What Do I Need To Know About Meningitis Vaccines
There are a number of safe, effective vaccines that prevent meningococcal meningitis. The vaccines may cause mild and infrequent side effects, such as redness and pain at the injection site lasting up to two days. The meningitis vaccines are 85 to 100 percent effective in preventing the four kinds of meningococcus germ . These four types cause about 70 percent of the disease in the United States. A newer vaccine protects against type B, which accounts for about one-third of cases in adolescents, and the CDC recently recommended that clinicians may choose to administer vaccine against serogroup B to persons between the ages of 16-23. This vaccine is also recommended for those 10 years of age and older with certain health conditions. While meningitis vaccines are effective against many types of meningococcal disease, they are not 100% effective against all types, and they do not prevent all cases of meningococcal disease.

Measles Mumps And Rubella
New York State public health law requires that college and university students provide documentation of immunity to measles, mumps, and rubella . There are several ways to document immunity. In all cases, the Columbia University MMR form should be completed and submitted to the Immunization Office in Alfred Lerner Hall in person, by mail, or by fax. New York Students Will Need To Get Meningitis Vaccine
ALBANY — Add meningitis to the list of vaccines required to attend school in New York.
Starting next school year, students entering seventh grade be required to receive a meningicoccal vaccine, which protects against certain diseases including a form of meningitis. Before 12th grade, students will have to receive a booster shot.
The new requirement among 40 bills signed into law late Monday by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and was approved despite a lobbying effort by vaccine skeptic Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Cuomos former brother-in-law.
About 1,000 to 1,200 people nationwide contract meningitis each year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .
This new law sends a clear message — we are not willing to lose one more person to a vaccine preventable illness, said Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther, a Sullivan County Democrat who sponsored the measure. Meningococcal Meningitis is deadly, and it moves quickly. Making the vaccination mandatory is not only good policy, its good medicine.
The bill had wide support from the medical community, including the state Medical Society, the March of Dimes and the Association of County Health Officials.
But it drew opposition from Kennedy and those who believe there is a link between vaccines containing thimerosal a mercury-containing preservative and developmental disorders in children. That contention is disputed by the CDC, the American Association of Pediatrics, Autism Speaks and the Institute of Medicine.
Reporting To The Immunization Registry
NYS Public Health Law Section 2168 requires healthcare providers to report all immunizations administered to persons less than 19 years of age, along with the person’s immunization history, to the New York State Immunization Information System , for immunizations administered outside of New York City or to the Citywide Immunization Registry , for immunizations administered within NYC. In addition, Public Health Law Section 2168 requires registered nurses and pharmacists, authorized to administer immunizations, to report immunizations administered to adults ages 19 years and older to NYSIIS or the CIR upon consent of the patient. Other healthcare providers may report immunizations administered to adults to NYSIIS or the CIR upon consent of the patient.

ALBANY, N.Y. – The COVID vaccines, mandates for state and health workers along with the potential for a more universal mandate that includes children are on the minds of many. Its common for vaccines to become part of childhood vaccination schedules as scientific research progresses.
When and what was the last childhood vaccine to become mandated in the state? It may surprise people to learn its been a short five years since New York made a vaccine mandatory for school-aged kids.
Childhood vaccines for polio, measles/mumps/rubella , and DTaP have been mandated by states, including New York, for decades. Other vaccines like Hepatitis B, Varicella , and MenACWY were mandated more recently.
The most recently mandated vaccine for school-aged children in New York is the MenACWY immunization. As of September 1, 2016 students entering 7th or 12 grade had to get the MenACWY vaccine, according to the New York State Department of Health .
Mandatory childhood vaccines vary by state. At the time, DOH said the state was the 28th to mandate the MenACWY vaccine. Now its mandated by 35 states, according to the Immunization Action Coalition . Virginia was the last to mandate the vaccine beginning in 2021 for 7th and 12th graders, according to IAC.

Measles Mumps & Rubella Immunization Requirements
NY State Public Health Law Section 2165 mandates that ALL students born on or after 1/1/57 provide signed documentation of proof of immunity against measles, mumps, and rubella on or after the first birthday. Students will not be permitted to register for classes without proof of Immunization. An immunization hold will be placed on your record, and will NOT be lifted until acceptable proof of immunization is submitted and accepted by the college.
Students born on or after January 1, 1957 who wish to register for more than 5 credits in any single semester are required to have one of the following on file with the College:
*Only ONE of the following is required as proof of immunization:
- Proof of twodoses of the MMR live vaccine, with the first dose given no more than 4 days prior to the first birthday, and the second at least 28 days after the first dose
- Proof of twodoses of the live measles vaccine, with the first dose given no more than 4 days prior to the first birthday and the second at least 28 days after the first dose, AND one dose of the live mumps vaccine received no more than 4 days prior to the first birthday, AND one dose of live rubella vaccine received no more than 4 days prior to the first birthday
- Serological proof of MMR immunity .
Measles Mumps And Rubella Requirement
All students born on or after January 1, 1957 and taking six credits or more must provide documentation of proof of immunity to Measles, Mumps, and Rubella .
You must provide ONE of the following to comply with this requirement:
- Official record that you have received two immunizations against measles, mumps, and rubella. Acceptable forms of documentation include copies from other universities, childhood vaccine records, or copies of electronic chart documentation from a healthcare provider or other institution. or
- A Student Immunization History Form completed and signed by a healthcare provider . or
- Serological evidence proving immunity for measles, mumps, and rubella.

New Law Requires Meningococcal Vaccine For All New York Children Entering 7th And 12th Grades
ALBANY, N.Y. – Beginning September 1, all public and private school students entering 7th or 12th grades in New York State will be required to be vaccinated against meningococcal disease in order to attend school, thanks to a new state law.
Meningococcal disease is a rare but dangerous disease that strikes without warning. It can cause meningitis and sepsis . Even with treatment, an infection can lead to death within a few hours. In non-fatal cases, permanent disabilities can include loss of limbs, hearing loss and brain damage.
“Immunizing children and young adults at these ages is critical to protecting them from this potentially fatal and devastating disease,” said Commissioner of Health Dr. Howard Zucker. “We are fortunate to have a vaccine for meningitis and urge parents to stay on top of their children’s vaccine requirements.”
The meningococcal conjugate vaccine, sometimes called the meningitis vaccine, is the best protection against the disease, which often affects young people. The disease spreads easily in close quarters by coughing, sneezing, kissing, or sharing utensils and cups. The meningococcal vaccine is 85 percent to 100 percent effective at preventing infection with the four types of meningococcal disease that cause the majority of cases in the United States.

Schools And Child Care Programs
New York State Public Health Law Section 2164 and New York Codes, Rules and Regulations Title 10, Subpart 66-1 require every student entering or attending public, private or parochial school in New York State to be immune to diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, measles, mumps, rubella, poliomyelitis, hepatitis B, varicella and meningococcal in accordance with Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommendations. In the 2020-21 school year, meningococcal immunization is required for grades 7 through 12.
Every child in day care, Head Start, nursery school or prekindergarten in NYS must be immune to diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, measles, mumps, rubella, poliomyelitis, hepatitis B, varicella, Haemophilus influenzae type b , and pneumococcal disease.
Public Health Law Section 2164 provides for medical exemptions to immunization.

What Are The New York State School Requirements For Meningitis Vaccines
Starting with the 2016-17 school year, New York State students entering grades seven and twelve will be required to have been administered adequate doses of the meningococcal meningitis vaccine for school entry. Immunization Requirements At Bard
Bard College is mandated by New York State law to enforce this requirement. Bard College submits an annual report to the NYS Department of Health, and is also subject to audits by the State regarding the students’ immunizations.Providing proof of immunization is a preadmission requirement. Students found in violation of this requirement via NYS audit will be billed the fine, which is currently $2000.Immunization and medical forms are due JULY 1st or 30 days prior to your first semester at Bard. Registration for classes may be blocked if the forms are not on file by the start of the semester.
