Can Colleges Require Students To Get A Covid
According to attorney Andrew Lacy, there’s no question that colleges and universities can legally require students to get the COVID-19 vaccine. The main reason: legal precedence.
“I don’t think this topic is really up for much debate legally,” Lacy said. “Colleges have required vaccines in the past. There’s just so very few types of exceptions that could actually be applied to someone getting out of taking the vaccine.”
All states require vaccines for public school attendance. Students aren’t allowed on most college campuses unless they get vaccinated against viruses such as Hepatitis B, human papillomavirus , and whooping cough.

Mandatory Vaccines Required At Georgian College

Georgian College is the latest post-secondary institution requiring COVID-19 vaccines.
The college announced Friday that all Georgian students and employees who access any college campus or location need to be vaccinated.
The first dose of a Health Canada or World Health Organization approved vaccine will be required by Sept. 7, and a second dose to ensure complete vaccination will be required by Oct. 18.
The college will be releasing the vaccination policy shortly. It will also address the issue of visitors attending any of their campuses or locations.
President and CEO of Georgian College Dr. MaryLynn West-Moynes said Throughout the pandemic, while maintaining delivery of our programs both on and off campus, Georgian has been committed to the health and safety of our students and employees. Its driven our decisions from the very beginning and this decision is no different. West-Moynes went on to say We know widespread vaccination is our best strategy for a safe and more rapid return to on-campus life and Im committed to doing everything we can to make that return a reality for our students and employees. As an academic institution, we also understand our role and responsibility for the greater good and our commitment to protecting the health and safety of the communities we are so fortunate to be a part of and cherish.

I Cant Be Vaccinated Because Of My Health Or My Religion Will I Or My Child Still Be Required To Get The Vaccine To Attend Class
Generally, no, but expect to follow extra rules when you’re on campus. Unvaccinated students may be expected to wear masks, while vaccinated students may not. Those who forgo inoculations may also have to continue taking coronavirus screening tests.
In some cases, students without vaccines may be barred from the campus. For example, Brown University is requiring students who refuse the shots and dont qualify for a medical or religious exemption to continue studying remotely.
Q: What Do I Do If I Do Not Want To Be Vaccinated
Please note: Only those fully vaccinated or in receipt of an approved exemption are permitted to access campus.
Please use the Algonquin College Mobile Safety app to register your vaccine status.
Students will be contacted by a Student Support Services representative to discuss your choice.
Employees will be contacted by a Human Resources representative to discuss your choice.
Please refer to the College HS 16 Mandatory COVID-19 Vaccination Policy Addendum. Please be mindful of the deadline stated in the policy to become fully vaccinated . After October 30, 2021 you will not be permitted access to College campuses unless you are fully vaccinated .
The College strongly recommends that you pursue full vaccination for COVID-19. Being fully vaccinated demonstrates your personal commitment to helping to ensure a safe College community for all employees and students and is the most certain means by which you can reduce the seriousness of health effects from a COVID-19 infection. Being fully vaccinated also helps to assure that your campus experience will not be disrupted, as a result of not being fully vaccinated.
If you have received approval for a bona fide exemption, the following requirements apply:

A still-expanding group of U.S. colleges and universities say students must receive a COVID-19 vaccine before arriving on campus. The first institutions to announce the mandate were private, with Cornell University and Duke University leading the way. More and more universities, private and public, have followed suit. Currently, over 1,000 colleges and universities require the COVID-19 vaccine for residential students.
Most colleges already require on-campus students to be vaccinated against viral diseases like measles, mumps, and rubella. Government agencies suggest that schools may similarly require the COVID-19 shots.
Some state lawmakers and at least two lawsuits argued that inoculation can’t be made mandatory while the experimental vaccines retained their Emergency Use Authorization status, but full FDA approval of the mRNA-based Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine on August 23 has already triggered a surge of college COVID-19 vaccine mandates.
What Do Students Think
Many colleges and universities are on board with requiring students to take the COVID-19 vaccines. But do students agree with that?
According to a recent survey of 1,000 college students by College Pulse, 7 in 10 students believe colleges have the right to require students to get vaccinated before coming to campus.

Millions of Americans have chosen not to get a coronavirus vaccine. But with the shots readily available and virus cases ticking back up in parts of the country, a growing number of employers, universities and businesses are now issuing some form of a vaccine requirement.
Under many of these orders, those who remain unvaccinated, including people who cant get a vaccine because of a disability or conflicting religious beliefs, will instead have to follow strict guidelines like regular Covid testing, masking and social distancing.
I think probably what these companies are thinking for those individuals requiring them to be masked, or constantly tested, is a reasonable accommodation, Joel Friedman, a law professor at Tulane University, said. And thats probably correct.
Another component of the shifting landscape on vaccines is their expected full approval by the Food and Drug Administration. The vaccines are currently administered under an emergency use authorization, so full approval could alleviate concerns over their safety and encourage even more organizations to make them a requirement.
Heres a look at who could ask you to get the vaccine:
Q: Who Does The Mandatory Vaccination Policy Affect
All learners, employees, contractors and visitors will require proof of COVID-19 vaccination unless exempted in order to attend in-person activities at our campuses in Ottawa, Pembroke and Perth as well as ACs Corporate Training location at 700 Sussex Dr. This includes those learners living in our Residence on the Ottawa Campus.
Our vaccination requirement will only impact those who are required to attend in-person academic and support activities or College events. If you are studying remotely and not attending one of our campuses, you do not need to provide proof of vaccination.
Please note these important dates:
- As of now: Those choosing to be unvaccinated will not be permitted access to campus unless they have been approved for an exemption .
- For those requiring access to campus for the 2022 Winter Term, this is the last date you can receive your second shot, meet the 14-day waiting period, and submit your proof of full vaccination.
- First day of the winter term for the majority of full-time and part-time programs. .

Do College Students Support Requiring Covid
Cormac Thorpe, an incoming first-year student at Yale University who took a gap year in 2020, favors requiring vaccines because public schools already mandate immunization for other diseases.
“Colleges requiring a COVID vaccine would show they’re as serious about getting back to more normal college life as they’ve claimed to be,” Thorpe said in an email. “They’ve already taken large safety measures to combat the spread of the virus throughout the past year, and with vaccines being incredibly safe and well-tested, it is the obvious measure to ensure everyone’s safety.”
Tyler Newman, an incoming first-year student at Stanford University, also supports requiring the vaccine.
“The influx of students traveling from many different regions to attend school poses a safety hazard if precautions aren’t taken,” Newman wrote in an email. “Having all students fully vaccinated helps to keep university staff, faculty, students, and residents of the towns and cities in which the university resides safe.”
Red River College Requires Covid

Post has been updated 09/13/2021
From the onset of the pandemic, Red River College has made the health and safety of our students, staff and community our priority.
This has included limiting capacity to essential activities, implementing a mandatory mask mandate in advance of public health orders, and distributing level three masks to address wide-spread issues surrounding variants of concern, along with a robust internal contact tracing protocol to relieve pressure on public health and notify our community sooner to keep them safe.
Thats why today, we are announcing that the College will make vaccinations a condition for students and employees to come on Campus for the fall term, starting Monday, September 20, 2021. The vaccine requirement on Campus will be a staged approach, with first doses required by September 20, 2021 and the second by October 17, 2021. All other existing health and safety protocols we currently have in place will remain.
This policy will include students living in RRCs residence and employees working at all campuses in Winnipeg and at our Regional Campuses.
Over the past year, we have been on the leading edge of implementing public health restrictions that have met or exceeded all recommendations from Manitoba Public Health. That approach has allowed the College to create a safe working and learning environment while delivering the hands-on training our workforce depends on.
We must continue to lead by example.

What About Your College Or University
Yes. And they may have already done so if you attend one of the more than 500 colleges and universities including the university system in states like California, Illinois, Colorado and New York that are making the vaccine an enrollment requirement if students want to take classes in-person this coming semester.
While some campuses are asking students to provide a proof of vaccination, others are incentivizing students with exemptions from mask mandates.
But that doesnt mean everyone is happy. A federal judge upheld Indiana Universitys vaccine requirement last month after a group of students filed a lawsuit. The mandate is also a challenge for international students who may not have access to one of the eight W.H.O.-approved vaccines.
Will More Organizations Require A Vaccine In The Future
Its likely. Mr. Friedman, who anticipates that more businesses will require vaccinations in the future, maintains that the legal precedent for mandating vaccines is already there, its just up to these entities to decide to act on it.
Its not a legal decision, he said. Its a political and economic judgment that these companies are making.

Covid Vaccine On Campus
During the 2020 COVID-19 outbreak many colleges moved to online college classes. As states reopen, universities are welcoming students back on campus. Some schools require that students receive the vaccine before resuming regular classes. Students should research their current school policies on the COVID vaccine.
Currently, there are three different vaccines available. The Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna both require two doses to be considered fully vaccinated. The Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine has resumed in the United States and requires one dose. Below are three vaccine finders that allow students to locate vaccination sites. Students should also look for their state specific vaccine finder.
Can Your Employer Require You To Get The Vaccine
The short answer is yes, though a vast majority have not.
Any company is within its legal rights to require employees get vaccinated, barring any conflicting disability or religious belief, according to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
Walmart, the nations largest private employer, is requiring that about 17,000 workers in its headquarters but not the bulk of its 1.6 million American workers receive a vaccine.
The Walt Disney Company, Google, Facebook, Tyson Foods and Uber are some of the other large companies requiring at least some of their employees to be vaccinated.
State governments and the Biden administration have also issued vaccine mandates in their capacity as employers, but not in a way that affects the general public.
As many as seven million federal workers are now required to show proof of vaccination, under new guidelines announced by President Biden in late July. If they do not, theyll have to follow strict rules on mandatory masking, weekly testing and social distancing. The military said it would follow suit with its employees.
States like North Carolina, New York and California are also requiring their state employees do the same. And mandatory vaccination orders are also popping up for workers in state hospital systems across the country. This includes most hospitals in Massachusetts, some in South Carolina and others in North Carolina.

Students Protest Mandatory Covid Vaccinations At Colleges
- In the midst of a public health crisis, hundreds of colleges have already said Covid vaccines will be mandatory for fall 2021.
- Not all students plan to comply.
Across the country, a growing number of colleges and universities have said vaccinations will be mandatory for the fall of 2021.
Now, hundreds of thousands of students will be required to get the Covid-19 vaccine, whether they want to or not.
For the most part, students will get vaccinated if it means campus life can return to a pre-pandemic “normal” by September. But not everyone feels that way.
Roughly 88% of college students plan to get the coronavirus vaccine and nearly 3 in 4 students believe vaccinations should be mandatory, according to a recent survey of more than 1,000 college students by College Finance.

However, Jackie Gale, a rising sophomore at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, is not one of them.
For religious reasons, Gale has never been vaccinated. The 19-year-old attended Alabama public schools and received a religious exemption from the Alabama state health department.
The University of Alabama-Birmingham also exempted Gale from its vaccine requirements during the 2020-2021 school year but won’t apply the same exemption for the upcoming year, according to her lawyer.
Rutgers University, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, said it will now mandate Covid vaccinations for its 71,000 students.
