Fauci Says Gay Men Should Get Monkeypox Vaccine First
Dr. Anthony Fauci, chief medical adviser to the president, has said men who have sex with men should be among those prioritized for the monkeypox vaccine in the United States.
Monkeypox continues to spread around the world, with nearly 17,000 cases reported globally as of July 22, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . Over the weekend, the virus was declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization .
The surge in monkeypox cases has caused concern since it marks the first time the virus has ever spread significantly outside of West and Central Africa, where it is endemic.
It’s possible for anyone to catch monkeypox, though one feature of the current outbreak is that cases have been concentrated among men who have sex with men, and particularly those who have multiple sexual partners, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Saturday.
“It’s therefore essential that all countries work closely with communities of men who have sex with men, to design and deliver effective information and services, and to adopt measures that protect the health, human rights and dignity of affected communities,” he added.
Part of the global strategy to control monkeypox will be with the use of vaccines. The U.S. had distributed nearly 200,000 doses of as of last Wednesday.
This also includes transgender individuals.
How Do You Catch Monkeypox
Monkeypox spreads between people primarily through contact with infectious sores, scabs or bodily fluids, according to the CDC, but it can also spread through prolonged face-to-face contact via respiratory droplets or by touching contaminated clothing or bedding. Research is underway on whether monkeypox can be spread through semen or vaginal fluid.
At least two cases have been detected in children, Walensky told The Washington Post, adding that both are doing well. The investigation into the children’s cases is ongoing, but they’re likely linked to household transmission, the Post reported.
The “close” in close contact is a key element in the transmission of monkeypox. That, along with the fact that the virus that causes monkeypox appears to have a slower reproduction rate than the COVID-19 virus, sets it apart from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Tom Inglesby, director of the Center for Health Security at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said in June at a media briefing.
The majority of the cases in the US recently have been in men who have sex with men, the CDC says. Gay and bisexual communities tend to have particularly “high awareness and rapid health-seeking behavior when it comes to their and their communities’ sexual health,” Dr. Hans Henri P. Kluge, the WHO’s regional director for Europe, said in a statement at the end of May, noting that those who sought early health care services should be applauded.
The Hpv Vaccine And Men Who Have Sex With Men
The longstanding HPV vaccination programme for girls indirectly protected boys against cancers and genital warts linked to infection with HPV because girls would not pass HPV on to them.
MSM have not benefited in the same way from the HPV vaccination programme for girls.
But MSM are at increased risk of cancers linked to infection with HPV types 16 and 18, such as cancer of the anus, penis, mouth or throat.
MSM are also at risk of genital warts caused by HPV types 6 and 11.
MSM up to and including the age of 45 are eligible for free HPV vaccination on the NHS when they visit a specialist sexual health service or HIV clinic.
From 1 April 2022, MSM need 2 doses of the vaccine, given 6 months apart. It’s important to have both doses to be properly protected.
MSM who are HIV positive or have a weakened immune system need to have 3 doses of the HPV vaccine.

What Is Gardasil 9 Vaccine
Gardasil 9 vaccine is used in both females and males.
Human papillomavirus is a sexually transmitted disease that can cause genital warts, cancer of the cervix, anal cancer, various cancers of the vulva, vagina, oropharynx , or head and neck.
Gardasil 9 vaccine is used in girls and women ages 9 through 45 years to prevent cervical/vaginal/anal cancers or genital warts caused by certain types of HPV.
Gardasil 9 vaccine is also used in boys and men ages 9 through 45 years to prevent anal cancer or genital warts caused by certain types of HPV.
You may receive Gardasil 9 even if you have already had genital warts, or had a positive HPV test or abnormal pap smear in the past. However, this vaccine will not treat active genital warts or HPV-related cancers, and it will not cure HPV infection.
Gardasil 9 vaccine prevents diseases caused only by HPV types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58. It will not prevent diseases caused by other types of HPV.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends HPV vaccine for all boys and girls ages 11 or 12 years old. The vaccine is also recommended in teenage boys and girls who have not already received the vaccine or have not completed all booster shots.
Like any vaccine, the Gardasil 9 may not provide protection from disease in every person.

Rich Delgrosso found the lump while shaving. It was on the left side of his neck and it seemed to grow bigger by the day. He made an appointment with his ear, nose, and throat doctor.
He said the odds were 50/50 that it was an infection, recalls the 56-year-old father of two from Pleasantville, New York. I asked, Whats the other 50?
It was a possibility no one wanted to hear: Cancer. Rich underwent a biopsy and learned he had squamous cell carcinoma that had originated on the base of his tongue. His cancer, the doctor told him, was caused by the human papillomavirus .
Rich was shocked. I knew HPV could cause cancer, he says, but I thought it was only cervical cancer in women.
Its true that HPV, a sexually transmitted virus, does cause the majority of cervical cancer cases in women. But it can also cause a variety of cancers in men, too, some of which are on the rise.
HPV led to a five-fold increase of head and neck cancers in young men from 2001 to 2017, according to data released at the 2021 American Society for Clinical Oncology annual meeting.
