Kroger is kicking off its campaign Thursday, offering prizes like $1 million checks and free groceries to motivate more people to get the COVID-19 vaccine.

The #CommunityImmunity Giveaway starts Thursday and runs through July 10 with winners scheduled to be selected weekly.

Officials say the giveaway was created by Kroger Health to support the Biden administrations national effort to have at least 70% of U.S. adults receive their first COVID-19 vaccine dose by July 4.

Since day one of this pandemic, Krogers most urgent priority has been the health and safety of our associates, customers, and communities, said Erin Rolfes, corporate affairs manager, Cincinnati-Dayton division. Krogers #CommunityImmunity Giveaway is designed to inspire more adults to get vaccinated and help our region recover and move ahead.

Kroger Will Give Employees $100 If They Get The Covid Vaccine

Kevin Smith has worked at the Longmont King Soopers for 12 years. He said he was already planning to get the COVID-19 vaccine, but the $100 store credit and 1,000 fuel points from Kroger are a welcomed bonus.

“I always knew I was going to get the vaccine, so it really didn’t change anything, but I was really happy to hear that the company was going to do something for the employees,” he said. “It’s going to be motivating for some of the employees to get the vaccine.”

Kroger, which operates in 25 states, will give all employees who get both doses of the vaccine the credit and points. Employees who can’t get the vaccine for health or religious reasons will have the opportunity to take an educational health and safety course to receive the payment.

COVID Vaccines In Colorado: Your Always Up-To-Date Guide To Finding The Info You Need

Grocery store workers are in phase 1B.3 along with postal and transportation workers and people age 16-64 with two or more conditions that make them high risk for the virus. The state estimates that those in this phase will start getting vaccinated next month.

According to data from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, 13 grocery stores owned by Kroger in Colorado have active outbreaks of COVID-19.

Tim Massa, Kroger’s chief people officer said in a press release that the company has spent more than $1.5 billion to reward and protect employees and to implement safety protocols.

Virginia Kroger Clinic Patients Given Empty Covid

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. A Kroger location in Virginia administered shots with empty syringes to multiple patients scheduled for a COVID-19 vaccine.

A Kroger spokesperson told NewsNation affiliate WRIC that workers at one of their Little Clinic locations made the mistake of administering the shots. They said the health care professional giving the shots was under the impression that a colleague had filled the syringes prior to the appointments.

Less than 10 people got a shot of nothing, according to the spokesperson.

Everyone who did not receive a vaccine upon their first visit was called back to the clinic to receive their COVID-19 vaccine.

The spokesperson said the Virginia Department of Health has been working with them after the incident.

Kroger said the issue was addressed with staff and vaccinators and The Little Clinic workers have been retrained to give vaccines.

We apologize for this oversight and the inconvenience caused for these customers, Kroger said in a statement.

Throughout the vaccination process, clinics at Kroger locations have administered around 836,000 vaccines.

Local residents who heard about the incident offered a mixture of emotions. James Millner, who got his COVID-19 vaccine at the same Kroger location, says he believes mistakes are inevitable.

Another resident voiced concerns, saying she was worried people could be hesitant about getting the vaccine after the mistake.

Will Enough Americans Get Vaccinated

Americans’ reluctance to get the COVID vaccine has diminished in recent weeks, polling suggests.

A Pew Research Center survey released in early December found 60 percent of respondents were interest in getting the vaccine up from 51 percent in September, before any vaccine had been approved for use.

That figure rose to 66 percent in a similar poll conducted in January by SSRS.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the U.S.’s leading immunologist, has estimated that between 70 to 85 percent of Americans will need to be vaccinated for a “dramatic decrease” in cases and to reach herd immunitya state where a significant portion of a population has been inoculated against the virus thus preventing further spread.

Speaking to Newsweek in late December, Fauci said it is “very important to get the overwhelming majority of the people vaccinated.”

That 70 to 85 percent level of vaccination equates to around 230 million to 279 million of the total U.S. population of 328,239,523 people

At least 39,037,964 vaccine doses had been administered to people in the U.S. as of 9 a.m. on February 6, according to the latest U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.

Rolfes said Kroger got about 100 doses of the vaccine for each pharmacy involved in giving the vaccine.

The plan is for Kroger to be a major part of the vaccine distribution process as the vaccine becomes more readily available.

Texas Team Applauded For Giving What Big Pharma Refuses: A Patent

Kroger is giving people that get vaccinated for COVID

A small team of Texas researchers is being hailed for developing an unpatented Covid-19 vaccine to share with the world without personal profit, with some advocates asking, if they can do it, why can’t Big Pharma?

“If we had even a fraction of the support that Moderna had, who knows, maybe the world would be vaccinated by now.”

Dubbed “the World’s Covid vaccine,” the inoculationformally called Corbevaxis an open-source alternative to Big Pharma’s patent-protected vaccines. Instead of being produced for profit, this shot could ultimately be manufactured around the world and made cheaply available to all without governmental or private legal retribution.

Common Dreamsreported this week that Corbevaxdeveloped jointly by Texas Children’s Hospital, Houston’s Baylor College, and the Indian pharmaceutical company Biological E. Limitedwas for emergency use in India amid a surge in infections driven by the highly contagious Omicron variant. Texas Children’s Hospital says the new vaccine is at least 90% effective against the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and 80% or more effective against its Delta variant.

“We’re not trying to make money,” Peter Hotez, who led the Texas Children’s Hospital team, toldThe Washington Post. “We just want to see people get vaccinated.”

“If Texas Childrens Hospital can do it,” he asked, “why can’t Pfizer and Moderna?”
