What Are The Symptoms Of Shingles
Shingles is a painful rash that develops on one side of the face or body. The rash forms blisters that typically scab over in 7-10 days. Shingles typically takes 2-4 weeks to clear up.
People often feel pain, itching, or tingling in the area 1-5 days before the rash appears.
Most commonly, shingles forms a single stripe of rash on either the left or right hemisphere of the body. Occasionally, the rash occurs on one side of the face. Less commonly, the rash looks similar to chickenpox and is spread more liberally . Shingles can sometimes affect the eyes and cause loss of vision.
Other symptoms of shingles can include fever, headache, chills and upset stomach.

Shipments of COVID-19 vaccines are heading to pharmacies this week under a federal program that aims to get more people vaccinated quickly.
Twenty-one “national pharmacy partners and networks of independent pharmacies representing over 40,000 pharmacy locations nationwide” are taking part in the program, according to a government fact sheet, which includes a list of all participating pharmacies or networks.
In phase one of the distribution plan, 1 million doses were scheduled to be sent out to about 6,500 stores including Walgreens, CVS, Walmart, Publix pharmacies, and others, starting on Thursday.
Many pharmacies already vaccinate people against a number of illnesses, including the flu and shingles. Some experts have suggested that pharmacies nationwide will have the capacity to administer 100 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine once supply is available.
“Based on conservative assumptions, pharmacies have the capacity to meet the demand for 100 million vaccine doses in one month when that level of the vaccine supply is available,” Steven Anderson, president and CEO of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores, told reporters last month.

The Federal Retail Pharmacy Program Will Focus On Getting Teachers Vaccinated During March
The Federal Retail Pharmacy Program is prioritizing vaccinating all school staff and childcare workers during the month of March, according to a March 2 directive from the Department of Health and Human Services.
Teachers and staff in pre-K-12 schools and childcare programs will be able to sign up for an appointment at over 9,000 pharmacy locations, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Earlier this year, pharmacies were also on the front lines in getting vaccines into the arms of residents of long-term care facilities.
How other eligible Americans get a vaccine at their local pharmacy depends upon vaccine rollout plans in individual states and upon the supply, which has been unpredictable.
In November, even before a vaccine became available, 19 pharmacies partnered with the Department of Health and Human Services for consumer access to a COVID-19 vaccine. That number has grown to 21. On February 11, the federal government announced that one million doses would be going directly to 6,500 pharmacies as part of the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program.
But vaccination confusion plagued some initial pharmacy efforts in February.
A spokesman for CVS, among the biggest pharmacies in the Federal Pharmacy Retail Program, acknowledged the potential for vaccine appointment confusion.
The CDC directs individuals who are interested in getting vaccinated at their local pharmacy to their pharmacy’s website or to visit VaccineFinder.org.

Older adults who get the shingles vaccine can actually cut their risk of getting the painful condition in half, and those that do happen to get it are likely to have a milder case if they’ve been inoculated. Here’s what else you should know about the shingles vaccine, along with how it’s covered by Medicare.
Shingles Overview Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a burning, blistering, often excruciating skin rash that affects about 1 million Americans each year. The same virus that causes chickenpox causes it. What happens is the chickenpox virus that most people get as kids never leaves the body. It hides in the nerve cells near the spinal cord and, for some people, emerges later in the form of shingles.
In the U.S., one out of every three people will develop shingles during their lifetime. While anyone who’s had chickenpox can get shingles, it most commonly occurs in people over age 60, along with people who have weakened immune systems. But you can’t catch shingles from someone else.
In addition to the rash, more than one-third who get shingles go on to develop severe nerve pain that can last for months or even years.

What Are My Options For The Shingles Shot And How Does It Work
As of November, 2020, there is only one shingles vaccine available in the United States. This goes by the trade name Shingrix.
Shingrix was approved by the FDA in . It is more than 90 percent effective at preventing shingles and postherpetic neuralgia after two doses of the vaccine.
An earlier vaccine, Zostavax, is no longer in use in the United States as of November 18, 2020. Zostavax first got FDA approval in 2006. It was about 51 percent effective at preventing shingles and 67 percent effective at preventing PHN.

Why Do You Need The Shingles Vaccine
In a word: pain. Shingles commonly appears as a rash, usually across one side of your chest, abdomen or face. What starts as itching or tingling becomes an extremely painful band of blisters. These usually scab over in seven to 10 days and clear up in two to four weeks.4
Shingles is most common among people over the age of 50, so the Centers for Disease Controls recommends the vaccine for anyone over that age.
People with a weak immune system are at even higher risk. Your immunity may be weakened if you:5

The first time Shirley White went to the emergency room with sharp back pain, she thought shed pulled a muscle moving furniture. The doctor injected her with pain medication.
Two days later, she was back in emergency. Not only was the pain worse, but an itchy, blistery rash was spreading from her back to her front on her left side. A classic case of shingles, the doctor said. Herpes zoster, known as shingles, is caused by the chickenpox virus which lurks in the spinal nerve roots for decades after the childhood disease. Doctors dont know why the virus may suddenly reactivate later in life.
On her third visit to emergency, the pain was excruciating. I was literally screaming, says White, 77. Very sharp pains were going through me like fire.
The Caledon resident, who was laid up for nearly four months two years ago, might have avoided the illness, or at least reduced its severity, if she had gotten the shingles vaccination. Available in Canada since 2009, its recommended by the National Advisory Committee on Immunization for people age 60 and older and approved for those in their 50s. A persons lifetime risk of developing shingles is about 20 to 30 per cent, and that risk steeply increases as a person ages into their 60s and 70s.
Drug manufacturer Merck says a refrigerator-stable version will be available sometime in 2014, making handling and storage easier.
A U.S. study of adults 65 and older found only 3.9 per cent had gotten the shot.

What Steps Can You Take To Make Sure You Are Covered If You Have Medicare Advantage With Drug Coverage Or Medicare Part D

That means that as long as you go to a provider in your plans network, your insurance will pay for preventive care without a co-pay, even if you havent met your deductible.
Its really a shame that older Americans, who are most at risk of contracting shingles and most vulnerable to the potentially serious effects of the disease, often have to pay more than others for the vaccine, says Consumer Reports medical director, Orly Avitzur, M.D.
If youre currently covered by a private health plan but anticipate going on Medicare in the next five years or so, one cost-saving strategy is to talk to your doctor about updating all your vaccinations now while your insurance provides good coverage, Avitzur says. The shingles shot is recommended for nearly all adults aged 60 and older.
