Walgreens Store Injects People With Saline Rather Than Covid Vaccine In Mix
A Walgreens pharmacy mistakenly administered saline injections instead of COVID-19 vaccines in a mix-up, the company has confirmed.
A spokesperson told local news outlets that a “limited number” of people were affected by the mistake, which occurred at a store in Monroe, North Carolina. Those affected had been informed, Walgreens said, and were offered a vaccine shot for when they were able to return.
“We are investigating what happened and have taken immediate steps to review our procedures with the location to prevent this from occurring again,” the company said in a statement.
A woman who reported being among those affected said that her experience had taken place on March 20, when she and her husband were due to receive the Pfizer vaccine at a store on Fincher Street.
The patient, Lisa Strawn, said she was told a pharmacist forgot to mix the vaccine, resulting in only a saline shot being administered.
“I asked the guy, I said, ‘How did you figure out that we only got saline?'” she told WCCB Charlotte. “And he said, ‘Well at 5:00 when she called me and said she had a lot of vaccine leftover, what was she to do with it?’ and he said ‘You shouldn’t have any vaccine left over,’ so that’s how they discovered it.”
Walgreens was among many companies to suspend the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine after the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended a pause in its administration.

On March 21, a man with a comorbidity reported being denied a vaccine because the pharmacy said it was only serving those 60+ or in childcare or education.
Another said she was asked for insurance, even though neither insurance nor immigration status is required for a vaccine.
There also have been multiple reports of doctors notes requested at pharmacies even though New York State has repeatedly said self-attestation for an underlying illness is enough. At a pop-up at an independent pharmacy in Brooklyn on Sunday, four people were denied vaccines because they did not have required paperwork two returned home to Queens and two waited till the end of the day and received leftover doses. A Queens restaurant worker was denied his vaccine today at a pop-up clinic in Long Island City, despite having an IDNYC card, because the site wanted a license or other proof of New York State residency he also had proof of employment.
Both New York State and New York City have said that self-attestations are sufficient as proof of qualifying medical condition.

At the same time, scientists are warning about COVID-19 variants that are more easily spread from person to person and threaten to undo recent gains against the virus. Some manufacturers are working on vaccine booster shots to combat the new strains of the virus.
President Biden said that conditions can change and variants may make things worse again, but he set a goal of July 4 for returning to semi-normal.
How Are States Adjusting Priority Group Recommendations
In January and February, states responded differently to the push for expanded eligibility. This created confusion and frustration in some areas. Out of necessity, some states stuck to vaccinating only healthcare workers and long-term care residents, while others tried to accommodate the expanding list of priority groups.
As the pandemic raged on, reports of some healthcare workers turning down vaccines and states falling behind on moving supply raised concern that some vaccines were going to waste. As a result, federal health officials in early January began urging states not to stick too tightly to CDCs priority recommendations.
State public health departments can adapt and set their own guidelines to match their populations needs. California and New York were among the first states to announce they would loosen vaccine restrictions while still looking to be fair and protect the people most at risk.
As of early March, nearly half of frontline healthcare workers nationwide hadnt received a single dose of the vaccine, compared with 42% who have been fully vaccinated. Thats according to a survey from KFF/Washington Post. About two-thirds of healthcare workers in hospitals and outpatient clinics have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, but only 26% of those working with patients in their homes have received a vaccine.

Broken Freezers Bent Needles No
The reasons states gave for waste varied, from broken vials and syringes to providers’ storage errors to leftover doses from open vials that couldn’t be used.
The largest waste incidents, in which hundreds of doses were lost at a time, tended to be due to freezer malfunctions or workers’ leaving doses at room temperature too long.
But state records also register the little things that can go wrong.
On Dec. 16, the Public Health Department in Gunnison County, Colorado, lost a single dose of the Pfizer vaccine when someone bumped into a table and a vial spilled. On Jan. 5, the Tri-County Health Department in Westminster, Colorado, reported that it wasted a Moderna dose because a hypodermic needle bent.
Remi Graber, a registered nurse who has vaccinated people at mass sites and community health clinics in Rhode Island, said it’s not uncommon for a vial to have one too many or one too few doses, which can lead to a dose’s being counted as wasted. Syringe problems also sometimes result in waste.
But Graber said the biggest problem is people who don’t show up. Once a vial is punctured, Pfizer’s vaccine must be used within six hours. On April 1, Moderna announced that an opened vaccine vial was good for 12 hours â double what it had been previously.

Feb. 11, 2021 — Walmart, Samâs Club, and Walgreens will begin offering COVID-19 vaccines on Friday through the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program, joining a list of other national retail chains that will give shots to people who want a coronavirus vaccine.
