Where Is Yellow Fever A Concern
Yellow fever is endemic in many tropical areas of Africa and South America.
Yellow fever can occur in urban areas when infected people travel from rural or jungle areas into highly populated areas, where the mosquitoes bite infected people and then spread the disease to uninfected people.
A list of countries where yellow fever transmission occurs is available from the World Health Organization .
How Does The Vaccine Work
The yellow fever vaccine causes your immune system to produce antibodies against the virus. Its administered as a relatively painless injection.
If youre in the United States and are planning to travel to an area where yellow fever is common, youll need to get vaccinated at an authorized yellow fever vaccination center.
You can find their locations here.
Originally, a single dose was meant to last for at least 10 years. But in 2013, the World Health Organization announced that a single injection should provide life-long immunity.
Keep in mind that this change still isnt reflected in the International Health Regulations, a legally-binding document put out by WHO. As a result, some countries may not accept a certificate thats more than 10 years old.

Can Yellow Fever Be Prevented

The most effective way to prevent infection from the yellow fever virus it to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes in countries where yellow fever is present.
To avoid mosquito bites:
- stay indoors at dusk and dawn, when mosquitos are most active. The mosquitos that carry yellow fever are active all day
- stay in a screened or air-conditioned room, or sleep under a mosquito net treated with permethrin
- wear covered footwear outside and loose, light-coloured clothing that covers your body
- apply mosquito repellent containing DEET . Use sparingly on children and avoid their hands, eyes and mouth. If you are pregnant, check with your doctor first
- spray mosquito repellent onto your clothes
- use pyrethrum insect sprays or vaporising mats inside
- burn mosquito coils when outdoors
- remove mosquito breeding places, such as any containers holding stagnant water, from around the house
Vaccination is also an effective protection against yellow fever. Most people need only 1 vaccination for lifelong protection. Some people may consider a booster, such as those going to areas where there are ongoing outbreaks and it has been 10 years or more since they were last vaccinated. Children over 9 months can have the vaccination.
To find the nearest approved yellow fever vaccination clinic in your state, visit the Department of Health website.
Even if you have been vaccinated, you still need to prevent mosquito bites. Mosquitoes carry other serious illnesses including malaria, Zika virus and dengue fever.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:
Yellow Fever Vaccine Supply and Provider Certification
The Florida Department of Health is sharing an important announcement regarding yellow fever vaccine supply and provider certification.
Sanofi Pasteur, the manufacturer of the only yellow fever vaccine licensed in the United States , has announced that YF-Vax is readily accessible. The yellow fever vaccine is a liveattenuated virus vaccine that has been around since the 1930s. The number of yellow fever disease cases has been noticeably reduced since the yellow fever vaccine was introduced for the purpose of protection. To provide access to yellow fever vaccine for U.S. travelers, Sanofi Pasteur has coordinated with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration , the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other stakeholders.
Many countries require specific travel immunizations for visitors such as the yellow fever vaccine. Providers interested in administering the yellow fever vaccine need to apply to be approved as a yellow fever vaccine provider and for a yellow fever uniform stamp. The uniform stamp allows the approved provider to officially sign the traveler’s International Certificate of Vaccination . The ICV records vaccinations received and the signature validates this record. Approval as a yellow fever vaccine provider allows the provider to purchase and administer the yellow fever vaccine.

Vaccination And Certification Requirements When Travelling
Countries are able to require proof of vaccination against yellow fever as a condition of entry, at their discretion. These requirements do change on a regular basis and you are advised to seek up to date advice from a travel medicine specialist and/or the relevant country embassy well before you travel.
New Zealand does not currently require proof of vaccination against yellow fever if you are travelling back from an at-risk area, however Australia and other countries commonly visited by New Zealanders may do, so be sure to check the requirements for all countries on your planned itinerary.
A single yellow fever vaccination is now considered to confer lifetime immunity starting from 10 days after administration previously it was considered effective for up to 10 years. The standard International Health Regulation Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis certificate you receive recording the vaccination or any exemption is therefore now valid for life.
Lost Or Destroyed Icvp

If the ICVP is lost or destroyed, a replacement should be sought from the provider site that issued the original certificate. If it is not possible to return to the original provider site that issued the certificate, a replacement certificate may be requested at another authorized yellow fever provider site, however, other sites will need to verify vaccination and no site is required to provide a duplicate. How Can People Reduce The Chance Of Getting Infected With Yellow Fever Virus
Yellow fever can be prevented by vaccination. The vaccine is a live but attenuated strain of the virus. Travelers should also take actions to prevent mosquito bites when in areas of Africa or South America with yellow fever virus transmission.
- Use insect repellent. When you go outdoors, use an EPA-registered insect repellent such as those containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus on exposed skin. Even a short time outdoors can be long enough to get a mosquito bite. For details on when and how to apply repellent, see Insect Repellent Use and Safety.
- Wear proper clothing to reduce mosquito bites. When weather permits, wear long-sleeves, long pants and socks when outdoors. Mosquitoes may bite through thin clothing, so spraying clothes with repellent containing permethrin or another EPA-registered repellent will give extra protection. Clothing pre-treated with permethrin is commercially available. Mosquito repellents containing permethrin are not approved for application directly to skin.
- Be aware of peak mosquito hours. The peak biting times for many mosquito species is dusk to dawn. However, Aedes aegypti, one of the mosquitoes that transmits yellow fever virus, feeds during the daytime. Take extra care to use repellent and protective clothing during daytime as well as during the evening and early morning. Staying in accommodations with screened or air-conditioned rooms, particularly during peak biting times, will also reduce risk of mosquito bites.
