On April 23, 2021, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , the U.S. Food and Drug Administration , and the Illinois Department of Public Health lifted the pause on the use of the Johnson & Johnson/ Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine in the United States and Illinois. On April 13, 2021, after six cases of an extremely rare but severe type of blood clot associated with low platelet counts were reported in women who had received the J& J vaccine, the CDC and FDA paused use of the vaccine. This pause allowed the CDCs Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices to conduct an extensive review of what they ultimately found to be 15 cases, as well as inform providers and clinicians about the potential adverse events and how they can be recognized and treated.
The pause was proof that the extensive safety monitoring system is working and was able to detect a very small number of adverse events. The FDA has concluded that the known and potential benefits of the J& J vaccine outweigh its known and potential risks.
People who have received theJ& J COVID-19 Vaccinewithin the past three weeks who develop severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain, or shortness of breath should seek medical care right away.
Safe Convenient And Equitable Access
The number of vaccination sites across the country will match expected vaccine supply. The capacity and mix of sites must also ensure safe, convenient and equitable access to vaccination in the order of JCVI cohort prioritisation. This requires the right clinical protocols, invitation and booking systems and clear public communication.
Vaccinations will be offered at:
Larger vaccination centres
A new approach in the NHS, these are large-scale venues, with higher throughput, using re-purposed venues, including sports stadiums, theatres, and hotels, located within communities to vaccinate large numbers of people. People will be offered an invitation and can book a slot that suits them using the National Booking Service.
Hospital hubs
These are based at NHS trusts, including acute, community mental health and ambulance trusts. They are targeting our health and care workers and will work closely with local authorities, local resilience forums and providers to coordinate rapid vaccination of the workforce. They are also excellent locations for initial deployment of new vaccines, so that all clinical safety issues can be identified and managed before wider roll-out. This has been the approach taken with the launch of the Pfizer/BioNTech and the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccines.

A. While serious allergic reactions were not seen in vaccine clinical trials of thousands of patients, rare allergic reactions to vaccines are possible. What Hasn’t Changed If I Have Been Fully Vaccinated
- You should still take steps to protect yourself and others in many situations, like wearing a mask, staying at least 6 feet apart from others, and avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated spaces. Take these precautions whenever you are:
- In public
- Gathering with unvaccinated people from more than one other household
- Visiting with an unvaccinated person who is at increased risk of severe illness or death from COVID-19 or who lives with a person at increased risk
Bringing The Vaccine To Care Home Residents And Care Staff
There is clear evidence that those living in residential care homes for older adults have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19 as they have had a high risk of exposure to infection and are at higher clinical risk of severe disease and mortality. Given the increased risk of outbreaks, morbidity and mortality in these closed settings, these adults are considered to be at very high risk. The JCVIs advice is that this group should be the highest priority for vaccination. Vaccination of residents and staff at the same time is considered to be a highly efficient strategy.
Since December, we have been taking vaccines directly to care homes. This is a joint effort between the care homes and the primary care network vaccinating teams. Not only has this provided protection from COVID-19, the vaccine has brought a huge lift in mental wellbeing for care home staff, residents and their relatives. Recognising that care home managers know their residents best, local vaccinating teams are working closely with care home managers. This has supported the consent process and helped with understanding practicalities . Packing down the vaccine into allocations of 75 doses has enabled efficient use in large care homes with over 50 beds.

Testing The Vaccine In People
When the company/researcher is ready to begin studies in humans, they compile the results of their laboratory and other preclinical testing, as well as information pertaining to the manufacturing technology and the quality of the vaccine and submit these to FDA in the form of an Investigational New Drug application . FDA evaluation includes an assessment of the preclinical data and a determination whether these tests were conducted according to Good Laboratory Practices. FDA also conducts an assessment of the product, its quality and safety, and the technology to manufacture it, to determine whether it is reasonably safe for testing of the vaccine to move forward in people. Studies conducted in people are known as the Clinical Development stage and typically cover three phases under the oversight of FDA.
Clinical trials are conducted according to plans that reflect FDAs considerable expertise in clinical trial design these plans are called protocols. Vaccines intended for children are generally tested first in adults, with a step-down clinical development program to children and infants.
The phases of the studies may progress sequentially, but it is also not uncommon for the phases of development to overlap.

People are considered fully vaccinated:
- 2 weeks after their second dose in a 2-dose series, such as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines
- 2 weeks after a single-dose vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnsons Janssen vaccine
If it has been less than 2 weeks since your 1-dose shot, or if you still need to get your second dose of a 2-dose vaccine, you are NOT fully protected. Keep taking all prevention steps until you are fully vaccinated.

Ceo Says It’s The 1st Time A Coronavirus Vaccine Designed And Manufactured In Canada Has Begun Clinical Trials
A made-in-Canada vaccine to protect against COVID-19 began human clinical trials Tuesday in Toronto, says the biotechnology company that developed the vaccine.
Providence Therapeutics said three shots will be given to 60 adult volunteers at a clinical trial site in Toronto in the first phase of the trial on Tuesday.
Fifteen of those volunteers will receive a placebo, and 45 will get the vaccine, called PTX-COVID19-B.
Brad Sorenson, the company’s CEO, said it’s the first time a vaccine designed and manufactured in Canada has begun clinical trials. The company has purchased a site in Calgary to mass produce the vaccine.
Vaccines are designed to trigger an immune response in the body. Providence’s product is an mRNA vaccine and is similar to the Moderna coronavirus shot being given to people across Canada.
Quebec-based pharmaceutical Medicago began clinical trials last July of its coronavirus vaccine that is based on another technology. Unlike Providence, a large portion of Medicago’s vaccine doses will be manufactured outside the country, in North Carolina.
Medicago’s vaccine is currently in Phase 3 clinical trials the last stage before it can apply for approval from Health Canada and other regulators to market the product.
Sorenson said Providence designed and built its vaccine last March.
“We went from concept into the clinic in under a year without the same level of support as our peers had.”

Pharmacy Partnership For Long
New York has opted into the federal government’s Pharmacy Partnership for Long-Term Care Program for COVID-19 vaccination. Under the federal program, employees of CVS, Walgreens and other select pharmacies will vaccinate residents and staff in long-term care facilities including nursing homes, much like the do for the flu vaccine.
The program began on December 21, 2020. New York has dedicated doses from our initial allotments to this program and will dedicate future allotments to help complete the program and ensure all residents and staff at long-term care facilities are vaccinated. There are approximately 600 nursing homes across the state that are participating in the program.

A. Dentists, pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians have had their scope of practice extended by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation to allow them to administer the COVID-19 vaccine. Boost Protection With A Third Dose
Vaccine effectiveness against infection may decline over time especially with the highly transmissible Omicron variant but they remain the best way to prevent severe illness and death. Third doses can boost immunity to improve protection and limit spread.
Everyone 18 and older can get a third dose 5 months after their second dose.

Dosing Strategy For Phase : Protecting The Greatest Number Of At
Underpinned by publicly available scientific data (set out in the annex: scientific evidence underpinning decisions on vaccination programme, the JCVI announced on 30 December 2020 that the first dose of either Pfizer/BioNTech or Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine provides substantial protection within 2 to 3 weeks of vaccination for clinical disease, and in particular in preventing severe COVID-19 disease. The second vaccine dose is likely to be very important for duration and sustaining such protection, and at an appropriate dose interval may further increase vaccine efficacy. In the short term, the additional impact of the second dose is likely to be modest and most of the initial protection from clinical disease is after the first dose of vaccine.
In their letter to the profession, the 4 UK Chief Medical Officers agreed with JCVI that at this stage of the pandemic prioritising the first doses of vaccine for as many people as possible on the priority list will protect the greatest number of at risk people overall in the shortest possible time and will have the greatest impact on reducing mortality, severe disease and hospitalisations and in protecting the NHS and equivalent health services.
