Opportunities For Delivering Other Adolescent Health Services Alongside The Hpv Vaccine

How much will the COVID-19 vaccine cost you?

Although adolescent girls are the only target of the current South African HPV vaccination programme, it is well recognized that both adolescent girls and boys have other healthcare needs and should have access to a full-range of services including deworming, screening for vision and hearing impairment, sexual and reproductive health education, access to contraception and menstrual hygiene products, other adolescent vaccinations, mental healthcare, and counseling and rehabilitation for substance abuse . Integrating health services is a cost-effective way of delivering adolescent health services all the while increasing adolescents’ interaction with the health system and improving their well-being and quality of life. In this way, delivering other adolescent health services alongside the HPV vaccine can simultaneously improve uptake of these services and vaccine coverage rates . Successful delivery of other adolescent health services alongside the HPV vaccine has been reported in other LMICs in sub-Saharan Africa, like Rwanda and Uganda .

Human Papillomavirus vaccine or HPV vaccine for injection, preventive vaccine for cervical cancer

The HPV vaccine saves lives. It does so by reducing a persons chance of being infected by the human papilloma virus, a virus that causes a whole range of cancers including, most importantly, cervical cancer. Vaccinate your teenage daughter against HPV, and you will increase the chance she will live to old age. Simple as that.

Yet currently, the majority of American teenagers, boys and girls, are reaching adulthood without the full protection of the vaccine. Sometimes they dont get vaccinated because they or their parents are opposed to the vaccine . To increase vaccination rates, we need to overcome peoples resistance to this vaccine.

But theres something else thats preventing kids from getting vaccinated that might even be more maddening than anti-vaxxers insurance companies arent covering the full cost of the vaccine, causing some physicians too, shall we say, less than aggressively promote the intervention. To increase vaccination rates among American children, insurance companies need to reimburse providers more generously for vaccinating their patients.

Thats why it is important to pay providers well enough for the vaccine, to at least cover the costs of purchasing, storing, and administering it. Sadly, thats not always the case. As a result, some providers are less than enthusiastic about urging their patients to undergo the vaccine.

What Are The Vaccines Made From

HPV vaccines stimulate the immune system to prepare antibodies against these viruses. They do not contain viruses or parts of viruses. They are made from proteins that mimic the viral envelope and are unable to infect the person who is given the vaccine. In other words, these vaccines cannot transmit a HPV infection.

Like many other vaccines, HPV vaccines contain an adjuvant, which is used to increase the immune systems response to the vaccine. HPV vaccines do not contain any preservatives, latex, antibiotics, thimerosal or mercury.

HPV vaccines are developed in accordance with the usual process prescribed by Health Canada. This process regulates and oversees vaccine research, manufacturing, licensing, efficacy and safety. All vaccines must go through this process in order to be distributed in Canada.

The manufacturer of the Cervarix® vaccine has not taken steps for this vaccine to be licensed in Canada for use in boys. It is therefore approved for use in girls and women age 9 to 45. However, scientific data, including data from a study conducted in Québec, shows that this vaccine is safe and produces a similar immune response in boys and girls. In addition, in Europe this vaccine is approved for use in boys and girls age 9 or older. Norway has been using two doses of the Cervarix® vaccine for both boys and girls since September 2018.

Vaccines For Children Program

The Vaccines for Children program is a federal entitlement for eligible children created by Congress in 1993 in response to a measles outbreak that extended from 1989 through 1991. In 2020, the program had a budget of about $4.8 billion. Under this program, the CDC purchases vaccines directly from manufacturers and distributes them to grantees . Those partners then distribute the vaccines at no charge to private physicians offices and public health clinics registered as VFC providers. Vaccines recommended by ACIP are included in the VFC program. More than half of young children and one-third of adolescents in the United States are eligible to receive vaccinations through this program.9

Children under age 19 are eligible for the VFC program if they are Medicaid-eligible, uninsured, or American Indian or Alaska Native. Children can also qualify if their insurance has a cap on vaccine coverage that the child has surpassed or if their insurance does not cover all or certain vaccines.10 Those types of limitations on vaccine coverage are not permitted under standards established by the ACA,11 but some grandfathered plans or short-term plans may include these limitations on vaccine coverage.

Is There An Hpv Test For Men

Currently, theres no HPV test for people who have a penis. But if they have an HPV infection, the virus can unknowingly be transmitted.

Most people with a penis dont develop symptoms of HPV. Also, many HPV infections typically go away on their own before ever causing symptoms.

HPV infections usually go away by themselves, but they can cause penile and anal cancers if they dont.

Some doctors may offer anal Pap tests for people who have a penis, but these are generally only done for HIV-positive people who have anal sex.

For people with a penis, HPV can also cause oropharyngeal cancers.

For an HPV test, a healthcare professional will need to collect a sample of cells from your cervix. A pelvic exam is necessary for this.

The steps of an HPV test include:

  • Youll undress from the waist down or change into a hospital gown.
  • Youll lie on an exam table and place your heels in footrests.
  • Your doctor will place a speculum into the vagina. A speculum helps separate the walls of the vagina so the cervix can be found.
  • Theyll use a brush or a flat spatula to collect cell samples from the surface of your cervix or the vaginal canal.

These cell samples are then sent to a lab, where theyre checked for the presence of HPV.

Why Hpv Vaccination Is Needed

Most sexually active people will encounter HPV in their lifetimeusually by the time they reach their 30s. While many cases clear on their own without incident, some do not.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , over 36,000 new cancer diagnoses each year can be attributed to prior HPV infection. These include:

If current HPV vaccination recommendations were followed, the CDC estimates that around 33,000 of these cancers could be avoided.

Approximately 150 different strains of HPV have been identifiedwith those linked to cancers considered “high-risk” strains and those linked to genital warts being classified as “low-risk.”

The vaccine works by targeting both high- and low-risk strains. It is recommended for people of certain age groups, regardless of their sex.

Who Should Test For Hpv

While HPV tests are important, doctors primarily recommend that HPV screening begins around age 25 or 30.

HPV is very common in this age group, but most infections go away on their own. Regular testing might not always provide useful results.

Instead, women 21 to 65 should get screened for cervical cancer every 3 years. Meanwhile, women aged 30 to 65 years old should get screened and tested for HPV every 5 years.

People over the age of 21 who have a vagina should get regular Pap tests . A Pap test doesnt detect HPV, but it can show one significant symptom of the infection: abnormal cervical cells.

An abnormal Pap test result means that some cervical cells have changed and appear different from normal cells. Abnormal cells may include cervical dysplasia or carcinoma in situ. But it usually doesnt mean you have cancer and can be because of:

  • inflammation
  • HPV

If results come back abnormal, then your doctor can decide if an HPV test is needed. The initial HPV screening test is dependent on age. For those between the ages of 21 to 29, cytology is the first choice.

People between the age of 30 to 65 who have a vagina have three options for screening:

  • a cytology test
  • an HPV test
  • co-testing

If the results of the screenings come back normal, a person should have the test repeated in 5 years.

HPV is very common and the vast majority of the virus is cleared by the body. But this doesnt happen for all people, and it can remain in the body and cause cellular changes.

Number Of Doses Required

Depending on the persons age, two or three doses of the vaccine are required for the best possible protection.

For people under 18 years of age, experts believe that two doses of HPV vaccine will produce a sufficient immune response.

Based on various studies, experts believe that these two vaccines will produce a stronger immune response to HPV types 16 and 18 than two doses of Gardasil® 9. HPV 16 is responsible for most HPV-related cancers, especially cancers that affect men. Furthermore, these two vaccines provide immunity against the seven other types of HPV targeted by the Gardasil® 9 vaccine.

People aged 18 or older need three doses of Gardasil® 9.

These vaccines are more effective when the person being vaccinated has never had a HPV infection. Since the infection usually occurs in the first years of sexual activity, the vaccine should ideally be given before the person becomes sexually active. These vaccines are nonetheless indicated for people who have already had a HPV infection or lesion.

  • Itching at the injection site, fever

The Cervarix® vaccine causes a little more pain, redness and swelling at the injection site than the Gardasil® 9 vaccine.

To date, over 300 million doses of HPV vaccines have been administered worldwide. According to current scientific data, no serious or unexpected problems are associated with these vaccines. No link has been found between this vaccine and certain serious diseases or deaths.

Are There Hpv Vaccine Side Effects

Research shows that the vaccine is safe. The most common side effect is temporary pain and redness where you get the shot.

One of the reasons the HPV vaccine is controversial is because it prevents a sexually transmitted infection, which leads some people to believe its inappropriate for children. But, the thing is, the vaccine works best if you get it long before you have sex. So its a good idea to get it when youre young so you wont have to worry about getting certain kinds of cancer later in life.

Studies show that the HPV vaccine doesnt lead to people having more sex or sex at a younger age. So giving kids the HPV vaccine doesnt encourage them to have sex. All it does is help protect them from genital warts and cancer in adulthood.
