Yellow Fever Outbreak In Brazil Possible Threat To Florida
A large, ongoing yellow fever outbreak in Brazil has the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warning people not to travel there unless they get vaccinated against the deadly mosquito-borne illness.
With Florida being a hub for visitors from South and Central America, some health officials are concerned yellow fever, which is spread by the same mosquito that carries the Zika virus, could make its way to the United States.
Health News Florida’s Stephanie Colombini spoke with Dr. Vilma Vega, Medical Director at CAN Community Health and infectious disease expert, about how concerns regarding yellow fever compare to the panic communities felt during the Zika scare in 2016:
Hundreds of people have died in Brazil this year from yellow fever, including some travelers, none of whom were American. But with Florida being a hub for South and Central American visitors, is the United States at risk?
Yes, there is always a concern that any of these mosquito-borne illnesses can make it to our borders, mainly because we are dealing with hundreds of thousands of travelers every year, especially to the South Florida region.
The theories are far-reaching, all possible. I think our government and especially our airports will be on surveillance because they have been on surveillance for the Zika virus. So they will continue to be on surveillance and now even more so, Im sure, will be monitoring people coming out of Brazil.
What Are The Side Effects Of The Yellow Fever Vaccine
Mild-to-moderate problems:
- Soreness, redness or swelling where the shot was given
- Fever, headache and muscle aches
Severe problems :
- Life-threatening illness with major organ system failure
- Serious allergic reactions, with symptoms including:
- Difficulty breathing
- Dizziness
Over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help ease pain and reduce fever.
It is extremely rare for these vaccines to cause serious harm or death. If the person getting the vaccine has a serious reaction, call the doctor or seek immediate medical attention.
The yellow fever vaccine is available at Walgreens Pharmacy. Ages vary by state.*
If you believe you have a medical emergency, please call 911.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:
Yellow Fever Vaccine Supply and Provider Certification
The Florida Department of Health is sharing an important announcement regarding yellow fever vaccine supply and provider certification.
Sanofi Pasteur, the manufacturer of the only yellow fever vaccine licensed in the United States , has announced that YF-Vax is readily accessible. The yellow fever vaccine is a liveattenuated virus vaccine that has been around since the 1930s. The number of yellow fever disease cases has been noticeably reduced since the yellow fever vaccine was introduced for the purpose of protection. To provide access to yellow fever vaccine for U.S. travelers, Sanofi Pasteur has coordinated with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration , the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other stakeholders.
Many countries require specific travel immunizations for visitors such as the yellow fever vaccine. Providers interested in administering the yellow fever vaccine need to apply to be approved as a yellow fever vaccine provider and for a yellow fever uniform stamp. The uniform stamp allows the approved provider to officially sign the traveler’s International Certificate of Vaccination . The ICV records vaccinations received and the signature validates this record. Approval as a yellow fever vaccine provider allows the provider to purchase and administer the yellow fever vaccine.

Yellow Fever Vaccination In Guayaquil
Hello,
My partner and I are heading for Guayaquil tomorrow and need to get our yellow fever vaccinations and certificates. Can anyone let me know the names and addresses of any of the clinics in Guayaquil where we can get this sorted??
Much appreciated!
for YF and other good health info…
Have fun,
Brandon, I hope you’re aware that it takes ten days for immunity to develop, so if you’re exposing yourself before the ten days you may put yourself at risk.
I don’t know Guayaquil, but there are probably branches of Centros de Salud Pública where you can get the shot and the international certificate for $10 . They only open one vial per day, so if you go late in the day you may be out of luck for that day.
Call your county health department in US. You may not need the shot depending on where you will be going in Ecuador. Are you traveling away from the major cities in Ecuador?
Also Google for info about the vaccine.
I had to get a yellow fever vaccine in Guayaquil before carrying onto Panama. I tried getting it in a smaller city and in a small town , but it wasn.t possible.
Here.s where I got it in Guayaquil:
Direccion Provincial de Salud, located at Panama and Padre Agruirre, very near the Malacon 2000. It involves going to three offices 1. to get the vaccine, 2. to get a receipt to pay for the certificate, 3. the bank to pay for the certificate , and 4. back to the vaccine office to get the certificate.

Yellow Fever Immunization In Bogota
It is possible to get a FREE vaccination / immunization shot against Yellow Fever in Bogota but it is tricky. There is no longer any facility at the new El Dorado international airport to do so. We asked at the info desk and after some discussion were sent to the second floor but there is no Red Cross office there. It seems even the info staff there do not know the airport yet. But it is possible to get the shot at the main bus Transportation Terminal, where there is a Red Cross clinic. However, their hours are limited – Monday through Friday they are open from 9 to 5 with an hour lunch break, but they close at 2 PM on Saturday and are closed on Sunday. If you make it there during their hours, the shot is FREE.
There are also some hospitals to get the shot for a fee of under $50, which is still much less than in the USA.
Note that a Yellow Fever shot is not required to enter Colombia, and most of Colombia outside of the Amazon region is free of Yellow Fever. You also do not need it to enter the USA after visiting Colombia. But if you have the time, and need one for another visit to a yellow fever area, it is worth trying to get it for free in Bogota.
Who Should Get The Yellow Fever Vaccine
- People 9 months of age and older traveling to countries that require proof of yellow fever vaccination
- People 9 months of age and older traveling to parts of South America and Africa where the risk of yellow fever is known to exist
- Laboratory personnel or anyone who may have been exposed to the yellow fever virus or vaccine virus

I have an extended trip planned to Playa del Carmen, and want to get shots in Mexico. Where it will be a lot less expensive than in the US. It’s going to cost me close to $350 in the US for both shots.
Try asking this on the cancuncare.com forum, there are a lot of expats and Cancun residents who post there who may be able to help.
I just got the yellow fever shot a week ago, it was $180 here in Canada and another $75 for the typhoid- which there is currently a shortage of, globally, just to warn you.
