The Federal Retail Pharmacy Program Will Focus On Getting Teachers Vaccinated During March
The Federal Retail Pharmacy Program is prioritizing vaccinating all school staff and childcare workers during the month of March, according to a March 2 directive from the Department of Health and Human Services.
Teachers and staff in pre-K-12 schools and childcare programs will be able to sign up for an appointment at over 9,000 pharmacy locations, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Earlier this year, pharmacies were also on the front lines in getting vaccines into the arms of residents of long-term care facilities.
How other eligible Americans get a vaccine at their local pharmacy depends upon vaccine rollout plans in individual states and upon the supply, which has been unpredictable.
In November, even before a vaccine became available, 19 pharmacies partnered with the Department of Health and Human Services for consumer access to a COVID-19 vaccine. That number has grown to 21. On February 11, the federal government announced that one million doses would be going directly to 6,500 pharmacies as part of the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program.
But vaccination confusion plagued some initial pharmacy efforts in February.
A spokesman for CVS, among the biggest pharmacies in the Federal Pharmacy Retail Program, acknowledged the potential for vaccine appointment confusion.
The CDC directs individuals who are interested in getting vaccinated at their local pharmacy to their pharmacy’s website or to visit VaccineFinder.org.

Saving On Pharmacy Vaccinations
Just like at your doctors office, pharmacies that offer vaccinations will file with your insurance.
Many vaccinations wont cost you anything if you have a private insurance plan through your employer or that you purchased on a state marketplace. Under the Affordable Care Act, private plans are required to fully cover the cost of recommended vaccinations for adults and children as preventive medical care.
Unfortunately, Medicare doesnt do as good of a job of covering recommended immunizations. Only flu, pneumonia, and hepatitis B vaccines are fully covered under Medicare Part B. Other vaccinations are treated like prescription drugs and are covered under Medicare Part D or Advantage plans. That means youll be responsible for paying any co-pays and deductibles required by your prescription drug plan.
If youre paying out of pocket, shop around to find the lowest price. When we checked, we found the lowest prices without insurance at Costco. For example, Pneumovax pneumonia vaccine cost $110 at CVS and Target, but just $97 at Costco pharmacies. And the dual Hepatitis A and B vaccine costs $145 at CVS, $150 at Walgreens , and $93 at Costco.
Another option if you are uninsured or paying out of pocket is to check with statewide free health clinics and community health centers, which offer free or low-cost preventive care and low-cost vaccinations. Find a clinic near you.

Is The Shingles Vaccine Covered By Medicare And Can I Get It At Cvs
Because the shingles vaccine requires two doses, if you have to pay full price around $400 total it may approach the $445 maximum Part D deductible that Medicare allows for 2021.
If thats the case, you may want to consider getting your vaccine early in the year. This way you dont have to worry about your deductible resetting in a new plan year soon after meeting it. You should discuss the risks and benefits of this strategy with your healthcare provider.
As far as going to CVS Pharmacy or CVS in Target to get your shingles vaccine, this is definitely an option. You can always call ahead or go online to schedule same-day appointments, or go in on a walk-in basis at many locations.

MENINGITIS
Meningitis B Vaccine Available To Students Faculty And Staff At Umass Amherst

CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic locations near campus are fully stocked with the vaccine following two confirmed Meningitis B cases
WOONSOCKET, R.I., Nov. 30, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — CVS Health is offering Meningitis B vaccines to students, faculty and staff at UMass Amherst, in response to two confirmed cases of Meningitis B on campus. CVS Pharmacy stores and MinuteClinic walk-in medical clinics have vaccines available to protect patients against the disease.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention determined that the strains of the meningococcal bacteria that caused both student’s infections are closely related, meaning there may be an increased risk of the disease for other undergraduates on campus. UMass Amherst students who have not been vaccinated are encouraged to get vaccinated. In addition, anyone who has had close contact with a person who has been diagnosed with a meningococcal illness, as well as faculty and staff who have conditions such as asplenia, a complement deficiency, or sickle cell anemia, should also receive the vaccine.
Meningitis B vaccines are fairly new and most college students have not received the vaccine previously. All college students are required to receive a vaccine that protect against four other strains of the meningococcal disease , but that vaccine does not protect against B, which is the cause of the current infections at UMass Amherst.

Does Medicare Cover Vaccines
Medicare covers the flu and pneumococcal vaccines at 100% under Part B, along with the hepatitis B vaccine for those at higher risk. That means no out-of-pocket cost to the patient. A tetanus shot after experiencing a deep wound or burn also should be covered.
Medicare Part D plans should cover the shingles vaccine, but check with your plan. You may have to pay at least a portion out of pocket if you havent yet reached your deductible for the year . There may be a copay, depending on your plan.
How Much Do Vaccinations Like The Annual Flu Shot Cost Without Insurance
If youre uninsured, you may already know that vaccines can be expensive. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a list on its website of the vaccines it recommends for adults and at what ages they should be given.
After you find what you need, you can get an idea of how much the vaccines cost by checking out the CDCs roster of vaccine list prices. In general, prices range from $25 to over $150 for each dose of a vaccine.
Pharmacies sometimes list their prices, and if they dont, you can ask for them. For example, the shingles vaccine is given in two shots, 2 to 6 months apart. Each dose costs about $200 without insurance at CVS.
Annual flu vaccine season generally starts in August. Even a flu shot can run you $40 to $70 if you have to pay out of pocket. For tips on how to get a free or discounted flu shot, check out GoodRxs flu shot guide.
The big exception in 2021 is the COVID-19 vaccine. This is free for everyone regardless of health insurance or immigration status no matter where you receive it.

Will More Campuses Require A Booster Shot
One question that colleges and universities still need to answer is, will the CDC update the definition of what “fully vaccinated” means, given that boosters are now encouraged for all adults? “Fully vaccinated, that term is extremely important to determine what that means for the community,” explains Gerri Taylor, co-chair of the American College Health Association’s COVID-19 task force. “If, in fact, the CDC says that fully vaccinated means having a booster within six months of getting your vaccine, as an example, then the colleges may put that into their requirements.”
Her organization will issue guidance to colleges once that happens, but in the meantime, she recommends that colleges set up booster clinics on campus and encourage their communities to get an extra shot.
“Colleges are well prepared to do boosters,” she says. They “have a captive population, and the stakes are there: We want students to be back in school and we’ve heard that over and over from the American Academy of Pediatrics and from students.”
She points to two complicating factors: staffing and timing. A recent survey by the American College Health Association found the top two concerns for college health centers were staffing and burnout, because of the intensity and the duration of the pandemic.
Those, she says, are decisions colleges are making right now.

How Is Meningitis Prevented
The most effective way to protect against certain forms of bacterial meningitis is to complete the recommended vaccine schedule. Vaccines exist for three different types of meningitis-causing bacteria:
- Streptococcus pneumoniae
- Haemophilus influenzae type b
- Neisseria meningitidis
For those in contact with people with meningococcal meningitis, antibiotics may be recommended. They may also be appropriate for the entire household if one family member develops severe Haemophilus influenzae type b and there is also a high-risk person residing in the home. Other measures that can be taken to help avoid meningitis include: avoiding contact with those who are sick, getting adequate sleep/rest, not smoking, and/or avoiding cigarette smoke altogether. Those at risk for severe disease such as the elderly, infants and people with weakened immune systems, in particular, should adhere to these measures.
Factors Affecting Cost Of Meningitis Vaccine
Type of meningitis strain how much is a meningitis shot depends on the type of the meningitis strain you want your child to be protected from and would be the foremost factor to affect the price of the shots as there are several types of these vaccines in the market.
Brand there are several types of meningitis vaccines that treat the same strains but are priced differently because of the brand names.
Manufacturer some manufacturers produce vaccine shots intended to prevent the same strains but under different brands and these brands typically have varying prices.
Income if you do not have a steady source of income and do not have any health insurance, you can locate some of the federally funded health centers where you would only be required to pay what you can afford.
Insurance most health insurance cover meningitis vaccinations either partially or fully depending on your coverage.
