Vermont has the highest percentage of its population fully vaccinated against COVID-19, according to the CDC’s COVID-19 vaccine distribution and administration data tracker.

The CDC’s data tracker compiles data from healthcare facilities and public health authorities. It updates daily to report the total number of people in each state who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. The numbers reported by the CDC may vary from the numbers published on individual states’ public health websites, as there may be reporting lags between the states and the CDC.

As of 6 a.m. EDT Dec. 21, a total of 204,578,725 Americans had been fully vaccinated, or 61.6 percent of the country’s population, according to the CDC’s data.

Below are the states and Washington, D.C., ranked by the percentage of their population that has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, according to the CDC.

Johnson & Johnson Vaccine Vs Omicron

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention panel last week recommended that people get the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine over the Johnson & Johnson vaccine due to the rare risk of blood clots.

Furthermore, data from South Africa showed that the J& J vaccine produced virtually no antibodies at all against Omicron in lab experiments.

Those who received the J& J vaccine and are worried are past the period of concern. But if theyve just received one dose of J& J, they should be urged to get a booster, said Schaffner, commenting on the latest data.

Although it is not yet a formal recommendation, mixing vaccines has been shown to increase immunogenicity, which is why physicians are advising that booster doses for J& J be Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech.

They will get a much higher antibody level , said Schaffner.

Gandhi, meanwhile, said that although she generally agreed with the CDC panel recommendation, there were still groups of people who may benefit from this vaccine.

There is a lack of data to determine its effectiveness. However, the single-shot vaccine seems to perform poorly in terms of antibodies against Omicron.

Gauging Effectiveness: Pfizer Vaccine Vs Omicron

Few real-world studies so far have managed to estimate effectiveness for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, and a number of lab studies show that a booster increases antibody production significantly.

The studies are largely laboratory studies that would indicate that levels of antibody induced by boosting will have a noteworthy impact on preventing serious disease, said Schaffner.

A preprint study conducted by Oxford University reported that two doses of the AstraZeneca or Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines offered little protection against infection with the Omicron variant.

However, a real-life study from South Africa found that two doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine still protected people from severe disease.

Researchers found that two doses provided 70 percent protection against hospitalization and 33 percent protection against infection. This was a drop from about 93 percent and 80 percent, respectively, for the Delta variant.

Dr. Monica Gandhi, an infectious diseases specialist with the University of California, San Francisco, told Healthline that although these lab studies show that antibodies, the bodys main line of defense against the coronavirus, can wane over time or be affected by mutations along the viruss spike protein, vaccines were able to generate other types of immune cells to fight off infection.

A Coronavirus Case In Beijings Olympic Bubble Is Linked To A German Team

A supervisor in Germanys Olympic delegation has tested positive for the coronavirus within the closed loop in Beijing, the German Olympic Sports Confederation said on Thursday, confirming one of the first cases connected to an athletic team within the bubblelike environment meant to shield participants from the rest of the world.

The positive case was identified on Sunday after a P.C.R. test administered in Zhangjiakou, where many of the snow events will take place about 100 miles northwest of Beijing, the confederation said. The supervisor is asymptomatic and is currently in a quarantine hotel, it said.

Beijing officials said on Thursday that eight new cases had been detected in the bubble as of the previous day. Fifteen others were found among airport arrivals of Games-related personnel. None were linked to an athlete or a team official.

Since Jan. 4, 50 cases have been identified in the closed loop, according to official data. Officials have linked one of them to an athlete or team official. Among airport arrivals, 79 cases have been detected, data show. One was an athlete or team official, and the rest were other stakeholders, officials said.

Some athletes, including those from the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary and Norway, have received positive tests before departing for the Olympics, resulting in delayed travel and throwing into question their chance of competing in the Games.

The Games are scheduled to start on Feb. 4.

Your Vaccination Records Might Be On Your Phone

You could be lucky enough to live in one of the states that let people access their vaccination records from their smartphones. Those states include Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, , Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Utah and Washington.

Other states have websites where vaccination information can be requested, usually as a PDF or email. Those states include Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Wisconsin.

Things get a little more complicated if youre in one of the states that didnt go digital, unfortunately. But you should be able to get your vaccination records by requesting them from your state or county health department.

States receive vaccine allocations based on their total adult populations. Each state has its own plan for how to get those vaccines out to its residents through county health offices, hospital systems, pharmacies, mass vaccination sites and mobile clinics. Some states are encountering hesitancy and resistance to getting vaccinated among their populations.

The federal strategy for giving out shots has pivoted from mass vaccination sites, which served millions of people per day at stadiums and conference centers in the spring, to targeted efforts at local pharmacies, doctors’ offices, schools, work sites and community health centers.

Pfizer Booster Vs Omicron

Early analysis from the United Kingdom has suggested that boosters have moderate to high vaccine effectiveness against symptomatic infection, offering 70 to 75 percent protection in the initial weeks after the booster.

Researchers found a slight difference depending on whether the initial doses were from the AstraZeneca vaccine or Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Both groups had Pfizer-BioNTech boosters.

Two weeks after a Pfizer-BioNTech booster dose, vaccine effectiveness for people who received the AstraZeneca vaccine increased to around 71 percent and to about 76 percent for those who initially got the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

As for severe disease, modeling by Imperial College London found that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine with a booster was around 85.9 percent effective against Omicron, compared with about 97 percent against Delta.

Early data from Pfizer had indicated that a booster dose significantly increased neutralizing antibodies, bringing the vaccines protection close to what two doses provided against the original variant of the coronavirus.

The data comes from a series of lab experiments testing the neutralizing ability of blood samples from people who had two doses of the vaccine and those who had received a booster.

The neutralizing ability of the antibodies collected from those who did not have a booster had a more than 25-fold decline against Omicron than the original variant.

US to share up to 60 million doses of AstraZeneca COVID vaccine

BBC News

The UK is ramping up its Covid vaccine booster campaign – part of an attempt to reduce the impact of the new Omicron variant, currently spreading across a number of countries.

With nine in 10 of those aged 12 or over having had a single jab and eight in 10 having had a second, the focus has shifted to boosters, which show promising signs of protecting against illness and death from Omicron.

About 32 million boosters or third doses have been given so far.

Cdc Announces 79% Of All Us Omicron Cases Have Occurred In Vaccinated Individuals

The newest variant of COVID-19 is the omicron strain.

The omicron variant is showing up all over the world and now the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released a report outlining what is known so far about the new variant.

The CDC report found that the majority of Americans who have been infected with omicron were actually already vaccinated.

Among these cases of COVID-19 attributed to the Omicron variant, 34 occurred in persons who completed the primary series of an FDA-authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccine 14 days before symptom onset or receipt of a positive SARS-CoV-2 test result, the report noted.

This figure included 14 individuals, or nearly a third, who had also received an additional or booster dose of the vaccine.

Twenty-two states have already reported at least one case of the omicron variant.

South Africa was the first country to alert the rest of the world to the existence of omicron in November, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Since then the variant has been showing up in Europe, the U.K. and the United States.

Currently, the U.K. has the most cases of the omicron variant, and the rest of the world is observing how the country is handling the new crisis.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson began reimposing some COVID restrictions on the country in order to stop the spread of omicron, the Journal reported.

A ‘fundamental Human Right’

CBC News interviewed an unvaccinated traveller from Halifax who flew to Mexico on Nov. 18, less than two weeks before Canada’s vaccine requirement took effect.

CBC is withholding the traveller’s name because he fears backlash for travelling abroad while unvaccinated.

He said he left Canada with no concerns because he knew he would still be able to fly home when his trip ended in April.

“I have no problems and no worries whatsoever about showing up at Lester Pearson Airport and saying here I am, and I’m not vaccinated,” said the man. “I’m a Canadian citizen and that’s my country.”

Kerri Froc, a constitutional law expert, said Canadians’ right of entry is enshrined in our Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

“You have the right to come into Canada if you’re a citizen because is basically trying to not have a situation where someone is stateless,” said Froc, an associate law professor at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton.

“It’s a very fundamental human right.”

However, she said the government can, within reason, make returning home more difficult for unvaccinated travellers. Currently, those travellers face stricter entry requirements: they must take a COVID-19 test upon arrival, self-isolate for 14 days, and take a second test while in quarantine.

Vaccine Efficacy Effectiveness And Protection

This article is part of a series of explainers on vaccine development and distribution. Learn more about vaccines from how they work and how theyre made to ensuring safety and equitable access in WHOs Vaccines Explained series.

COVID-19 vaccines have proven to be safe, effective and life-saving. Like all vaccines, they do not fully protect everyone who is vaccinated, and we do not yet know how well they can prevent people from transmitting the virus to others. So as well as getting vaccinated, we must also continue with other measures to fight the pandemic.

Which Vaccines Are In Use

vaccine angels can only do so much us struggles to make

The vaccine produced by Pfizer and BioNTech was the first approved by the WHO, followed by several others.

The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine is now the most widely used around the globe.

Unlike Pfizer’s jab – which has to be kept at an extremely cold temperature – the Oxford vaccine can be stored in a normal fridge, which makes it easier to distribute.

Most governments have started with doses for the over-60s, health workers and people who are clinically vulnerable. After priority groups have been vaccinated, there is a wider rollout among younger age groups.

The Pfizer vaccine has been approved for 12 to 15-year-olds in the US, UK, Europe and other countries. The Sinovac vaccine is being used for children as young as three in China and Colombia.

Early studies suggest the newly identified Omicron variant of coronavirus is better able to evade vaccine protection than previous strains, though vaccination still offers strong protection against serious illness and hospitalisation.

A third ‘booster’ dose of a vaccine does appear to offer protection against infection from Omicron and at least 89 countries have begun booster vaccination programmes.

Worldwide, more than 100 possible vaccines are undergoing trials to test their efficacy and safety.

Cardona Urges Schools To Invest In Extra Tutoring

Miguel Cardona, the education secretary, said reopening the nations schools without addressing the time lost from learning during the pandemic would be insufficient, and called on schools to use federal stimulus funds to invest in mental health counseling and tutoring.

Schools need to go beyond just ensuring they are open to help students during the pandemic and should use federal stimulus funds to increase access to tutoring and mental health counseling, Miguel A. Cardona, the education secretary, said on Thursday.

Mr. Cardona said the department has distributed all $122 billion in American Rescue Plan funding to states. The stimulus money was meant to help schools safely reopen during the pandemic and aid students in recovering academically from the effects of remote learning.

The secretary urged schools to hire more tutors, social workers and mental health counselors with the funds, challenging district leaders to set a goal of giving every child that fell behind during the pandemic at least 30 minutes per day, three times a week, with a well-trained tutor.

Safely reopening schools is just the baseline. Its not good enough, Mr. Cardona said. We must make up for lost time.

Many states and school districts have spent this money very well, Mr. Biden said at a news conference last week. Unfortunately, some havent.

More Than 200 Million People In The Us Are Now Fully Vaccinated Though Deaths And Cases Are Still Rising

The United States reached a significant milestone late Wednesday, with more than 200 million people now fully vaccinated against the coronavirus about 60 percent of the population.

In the past week, an average of 1.92 million doses per day were administered a 35 percent increase over the week before according to data from The Washington Posts tracker.

However, the achievement comes as the nations tallies of daily deaths and new cases rose in the past week and hospitalization rates jumped by 10 percent. The looming threat of the newly identified omicron variant of the coronavirus also hangs over the country as it enters the holiday season.

Omicron cases have been detected in 21 states so far, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tracker, most recently in Texas on Wednesday.

The World Health Organization, drug companies and U.S. health officials have so far said omicron may prove more transmissible than previous variants but potentially cause milder cases of covid-19. However, they have issued strong caveats, saying the data is preliminary and research is ongoing to find out more about the variant, with no firm conclusions yet drawn.

More than two-thirds of the eligible U.S. population has received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while some 24 percent have been fully vaccinated with a booster dose, according to CDC data.
