Puppies need two initial sets of vaccinations one round at eight weeks of age and another at ten. Your vet will be able to advise you on the best timings of puppy vaccinations its best to take along all of your pets paperwork that you received from his breeder at the time of purchase. Bear in mind that after the initial round of puppy vaccinations your pet will need a booster jag at 6 or 12 months of age.
How Many Times A Year Does My Dog Need Vaccination
In general, most dogs should have an update of some vaccines once a year. Some boarding facilities require bordetella every six months, so we may need to see you mid-year. But for the most part, once a year is adequate for most dogs. And even some of the vaccines, we can extend the time a little bit after a year. Rabies can go to three years in some states, and I think its annual in other states. Its crucial to check in with your veterinarian once a year and make sure you’re up-to-date on all your vaccines.

Side Effects Of The Distemper Vaccine For Dogs
Youll be happy to know that side effects really dont happen very often with the distemper vaccine.
Vaccine reactions are rare, very rare, Dr. Bustamante said. I give hundreds of vaccines in a month, and I … see maybe three vaccine reactions or four vaccine reactions a year.
If dogs do experience side effects of the distemper vaccine, theyre going to be incredibly mild. Common side effects include:
- Mild face swelling
- Soreness at injection site
More serious reactions are even rarer occurrences.
If your pup does end up experiencing side effects of the distemper vaccine, that just means you need to take preventative measures before getting any other shots, since its likely they could also cause a similar reaction in your dog.
Those pets do continue to get vaccines, but they need to get special allergy medications before getting them, Dr. Bustamante.
But you shouldnt let possible side effects keep your dog from receiving the distemper vaccine.
It’s a safe vaccine that can prevent your dog from dying, Dr. Bustamante said. Its a cheap and safe way to protect your dog.

How Do I Know If My Puppy Needs The Vaccine
Some vaccinations are mandatory, while others are simply recommended. The kennel cough vaccination is recommended if your puppy or dog will be in close contact with other dogs.
If your puppy is going to be in kennels or taking part in shows, sports or activities where they could be exposed to kennel cough, its important to tell your vet so your puppy can be protected well in advance.
Dogs Cats And Ferrets
All dogs, cats, and ferrets should be vaccinated and revaccinated against rabies according to product label directions. If a previously vaccinated animal is overdue for a booster, it should be revaccinated. Immediately following the booster, the animal is considered currently vaccinated and should be placed on a vaccination schedule according to the labeled duration of the vaccine used.

How Many Distemper Shots Does A Puppy Need
Then they start getting it from 6 weeks old, every two to four weeks, up until they’re 16 weeks old, Dr. Bustamante said.
Making sure your dog is fully vaccinated against the virus is so important. And the only way that can happen is if hes getting absolutely every dose of the distemper vaccine he needs.
I feel that most of the puppies I’ve seen infected with viruses, even if they’ve received one dose, it’s because owners thought that they were protected and they didn’t know that they were still missing , Dr. Bustamante said.
Dogs of any age can get the distemper vaccine, but its best to start the process in 6-week-old puppies.
Prior to 6 weeks old, vaccines in puppies are not as effective because they interfere with the immunity that their mom gives them , Dr. Bustamante said.
According to Dr. Bustamante, your dog is supposed to get another injection when hes a year old. From there, hell get boosters every so often.
Depending on where you are, sometimes it’s every three years after, Dr. Bustamante said.
If you arent sure whether or not your pup has been fully vaccinated, your vet should be able to help you figure it out.
Whenever you go to your vet … bring all the vaccine records because your vet will see when your puppy was vaccinated, and then will tell you when else your puppy needs future vaccines, Dr. Bustamantee said.
When Do Puppies Need Vaccines
Young puppies need their first course of vaccinations when theyre 6 – 8 weeks old. Known as a primary course, this procedure will consist of 2-3 injections and theyll be administered 2 – 4 weeks apart.
Most puppies bred by a responsible breeder will have had their first set of vaccinations before you bring them home. Your breeder will be able to advise further.

Symptoms Of Parvo In Dogs
Parvovirus symptoms can be pretty serious and even life-threatening.
Signs of parvo in dogs can include:
- Diarrhea
- Lack of appetite
- Fever
- Abdominal pain
Thankfully, dogs who are vaccinated do not tend to develop signs as severe as those who are unvaccinated, Dr. Simon said.
If you notice any of these symptoms, even if theyre mild, bring your dog to the vet right away because parvo can be fatal.

Will My Pet Be Unwell After Vaccination
Vaccination stimulates the immune system, which can trigger a mild fever. This is most commonly seen after initial vaccinations, though it is sometimes seen after re-vaccination. Your pet might be a little sleepy after their appointment: dont be alarmed if this is the case. In most cases, pets feel and behave absolutely normally!
An allergic or adverse response to a vaccination is possible, as with any medication, but very rare. Signs of an allergic reaction may include swelling around the nose or mouth, diarrhoea or occasionally vomiting. If you have any concerns that your pet seems unwell after a vaccination, please contact the surgery for advice.
Pets can go about their normal routine in the run up to their vaccination appointment and after it. There is no need to withhold food before or after, or restrict exercise or activity.

Its always best to ask your vet and take their advice, but generally speaking, you will be able to take your puppy out for a walk 2 weeks after their second jab.
Unvaccinated puppies are susceptible to picking up viruses and infectious diseases, such as parvo and distemper, because they will spend lots of time sniffing and licking as they explore their surroundings.
When you have waited for the amount of time that your vet has advised, your fully vaccinated puppy can go outside and start socialising with other dogs. It’s best to start with short trips, gradually building up to long walks.

Youngest Puppy Rabies Vaccination
So with the rabies vaccines that I’m familiar with, they can definitely be given from as young as four weeks of age, but they will always require that final initial vaccination course booster, or even single vaccination, to be given at 12 weeks of age or older. So if a dog is being vaccinated at a younger age, so at two months here, then they will need a second vaccination at 12 weeks of age or older like I say to also comply with that state legislation. Really, its a risk benefit assessment.
We want to give the vaccinations that a dog needs without over vaccinating. So if the risk of rabies is incredibly low, if you’re actively supervising your young puppy, you’re not letting them mix with wildlife, unknown dogs, or other unknown animals, then giving an earlier vaccine is probably not going to be needed because the risk of them contracting that disease is very low. This is the same idea when considering when to vaccinate for parvovirus, distemper or any other of these vaccine preventable diseases.
If there’s really a low risk then we don’t need to worry about vaccinating them really early.
Jacks Racoon Wrestling Adventure
One sunny morning, Jack, one of JKs dogs, was itching to get outside. It didnt take long to see why. There was a raccoon in the yard.
Jack and the raccoon wrestled. Jack came back indoors with a scratch on his nose. JK quickly looked up distemper symptoms. This raccoon had them all. Glassy eyes, nasal discharge, confused, unstable footing. He stumbled drunkenly right up to the patio doors, oblivious to 3 barking dogs.
Distemper is spread through direct contact as well as airborne exposure. Later JK saw diarrhea on the driveway. She had no doubt the raccoon had distemper. And it had almost certainly exchanged fluids with Jack in their scuffle.
Her 2 dogs had been vaccinated long ago but had no shots in the 6 years shed had them. The other dog was a two-year-old whod had puppy vaccines. She didnt report the incident for fear shed be forced to vaccinate the dogs.
And this incident shows they were protected by those long-ago vaccines, especially Jack. Nobody got sick, and 4 years later, all 3 dogs are alive and well.

Why Puppy Vaccinations Are Important
Mixing with other animals is an important part of their socialisation, but your puppy will need to have their vaccinations before they can go out and about safely. This is to make sure that they do not pick up various diseases before they are protected against them.

How Well Does The Distemper Vaccine Work
The distemper vaccine works very, very well.
Veterinary immunology expert Ronald Schultz PhD proved it. He vaccinated 12-week old puppies with a single dose of distemper vaccine just 4 hours before putting the puppies in a room with distemper-infected dogs.
100% of the puppies were protected against distemper in this challenge study.
Not only that but the distemper vaccine even works after exposure to distemper. It can be given up to 3 days later and still offer protection to healthy puppies.

What Exactly Are Dog Vaccinations

For the most part, there’s a core set of vaccines that we recommend for all dogsparvo, distemper, rabies. But there are some other vaccines, depending on whether the dog goes to dog parks or to boarding a lot. With dogs like this, I’m going to recommend Bordetella, which is kennel cough, and we may also recommend the flu vaccine. There is a vaccine for leptospirosis, and that is also a zoonotic disease. It’s transmitted through the urine of wildlife, rats especially.
If you live in a high rise, the chances of being exposed are much less, but many dogs can be exposed to lepto. But there, again, it just kind of depends on the dog’s lifestyle as to which other vaccines we’re going to recommend.
When Can My New Puppy Go Out And Mix With Other Dogs
You should not take your puppy out or let them mix with other dogs until they have had their second vaccination and have an adequate level of protection. Even at this stage you still need to be cautious about where you take them and what other dogs they mix with.
Its safe to socialise your puppy with other vaccinated dogs. You should avoid places where foxes or other unknown dogs may frequent.

What You Can Do To Make Sure Your Puppy Is Protected
If you feel you must vaccinate your puppy but want to reduce the risk as much as possible, vaccinating once at 16 weeks is a safe and effective approach. In fact, this is how Dr Schultz says he vaccinated his own puppies.
If youre not comfortable with just one vaccine, heres what you can do to reduce the vaccine load a little bit.
Have your vet run a titer test three weeks after the vaccination. If there is circulating antibody , it means your puppy is protected and he will be protected for life.
Its important to note that if you wait until 12 or 16 weeks of age to vaccinate your puppy, you should keep him away from areas where theres a lot of dog traffic just as you would a puppy getting a series of shots.
And ironically, one of the most dangerous places you can take your puppy is the vets office!
If you must bring your puppy under 12 weeks to the vet, its important to carry him in and out of the clinic, as this is one of the most likely places for him to pick up viruses. Your best bet is to get the first appointment of the day, when you know the floors and tables will be at their cleanest.
We dont like to think about it, but vaccination has the very real risk of creating chronic, debilitating disease.
Most vets and dog owners dont see the connection because it can take weeks, months or even years after vaccination for these diseases to develop.
