Does It Matter Where You Got Bit

Yes, Trepka explained. To be clear, where means where you were when you got bitten by an infected mosquito, not where the skeeter bit you on your body.

The important distinction is imported vs. locally acquired, she said. Imported means that a person was traveling in a country or area with endemic dengue and most likely was infected there. Locally acquired means that local mosquitoes bit an infected person and then bit another person. That is serious because it means that we may start having a human-mosquito dengue virus cycle in Florida leading to dengue becoming a serious problem here. That is why mosquito control is so critical as part of the response to locally acquired cases.

Obama: Zika Poses Significant Threat, Public Should Take Precautions ...

I’m actually trying to help out family of mine that is currently en route from Argentina to Miami. They are spending a week in Ft. Lauderdale and then 1 week in Freeport, Bahamas. A few hours ago they found out that they need the yellow fever vaccine to enter The Bahamas.

I need someone to help me find them a clinic that does administer yellow fever vaccines for non-americans. Otherwise they risk flying to Bahamas and getting deported back to Miami bc of not being immunized. I’m trying to get as much info as possible so I can make the necessary phone calls/arrangements for them in the morning

Thank you so much for your help

Hello. My daughter to in Hoi An and we too are struggling to get a yellow fever vaccination in order for her to join us in Sri Lanka. Any ideas ? Thanks

I had to go on a bit of a wild goose chase across the city today to find the vaccine. After 4 different hospitals/vaccination centers, I finally found Stamaril at the Center for Preventive Medicine Hanoi, located at:

70 Nguyn Chí Thanh, Láng Thng, ng a, Hà Ni

The staff did not speak any english, so have google translate ready. You will have to go back and forth between 2 different buildings. One building is where the office to sign up for the vaccination is. Then you take a form to the actual vaccination payment office in a second building. Make the payment and take your receipt across the hall to receive the injection. Once we got the first form and figured out what was going on, the whole process only took about 30 min.

Good luck!

What Are The Symptoms

The most common symptom of dengue is fever but people can also feel nauseous, vomit, develop a rash, have muscle, joint and bone aches and unusual bleeding and bruising. Typically, people recover after a week.

Other symptoms include headache, pain typically behind the eyes, muscle, joint, or bone pain, according to Floridas health department.

Severe dengue can occur resulting in shock, internal bleeding and death. Most cases of severe dengue have occurred in Asian and Latin American countries, resulting in a leading cause of hospitalization and death among children and adults in these regions, according to the World Health Organization.

If you or a family member develop the mentioned symptoms, visit your health care provider or local clinic, the health department urges.

Most people infected with dengue have mild or no symptoms. Those that do develop symptoms typically recover after about one week, said the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade.

About 1 out of 20 people who initially get sick with dengue will develop severe dengue, Trepka said.

People at risk of severe dengue include infants, pregnant women, people with chronic conditions such as diabetes, obesity and asthma and, very importantly, people who have had a previous dengue infection that would be more likely in people who have lived in or traveled frequently to countries that are endemic for dengue including many Caribbean and Latin American countries, she said.

Monkeypox: Los Angeles Officials Advise For Residents To Avoid Becoming Infected Limited Supply Vaccine

With the limited supply of the Jynneos monkeypox vaccine, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is issuing a Health Advisory encouraging residents to take precaution to avoid becoming infected with monkeypox.

Although the risk of monkeypox in the general population remains very low based on the information available, Public Health encourages everyone to assess their own risk for monkeypox by considering the ways in which it can be spread and modifying activities that may put them at risk. While exposure to respiratory secretions can lead to monkeypox infection, most reported cases both locally and nationally have been linked to skin-to-skin contact with someone infected with this virus.

Your risk of being exposed can increase when having any kind of sex or other intimate contact, including hugging or kissing, with multiple or anonymous people . Clubs, raves, saunas, sex parties and other activities where there is skin-to-skin or face-to-face contact with many people may also increase your risk of exposure, especially if people are wearing less clothing.

As a reminder, the monkeypox virus can also spread by touching monkeypox lesions on a persons skin touching contaminated objects, fabrics , and surfaces that have been in contact with someone with monkeypox and/or coming in contact with respiratory droplets or secretions from the eyes, nose and mouth from a person with monkeypox.

  • Is Dengue Transmitted Person To Person Like Covid

Dengue is not transmitted person to person the way COVID-19 or monkeypox gets passed.

Rather, dengue is transmitted from person to mosquito to person to mosquito to person. Therefore, anyone who was traveling and got infected while traveling can return back to Florida infectious. This happens not only with dengue but also malaria. Then if Florida mosquitoes bite that returning, infectious traveler, they become infective. They then can bite other people, thereby spreading the virus, Trepka said.

The First Ever Hepatitis E Mass Vaccination Campaign In Bentiu Unity State South Sudan

    By NewsDesk

Hepatitis E is found endemically in countries that have inadequate environmental sanitation. It is most frequently seen in Asia, Africa, Central America and the Middle East.

According to WHO, every year, there are an estimated 20 million hepatitis E infections worldwide, leading to an estimated 3.3 million symptomatic cases of hepatitis E, and 44,000 hepatitis E-related deaths, the highest mortality being in pregnant women.

Now, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières and South Sudans ministry of health are conducting a large-scale vaccination campaign in response to an outbreak of hepatitis E.

The campaign is being carried out in Bentius camp for internally displaced people in South Sudans Unity State.

In March and April 2022, MSF and South Sudans ministry of health jointly carried out the first two rounds of the hepatitis E vaccination campaign in Bentiu. Approximately 25,000 people, including pregnant women, have received the vaccine. A third and final round will be conducted in October 2022.

Hecolin , the only hepatitis E vaccine, was licensed in China in 2012. In its 2015 position paper on hepatitis E vaccines, WHO recommended the consideration of hepatitis E vaccination to control outbreaks, including in pregnant women. As of early 2022, a decade after its initial licensure, this three-dose vaccine had only been used within China for individuals travelling abroad to areas at high risk of hepatitis E.
