Third Vaccine Doses Available For Immunocompromised People
More people are now eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine. The State of Florida has lowered the age to receive a vaccine to anyone age 60 and older. And, regardless of age, Publix says that teachers are moving to the front of the line for the vaccine.
In compliance with the U.S. governments guidelines for the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program, Publix will begin prioritizing the following groups for vaccine appointments until further notice:
- Teachers, school staff and child care workers who work in
- pre-primary, primary and secondary schools
- Head Start and Early Head Start programs
Publix will follow this new directive during its next COVID19 vaccine scheduling opportunity in Florida on Wednesday, according to a press release
After those in the prioritized group are finished making appointments, any remaining appointments will be available to other eligible individuals.
Concerns About Unequal Access
The race to vaccinate Floridians is a multi-pronged effort by necessity. Retail chains across the country have filled in gaps in public health infrastructure.
Some of these Publixes have really filled a need, getting into communities in a convenient way, Gov. Ron DeSantis said at a press conference on Feb. 5.
But Publix has not served all Florida residents equally.
In February, Publix offered vaccines first in areas that tended to be both wealthier and whiter than average, according to an analysis using data from the U.S. Census Bureau and lists of Publix stores offering vaccines from Feb. 1 and Feb. 23.
At the start of February, none of the 324 Publix stores offering vaccines were in Floridas eight counties where census data show over 25 percent of residents are Black. By Feb. 23, Publix had opened 36 vaccine locations in two of those counties. The others still had none.
The funneling of so many doses to Publix comes with a backdrop of months of stark disparities in how people from wealthy ZIP codes are getting vaccinated at higher rates than in poorer ones. The Miami Herald has also found that the states vaccination campaign is leaving behind Black residents of South Florida, who have disproportionately low rates of getting shots.
In Palm Beach County, which initially received vaccines solely through 67 Publix locations, the Sun Sentinel reported in January that county commissioners voiced concern that the locations of the stores privileged some residents over others.

As of Sunday, health care workers in Palm Beach County had provided the two Moderna doses or the single Johnson & Johnson dose to 515,047 people, about one-third of the county’s population.
Guests attending the South Florida Fair, which opened Friday, had the option of receiving the vaccine. County administrators purchased 800 tickets for the Health Care District of Palm Beach County to hand out to fairgoers receiving the vaccine.
The health care district handed out 20 tickets in the fair’s first hour, a county spokesman said.

State health officials Sunday announced 3,331 new COVID-19 cases, raising the state’s total to 2,269,806 since the outbreak started
The county’s positivity rate slightly increased, to 4.82 percent, the state’s data shows. Health officials want to see the positivity rate remaining consistently below 5% to declare the pandemic under control.

Publix Giving Covid Vaccines In These Three States
Supermarket chain Publix is now offering COVID vaccinations to eligible residents of at least three states via its in-store pharmacies.
Although vaccine supplies remain limited, the retailer’s website says the program is open in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Some doses have also been administered in Virginia. Publix is using the Moderna vaccine and jabs are provided at no cost to the patient.
Vaccination appointments can only be booked onlineand cannot be held by contacting Publix or the in-store pharmacies directly.
Earlier this month, the company announced that it had administered 300,000 doses across Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Virginia. Here’s how to check if you are eligible to receive the vaccine at Publix and how to book online.
The process can be broken down into six steps:
- Select state
- Identify the next open appointments
- Wait for appointment on state page
- Follow on-screen cues and choose appointment time and location
- Check your confirmation email
All applicants will be asked to provide some personal information, including date of birth, address, email, Medicare ID number if applicable, state and county, as well as an emergency contact name and number.
They will also be asked about any allergies and long-term health history, while proof of residency may need to be shown before the first appointment.

In Georgia, booking is currently all claimed due to demand and limited supply. However, appointments will be posted on the Georgia Publix webpage as they become available. Appointments for Georgia should be able to be booked at this link. If the link doesnt work, go to Publixs webpage here and then click on your state. You are eligible if you are a healthcare worker, first responder, aged 65 and older or a caregiver, or a resident or staff of a longterm care facility.
Where Publix Is Distributing Vaccines
Publixs COVID-19 vaccine webpage notes that the supply of vaccines is still limited, which means that access and appointment times can be tough to get.
The states where Publix is currently offering vaccinations are:
- Florida
- Georgia
- South Carolina
Each state offers its own booking events. To book an appointment, youll need your date of birth, physical address, email, Medicare ID number if applicable, state and county, emergency contact, and be ready to answer health screening questions.
Publix notes that you should defer vaccinations by 90 days if you received antibody treatment for COVID-19 or delay for 14 days after you received another vaccine. There are additional recommendations for those with positive COVID-19 tests or who have been exposed.

State officials have shipped 70,000 COVID vaccine doses a week to Publixs central distribution hub in Lakeland in Central Florida, without knowing exactly where the shots will go, a Miami Herald analysis of state vaccine distribution data from the past five weeks and interviews with state officials found.
The grocery chain a major financial supporter of Gov. Ron DeSantis is the states single-largest vaccine supplier and receives nearly a quarter of Floridas available doses without providing state officials a store-specific distribution plan ahead of time, according to Jared Moskowitz, the director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, the agency leading the vaccination campaign.
Whats unusual is not that a retail chain with pharmacies is involved in distribution efforts. Its that in Florida, Publix made unilateral decisions about distributing 23 percent of the states weekly doses, the most received by any provider in the state for the past six weeks, according to distribution data obtained and analyzed by the Herald. Public health officials do not know which specific stores receive vaccines until after the shots are administered, Moskowitz told the Herald. The chain reports shots in arms to the Florida Department of Health only after they are given.
Moskowitz said Floridas arrangement with Publix is imperfect but prioritizes getting as many people vaccinated as quickly as possible.

They still have both the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines. Starting Friday though, there will just be one sign-up day each week for each of the shots.
Moderna sign-ups are now only on Fridays at 7 a.m. for appointments on weekdays. Johnson & Johnson sign-ups are Wednesdays at 7 a.m. for appointments on weekends.

This is a change from before, where you were able to sign-up for the Moderna dose on both Fridays and Mondays.
Keep in mind both the Moderna vaccine and Johnson & Johnsons are only available for people ages 18 and older. Also, the Moderna is a 2-dose system, while the Johnson & Johnson is just one dose.

The State of Florida requires individuals receiving their first vaccine dose to provide proof of residency, such as an ID or utility bill.

Coronavirus Vaccine At Publix Pharmacy
Starting Wednesday, January 20 after 6:00 a.m., eligible customers can access COVID-19 vaccine appointment availability beginning Thursday, January 21. This includes the addition of Martin, Monroe, and Palm Beach counties.
Vaccination appointments are scheduled online only. Appointments cannot be made by calling Publix or the Publix Pharmacy. Eligible individuals must make an appointment online by using the online reservation system at publix.com/covidvaccine.

The following persons are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine in Florida, by appointment only:

Booster Shot Recommended For Immunocompromised Individuals
Publix pharmacy locations are now providing third doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to people who need them, the company said in a news release.
The Florida-based grocery chain is offering booster shots by appointment or walk up but is encouraging people to make appointments. Both Moderna and Pfizer booster shots are available and individuals should plan on getting the same vaccine as their previous doses.
Publix and other retail pharmacies across the U.S. began offering third doses following the recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines that recommend people with moderate to severe immunocompromised conditions should receive the third booster shot.
Similar to the second and third shots some symptoms are possible after receiving the booster. Heres what you could expect.
The CDC recommends the following people should opt for a third dose:
- Those who have been receiving active cancer treatment for tumors or cancers of the blood
- Received an organ transplant and are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
- Received a stem cell transplant within the last 2 years or are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
- Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency
- Advanced or untreated HIV infection
- Active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids or other drugs that may suppress your immune response

Publix is telling customers not to come to stores at the end of the night with the aim of receiving the coronavirus vaccine because leftovers are going into the arms of employees.
Our goal is to administer 100% of the vaccines we receive, and have a process in place to administer vaccines to our eligible associates whenever possible, if there are additional doses remaining in a vial at the end of the night, spokeswoman Maria Brous said in an email.
People at a variety of vaccination sites across the state have been able to get leftover doses when a vial must be used within a certain amount of time after opening. For instance, a 31-year-old music teacher from Sanford got the vaccine in January at an Orlando hospital from a batch that was set to go bad.

LAKELAND, Fla., Aug. 11, 2021 To help slow the spread of the coronavirus, Publix Pharmacy is administering the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to eligible individuals ages 12 and older at all in-store locations in Brevard, Duval, Orange and Polk counties in Florida. No appointment is necessary. This is the first time the company is offering the Pfizer vaccine to customers.
Publix Pharmacy continues to offer the Moderna vaccine and has a limited supply of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, both of which are available to eligible individuals ages 18 and older.
Parental consentFor the Pfizer vaccine, in-person parental or legal guardian consent is required at the time of vaccination for individuals under the age of 18.

Other States Handling It Differently
Although no two states are handling vaccine distribution in exactly the same way, Floridas hands-off approach to distributing vaccines through Publix differs from other states.
The grocery store chain Giant provides vaccines at stores in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C.
Delaware tells Giant how many doses the chain will be getting and asks how many should be sent to each specific store, according to Samir Balile, pharmacist and Giants clinical programs manager. Other states simply send doses directly to individual stores, he said.
Its important that jurisdictions work with their retail pharmacy partners to make sure vaccines are equitably distributed and allocated to communities in need, Balile said.
In Pennsylvania, Rite Aid, Topco and CVS all receive vaccines to specific stores based on an allocation plan designed by public health officials, according to Maggi Barton, deputy press secretary for the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
Barton said the health department makes its distribution plan based on providers current allocations, amount on hand for distribution, amount administered, population, percent positivity and death rates.
I dont think that a grocery store chain has the capability to do that kind of analysis, Hladish said.
In Florida, Publix has worked independently of county health departments running vaccination sites overrun with demand.
