Particularly early on, officials didn’t adequately assess where there would be demand and set up sites in response, Lee said â which is especially important when trying to jab as many people as quickly as possible.
“If you think of any business, they’re going to determine where the customers are first,” he said. “It’s not just a matter of loading up vaccine and going to a place.”
KHN’s survey of vaccine waste is based on public records requests to the CDC and all 50 states, five major cities, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. Combined, the records document more than 200,000 wasted doses. However, the data have clear shortcomings. Data from 15 states, the District of Columbia and multiple U.S. territories aren’t included in the CDC’s records. And, in general, waste reporting has been inconsistent.
In addition to the CDC, 33 states and the District of Columbia provided at least some data to KHN in response to the records requests. They reported that at least 18,675 additional doses have been wasted across 10 jurisdictions not represented in the CDC figures. They include 9,229 doses wasted in Texas as of March 26 and 2,384 in New Hampshire as of March 10.
Eight more states told KHN about more wasted doses than they reported to the CDC.
“To me, this ultimately correlates with just poor planning,” said a critic of the corporate effort, Dr. Michael Wasserman, immediate past president of the California Association of Long Term Care Medicine.

Last November, the Trump administration announced a partnership with retail pharmacies to distribute coronavirus vaccines, which would provide people across the country with more places to get vaccines and people to administer them. Thats a good thing. The other side of it is, as the Wall Street Journal reported this week, some pharmacies are taking advantage of the program to make some extra money off of their new customers.
To schedule vaccination appointments, we ask people to create a Walgreens account to fulfill data and reporting requirements online before arriving at a store location, a Walgreens spokesperson told Recode. This enables a safer and more streamlined in-store experience reducing lines and in-store wait times that can be a by-product of collecting this information at the pharmacy counter.

“We see our stock availability levels going up significantly by mid-month. So, we’re feeling in a pretty good place in the next three months,” Chief Financial Officer James Kehoe said, without providing further details.
Walgreens now expects to administer 30 million vaccinations at its stores in fiscal 2022, adding the number could be higher based on the evolution of the Omicron variant and regulatory guidance.
While there could be a potential positive impact on earnings due to the new vaccination target for the year, management’s comments suggest there could be potential challenges from labor investments, Cowen analyst Charles Rhyee said.
For the first quarter, Walgreens posted an adjusted profit of $1.68 per share, easily beating estimates of $1.33.

How Is Meningitis Diagnosed
To diagnose meningitis, healthcare providers will do a lumbar puncture. For this procedure, a provider inserts a small needle into the lower back to get a sample of the fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. Then theyll send this fluid, called cerebrospinal fluid, to the lab to look for signs of meningitis. They can also use that fluid to isolate exactly which bacteria is causing the infection.
In addition to a lumbar puncture, someone with meningitis may also get a CT scan of the head. This is often done when there might be other causes of the symptoms, such as brain tumors or bleeding in the brain. But a CT isnt necessary to diagnose meningitis.

Meningitis Vaccine Side Effects
Mild to moderate problems may occur redness or swelling at the site of administration and/or a fever, drowsiness and/or muscle aches.
Severe problems, albeit rare, can include a difficult time breathing, wheezing, hives, pale skin, dizziness and/or a fast heartbeat.

Do You Need To Get Both Vaccines
Most people do not, but some may, depending on age and other health conditions.
Children
All healthy children should get PCV13, and children with certain health conditions should also receive PPSV23. When both vaccines are needed, they are given 8 weeks apart, and PCV13 is given first.
Adults aged 65 and over
All adults aged 65 and older should get PPSV23. If you are a healthy adult over 65, you should talk to your healthcare provider about whether you need PCV13.
PCV13 used to be recommended for all adults over age 65, but the ACIP recently changed its recommendations. This is because, as more children have been vaccinated with PCV13, the types of pneumococci that this vaccine protects against are less likely to spread and infect older adults. PCV13 can still be given, and your healthcare provider can help you decide if it is right for you.
Adults younger than 65
For adults younger than 65, PPSV23 is recommended in certain situations. If you smoke or have a chronic illness, like asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease , or liver disease, you should get PPSV23 at a younger age. Adults with other conditions, like a weakened immune system, should have both vaccines before age 65.
You Are Pregnant Or Breastfeeding
- Pregnant women who are at increased risk for serogroup A, C, W, or Y meningococcal disease may get MenACWY vaccines.
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women who are at increased risk for serogroup B meningococcal disease may get MenB vaccines. However, they should talk with a doctor to decide if the benefits of getting the vaccine outweigh the risks.

Broken Freezers Bent Needles No
The reasons states gave for waste varied, from broken vials and syringes to providers’ storage errors to leftover doses from open vials that couldn’t be used.
The largest waste incidents, in which hundreds of doses were lost at a time, tended to be due to freezer malfunctions or workers’ leaving doses at room temperature too long.
But state records also register the little things that can go wrong.
On Dec. 16, the Public Health Department in Gunnison County, Colorado, lost a single dose of the Pfizer vaccine when someone bumped into a table and a vial spilled. On Jan. 5, the Tri-County Health Department in Westminster, Colorado, reported that it wasted a Moderna dose because a hypodermic needle bent.
Remi Graber, a registered nurse who has vaccinated people at mass sites and community health clinics in Rhode Island, said it’s not uncommon for a vial to have one too many or one too few doses, which can lead to a dose’s being counted as wasted. Syringe problems also sometimes result in waste.
But Graber said the biggest problem is people who don’t show up. Once a vial is punctured, Pfizer’s vaccine must be used within six hours. On April 1, Moderna announced that an opened vaccine vial was good for 12 hours â double what it had been previously.

How Do The Pneumonia Vaccines Work
Like all vaccines, pneumococcal vaccines work by showing the immune system a version of the microbe, or a part of it, that is responsible for the infection. The pneumococcal vaccine contains part of the pneumococcus bacterias outer shell, made of molecules called polysaccharides. The immune system learns to recognize it, attack it, and defend the body against it, should it ever come into contact with the real bacteria.
The body does this by making antibodies against the shell of the pneumococcus bacteria. These antibodies stay in your bloodstream as part of your immune system. If you are exposed to pneumococci in the future, the antibodies recognize the bacterias shell and launch a targeted defense.
There are strains of pneumococcus, so the vaccines are made up of molecules from many of those strains.

CVS, Walgreens and other retailers don’t pay for the vaccines the government provides them. And under the Medicare program, it pays providers about $40 for each dose administered.

When Did The Meningitis B Vaccine Start

Although both pneumococcal vaccines can cause mild side effects, severe reactions to the vaccines are rare. In one study of adults over age 70 who received the PCV13 and PPSV23 vaccines, there was only one adverse event that was related to the vaccine.
Allergic reactions to vaccines are rare, but they can occur and may be serious. If you have had an allergic reaction to one of the ingredients in the pneumococcal vaccines or to a prior dose of a pneumococcal vaccine, you should not get vaccinated without talking to your healthcare provider first.
