-acting protection now available. Rabies vaccines are now available with one- or three-year protection. Although a pet will still need to come back to the clinic for other shots only available in annual formats, a longer-term shot does eliminate one more needle stick at the next visit.
Ruch-Gallie added that the federal regulations a vaccine company must meet to market a vaccine have gotten significantly more complicated and more expensive in the past several years.
McCord sees prices of vaccines to his clinic rise, typically about 2 or 3 percent per year.

Low Cost Pet Vaccinations
Live in a high-cost area like Boston, San Diego, or New York. Going to a vet and getting the full range of shots can cost several hundred dollars.
While its true you dont have to pay all of that at once, even for the puppys first year, on average youll end up paying at least $100.
Animal shelters are a good alternative. Usually, shelters charge much less. You can save up to 75 percent in comparison to having the shots at a traditional vet.
And if you get your dog from a shelter, sometimes you wont even have to pay for shots. Thats because the dog will most likely already have been vaccinated.
If you have to pay for an adoption fee, it usually includes the cost of the pets previous shots.
Another way to save money on shots is to visit a local chain store. Petco and Walgreens are two examples. Lets look at what the former offers.

Petco Love Will Provide 1 Million Vaccines To Animal Welfare Partners For Distribution To Pets In Need
National Nonprofit, Petco Love, Aims to End Deadly Preventable Diseases in Pets
SAN ANTONIO, Aug. 16, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Today, Petco Love is taking action to help end life-threatening diseases, preventable by vaccines, in our beloved pets. Petco Love will allocate 1 million free pet vaccines to its existing community-based animal welfare partners to distribute to family pets in need. With August as National Immunization Awareness Month, a campaign to highlight the importance of vaccinations for people, it also serves as a reminder of the critical importance of vaccinating our pets.
According to experts, rabies, parvovirus, and distemper in dogs and panleukopenia in cats are the top diseases preventable by vaccines impacting our pets nationally, and estimates are that nearly 30% of pet owners don’t regularly bring their companions to see a veterinarian at least once a year.
“Although many pet parents already vaccinate their pets with these core canine and feline vaccines, many cannot afford or are unaware just how important this standard preventative care is to ensure the health and longevity of our beloved pets,” explained Dr. Whitney Miller, Petco’s Chief Veterinarian. “While vaccines have been available for decades and are highly effective in preventing deadly diseases, the best way to ensure overall pet health and wellness is to make them readily available for all.”

Determining The Timing And Frequency Of Vaccinations
Your veterinarian can best determine a vaccination schedule for your pet. This will depend on the type of vaccine, your pets age, medical history, environment and lifestyle.
For puppies: If his mother has a healthy immune system, a puppy will most likely receive antibodies in mothers milk while nursing. Puppies should receive a series of vaccinations starting at six to eight weeks of age. A veterinarian should administer a minimum of three vaccinations at three- to four-week intervals. The final dose should be administered at 16 weeks of age.
For adult dogs: Some adult dogs might receive certain vaccines annually, while other vaccines might be given every three years or longer.
For kittens: Kittens automatically receive antibodies in the milk their mother produces if their mother has a healthy immune system. When the kitten is around six to eight weeks of age, your veterinarian can begin to administer a series of vaccines at three- or four-week intervals until the kitten reaches 16 weeks of age.
For adult cats: Adult cats might be revaccinated annually or every three years.

Free Pet Vaccines Available At Animal Services Thanks To Petco Love
Petco Love donated 600 vaccines for cats and dogs to be administered by the end of the month.
Pasco County Animal Services is offering residents the opportunity to vaccinate their cats and dogs free of charge after receiving a donation of doses from Petco Love.
The vaccines are for distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza and parvovirus in dogs and feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus and panleukopenia in cats. PCAS Director Mike Shumate said he hopes to vaccinate 600 cats and dogs by the end of November. Appointments are available each Tuesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon at Pasco County Animal Services, Adoption Center , 19640 Dogpatch Lane, Land O Lakes.
PCAS will be closed Nov. 11 in observation of Veterans Day, and it will resume appointments for the following week. Keep an eye open for Saturday appointments, as PCAS might decide to open one day for working residents unable to come during the work week.
This is part of a national program and a big incentive Petco Love wanted to do to help local communities with pet health, Shumate said. They basically offered these free vaccines to any shelter organization that wanted to come on board with them. Its just for personal pets.
Getting your pet vaccinated with DAPPV or FVRCP is an important step in your pets protection from deadly disease. Shumate said its especially important to make sure your cat or dog is vaccinated if they are around other pets, even if they are an adult.
