I Live In South Carolina Part Of The Year Can I Get Vaccinated Here

Yes. Non-permanent residents who are living in South Carolina at the time they are eligible to receive vaccine can be vaccinated here, just as South Carolinians staying in another state can receive their vaccine there. There is no need for proof of residency in order to receive the vaccine.

What to Expect

Next Up: Essential Workers Older Adults And People With Medical Conditions

The next priority tiers for coronavirus vaccinations, which the CDC labels 1b and 1c, comprise several other groups. Essential workers who interact with the public and adults over age 75 make up phase 1b. Then, phase 1c includes adults older than 65, people aged 16 to 74 with underlying medical conditions, and other essential workers in finance, information technology and media.

Phase 1b or 1c is where about half the states begin to deviate from the CDC in one or more of the following ways: moving the age for older adults down to 65 prioritizing essential workers over older adults putting older adults and people with underlying medical conditions above essential workers and in one state, North Carolina, prioritizing people with preexisting conditions above both older adults and essential workers.

The CDC estimates there are about 87 million essential workers — a number that appears to include jobs that are both frontline and not. The agency also figured on at least 53 million adults aged 65 and older as well as over 100 million adults with high-risk medical conditions. All told, phases 1a, 1b and 1c represent over 195 million people, or about 60% of the US population.

Here’s a breakdown of the full CDC priority list, in order:

Will More Than One Dose Of Covid

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine requires two shots 21 days apart. The Moderna vaccine requires two shots 28 days apart. You must receive both shots of the same type of vaccine: either two shots of Pfizer or two shots of Moderna. The Janssen vaccine only requires one shot.

Everyone 18 and older is also recommended to get a booster shot of COVID-19 vaccine. Learn more about booster shots and third shots for immunocompromised individuals here.

Do I Need Insurance To Get A Covid

Vaccine Equity Cooperative Health Leads

No. You dont need insurance. A provider can’t deny you a vaccine if you dont have insurance.

However, if you’re wondering why a provider is asking for your health insurance card, its because a provider may get reimbursed for giving you a vaccine. They need your card to seek payment. Your health insurance company or the federal government may pay a fee.

Even if you provide your insurance card, you won’t pay any out-of-pocket costs for a COVID-19 vaccine. You won’t pay deductibles, co-insurance or co-payments.

What Were Not Telling The Public When They Get The Vaccine

Once the size of the COVID-19 crisis was clear, and the obvious measures we could take to stop it politicized, I became convinced that vaccines alone were our best path out of this hellscape. The obligatory selfies posted by my fellow frontline health-care providers getting their shots were a good start. While most of my physician colleagues were clamoring to be vaccinated, many of our other colleagues were less enthusiastic.

All of this, I figured, could be addressed with better messaging and a little educational outreach. That is, until I heard about a physician who got her vaccine and the coronavirus itself in the span of a few days. Now, with access to vaccines expanding to the general public, we will need to go to greater lengths to make sure that benign coincidences like this dont get interpreted and repackaged as something more nefarious than they are.

As a practicing emergency physician in South Dakota treating many COVID-19 cases, she had gone to work the previous week and saw her usual complement of patients. A few days later, with vaccines first arriving at hospitals around the country, she was among the lucky few to get their first dose in mid-December. The onset timing of her COVID-19 symptoms could only mean one thing: She had been infected with the virus a few days before receiving her vaccine.

Which Vaccine Can I Get For My Second Dose

Children ages 5 to 11 years will receive the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for their second dose.

If you are ages 12 to 29 years of age, the Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty COVID-19 vaccine is preferred over the use of the Moderna Spikevax COVID-19 vaccine to start a primary vaccine series and/or to complete aprimary vaccine series. This recommendation is to further minimize the rare risk of adolescents and young adults experiencing myocarditis and/or pericarditis after receiving a COVID-19 mRNA vaccine.

If you are aged 30 years or older and you received a first dose of an mRNA vaccine , you can get either mRNA vaccine for your second dose.

If you are 30 years of age or older and you received a first dose of AstraZeneca/COVISHIELD, an mRNA vaccine is now preferred for your second dose. This is based on emerging evidence of better immune response from this mixed vaccine schedule, and to mitigate the potential risk of Vaccine-Induced Immune Thrombotic Thrombocytopenia associated with viral-vector vaccines. Please review the AstraZeneca/COVISHIELD Information page to help you decide which vaccine to receive.

If emergency-use authorization for the Moderna vaccine comes this month, L.A. County will receive about 240,000 to 250,000 doses of it and the Pfizer vaccine the week of Dec. 21. An additional 150,000 doses will arrive by the end of the month, Simon said.

Those doses will be used to immunize more acute-care hospital workers, as well as some staff and residents at skilled nursing facilities, Ferrer said.

L.A. County has an estimated 240,000 workers at acute-care hospitals, as well as 30,000 emergency medical workers, 70,000 long-term care healthcare workers and staff, 34,000 residents at nursing homes and 64,000 residents at other long-term care facilities, according to the county Department of Public Health.

Thats a total of about 438,000 people who would each need two shots or about 876,000 doses.

The Pfizer vaccine doses need to be administered at least three weeks apart the Moderna doses, four weeks apart. Someone who receives a first dose of the Moderna vaccine cannot complete the course of immunizations with a second shot provided by Pfizer, or vice versa.

The doses that arrive in December will all be first doses, Simon said. He said the county has been told by federal officials that enough vaccine will arrive in January to fulfill the second-dose requirements.

Who Calls For New Studies On Effectiveness Of Smallpox Vaccines Against Monkeypox

Most of the data on using smallpox vaccinations against monkeypox is old, or comes from animal studies rather than human clinical trials, said Dr. Rosamund Lewis, the WHO’s technical lead for monkeypox, at a briefing on Tuesday.

Lewis called for countries immunizing people against monkeypox to track and share their findings so they can learn more about how effective the vaccines are.

Both WHO and Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunization have now released guidelines on what vaccine to use against monkeypox, and who might benefit from it.

Q What Have The Trials Revealed

    Opinion

    A. Through their respective clinical trials, Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna have indicated their vaccines are approximately 95% effective. The pediatric Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was found to be almost 91% effective in clinical trials. The J& J vaccine was found to be more than 74% effective.

Information gathered through clinical trials becomes public in the course of the EUA submission. Once the EUA is submitted, these documents become accessible by the public through the FDA.

While Omicrons subvariants find new ways to evade vaccines and destabilize immune systems, another pandemic has overwhelmed officials who are supposed to be in charge of public health.

Lets call it a plague of willful incompetence or an outbreak of epidemiological stupidity. Or maybe José Saramagos has come to life and targeted public officials with a scourge of blindness.

In any case, COVID, a novel virus that can wreak havoc with any organ in the body, continues to evolve at a furious pace.

In response officials have largely abandoned any coherent response, including masking, testing, tracing and even basic data collection.

Yes, the people have been abandoned.

Lets start with a startling U.S. Veterans Affairs study involving five million people.

How To Get Your Second Dose

As of November 6, 2021, second doses are available at all five City-run clinics by appointment only. Residents can book their appointment online or call the provincial booking system at 1-833-943-3900. Pharmacies, some hospital clinics, some select primary clinics, and community immunization clinics also offer second dose vaccinations either by appointment or walk-in may be available.

If You Received an mRNA Vaccine for Your First Dose

City clinics offer mRNA vaccines and staff will ensure that residents are aware of which vaccine brand they will receive at the time of their appointment. The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are incredibly similar with near identical efficacy rates. A mixed mRNA model mixing Pfizer and Moderna for first and second dose is approved by both the federal and provincial governments. Both vaccines have similar side effects and are safe, effective and interchangeable.

As of September 29, 2021, Ontarios Chief Medical Officer of Health recommends the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for individuals aged 18-24 years old, based on the current available data from Ontarios adverse events following immunization surveillance system. Individuals 18-24 years old can still receive the Moderna vaccine with informed consent. Ontario will continue using the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for youth ages 12-17 .

Q It Took Four Years To Develop The Mumps Vaccine How Can The Covid

    A. Many things helped this vaccine get developed so rapidly. Significant resources were invested to fund the basic research and clinical trials, accelerating timelines greatly. Joining existing trial sites instead of developing new sites was a time saver. The virus has a good vaccination target and relatively low mutation rate. Additionally, the amount of infection in the communities allowed scientists to quickly compare vaccinated to unvaccinated populations and conclusively shows the vaccine worked. Last, but not least, are the huge number of brave volunteers willing to try the novel vaccines during the clinical trials.

Who Should Consider Vaccination Against Monkeypox

Infectious disease specialists say, right now, monkeypox is not affecting the majority of the general Canadian population, although anyone can get the virus if they’re in close physical contact with someone who is infected.

The LGBTQ community, particularly men who have sex with men, are at disproportionate risk of infection in this outbreak, they say. Health-care workers or lab workers who work directly with orthopoxviruses could also be at risk.

As a result, experts say monkeypox vaccinations should be offered to those at-risk populations as a preventative measure. The vaccine can also be offered to those who have already been exposed to someone with monkeypox known as post-exposure prophylaxis.

In both cases, monkeypox immunization outreach needs to be targeted, they say.

“This is not a widespread vaccine for everyone it is risk-based vaccination,” Chagla said.

    Bogoch agreed.

“I don’t think we’re anywhere near starting, you know, vaccine campaigns for the general public,” he said.

“At this point in time, this should be a very focused and targeted vaccine campaign for people who have been exposed and for people who are at the highest risk of getting this infection.”

How Can A Safe Vaccine Be Made So Quickly

Update from the Caribbean Public Health Agency on COVID

Vaccine development usually takes many years, however, scientists had already begun research for coronavirus vaccines during previous outbreaks caused by related coronaviruses, such as SARS and MERS . That earlier research provided a head start for rapid development of vaccines to protect against infection with the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

Q: Once Fully Vaccinated What Should I Keep Doing To Protect Myself And Others

A: You should still take steps to protect yourself and others in many situations, like wearing a mask, staying at least 6 feet apart from others, and avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated spaces. Take these precautions whenever you are:

    • In public
    • Gathering with unvaccinated people from more than one other household.
    • Visiting with an unvaccinated person who is at increased risk of severe illness or death from COVID-19 or who lives with a person at increased risk.
    • You should still avoid medium or large-sized gatherings.

If you travel, you should still take steps to protect yourself and others. You will still be required to wear a mask on planes, buses, trains, and other forms of public transportation traveling into, within, or out of the United States, and in U.S. transportation hubs such as airports and stations. Fully vaccinated international travelers arriving in the United States are still required to get tested within 3 days of their flight and should still get tested 3-5 days after their trip.

You should still watch out for symptoms of COVID-19, especially if youve been around someone who is sick. If you have symptoms of COVID-19, you should get tested and stay home and away from others.

You will still need to follow guidance at your workplace.
