Preparing Your Child For Vaccines

Getting a vaccine can be stressful for some children. With some preparation and kid-friendly explanation, parents can help to make vaccine visits easier and less stressful. Talk to your health care provider or health unit if you have any questions about the vaccine your child will receive.

Prepare your child before the visit. Be honest. Explain that shots can pinch or sting, but that it wont hurt for long. Tell your child that vaccines are important to keep them healthy.

For younger children

• Hold your child or cuddle them on your lap.
• Use distractions like toys, bubbles, and books.

For older children

• Older children can use distractions like games, books, music, and talking about something unrelated to the vaccination. Deep breathing and/or counting, as well as keeping the arm relaxed and still may help to make the shot easier.
• For children getting their shots at school clinics, tell them to let the nurse know if they feel nervous about getting vaccinated or if they feel faint or light-headed before, during, or after the vaccination. The clinic staff can help them through the process.

Travelling With Children Or Dependents Who Are Not Fully Vaccinated

Unvaccinated children under the age of 12 who are accompanied by travellers who qualify for the fully vaccinated traveller exemption:

• must follow all testing requirements for pre-entry, arrival and Day-8 tests
• are exempt from quarantine as long as they follow the public health requirements outlined in the handout provided at the border

This applies to unvaccinated children under 12 years of age, who are accompanying a parent, step-parent, guardian or tutor who qualified as a fully vaccinated traveller when they entered Canada.

ArriveCAN: include unvaccinated children under the age of 12 as travellers in your submission. Once you fill out the form and successfully upload your proof of vaccination for family members over the age of 12, you will receive an ArriveCAN receipt for the border.

Unvaccinated youth aged 12 through 17 must follow all testing and quarantine requirements, whether or not they are accompanied by travellers who qualify for the fully vaccinated traveller exemption.

ArriveCAN Warning: do not include unvaccinated dependent youth aged 12-17 in your ArriveCAN submission. Complete your submission without them so that you have a receipt for the rest of the group. You will be able to provide the information for the youth before boarding your flight or upon entry to Canada.

The College Vaccine Debate

Most U.S. colleges and universities already require on-campus students to show proof of vaccines for illnesses, like bacterial meningitis, that can spread rapidly in close quarters. But Covid-19 is a much more complicated story.

A growing number of schools will require proof of a coronavirus vaccination for on-campus students this fall, including Cornell, Rutgers, Oakland University in Michigan, Brown University in Rhode Island and St. Edwards University in Texas. Other schools are not requiring vaccines but will offer incentives, such as an exemption from the campus mask mandate.

A day after Nova Southeastern University in Florida announced it would require vaccinations, Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, issued an executive order banning businesses and government agencies from requiring vaccination documentation.

The universitys president and chief executive, George Hanbury, said the Fort Lauderdale-based school was caught off guard, but was reviewing the order. Some Florida counties are working feverishly to inoculate college-age people.

According to Temples website, officials reported that there were 15 confirmed cases and 59 suspected cases bringing the total of infected individuals to 74, which constituted an outbreak by public health standards. Naturally, concerned parents flooded Temples Facebook page with questions regarding the health of their teens.

The Vaccines Your College Freshman Needs

Most parents know what vaccines their children need and at what age they should receive them, but they may not realize that their college-bound offspring need specific inoculations too.

Each state has different vaccination requirements for students, so if your child is going to an out-of-state school, he or she may be missing a few required vaccines. Do College Students Need Mmr

In the U.S., almost everyone receives the CDC-recommended two doses of MMR, the vaccine against measles, mumps, and rubella, as young children. The MMR affords good protection against these diseases, and routine vaccination with a third dose of MMR isnt necessary for all students.

Still, there are some circumstances in which youll want your student to get a dose of MMR before he or she arrives on campus. If for some reason your child didnt receive MMR vaccination at a young age, they should have two doses, separated by 28 days.

Heres why: Although most recent measles outbreaks havent been on college campuses, they are considered high-risk settings. Mumps is sometimes a concern for college students as well. Between 2015 and 2017, two large outbreaks at universities in Iowa and Illinois caused several hundred students to get sick.

The CDC usually recommends that people in communities with an active mumps outbreak receive an additional dose of MMR. A 2017 study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that a mumps booster in an outbreak significantly reduced the risk of infection. For measles outbreaks, the CDC recommends people who arent adequately vaccinated catch up, but people generally dont need an extra dose of MMR if they’re already immune to measles.

Is There A Federal Mandate For Covid

Yes. President Joe Biden recently required all employers with 100 or more employees to make sure their workers receive the vaccine or have a COVID-19 test weekly. The Department of Labors Occupational Safety and Health Administration continues to work on a rule to enforce this. OSHA will also enforce a rule that requires these companies to provide paid time off for the time it takes workers to get the vaccine and recover from any symptoms.

In the meantime, OSHA will issue an Emergency Temporary Standard to impose this mandate.

In addition to the presidents announcement in July about strengthening safety requirements for unvaccinated federal workers, he has signed an Executive Order to require all federal executive branch workers to receive the vaccine. Of course these types of mandates aren’t new, and their legality has been challenged and upheld for nearly a century. In 1925, a student sued the University of California saying he met all the requirements to attend the school except for having a required smallpox vaccination. The judge upheld the mandate. A 2015 law in California requiring vaccines among schoolchildren has also withstood legal challenges.

But current COVID-19 vaccines have been authorized by the Food and Drug Administration under an emergency use authorization, or EUA, which introduces a “new situation” for colleges, says Reiss. “We’ve never had the vaccine for the entire population authorized under EUA before.” So legal arguments have a little asterisk, she says, until vaccines are officially approved by the FDA, which could come as early as this summer.

“There almost certainly are going to be legal challenges because the anti-vaccine movement is already preparing for them,” says Reiss. “The main arguments will include the EUA question and the fact that these vaccines are early .”

Most colleges offer some exemptions to their policies, primarily for medical or religious reasons, though Reiss says that “under previous jurisprudence, you don’t have to give a religious exemption. Because a vaccine mandate is not targeted at religion, it’s generally applicable.”

Those experiencing symptoms of meningitis should seek medical advice immediately. Bacterial meningitis can potentially be fatal within a matter of hours and urgent treatment is vitally important.

Any student under the age of 25 who has several of the symptoms above and suspects they may have meningitis should seek urgent medical attention by calling 999 for an ambulance, or going directly to the nearest A& E department. The closest A& E to UCL’s main Bloomsbury campus is at UCLH.

Even if you’re not sure, if meningitis is suspected it is always best to get urgent medical attention.

What Vaccines Do You Need Before College

College-bound students are about to make the transition to adulthood, but that doesn’t mean that they’re done with vaccines. In fact, lifestyle changes and dormitory living can put college students at higher risk for certain infections.

Here’s a list of vaccines that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends for young adults before they go off to college:

Meningococcal conjugate vaccine: In addition to the CDC’s recommendation that students get vaccinated against meningococcal disease before starting college, some states actually make the shot mandatory.

Meningococcal disease is a bacterial infection that can cause meningitis, or a swelling of the membranes that cover the brain or spinal cord. The bacteria that cause the disease can spread from person to person, and the illness can be life-threatening.

People living in close quarters, including college dorms, are at higher risk for becoming infected with meningococcal disease. Outbreaks of the disease have also been reported on college campuses over the last several years, the CDC said. For this reason, the CDC recommends that the vaccine be given to first-year college students.

Whooping cough vaccine booster: Adolescents should get a whooping cough vaccine booster shot when they are 11 to 12 years old. But if they didn’t get this booster shot as a preteen or teen, they should get one dose of Tdap before college, the CDC said.

Immunization Requirements For Students
