Can Yellow Fever Be Prevented
The most effective way to prevent infection from the yellow fever virus it to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes in countries where yellow fever is present.
To avoid mosquito bites:
- stay indoors at dusk and dawn, when mosquitos are most active. The mosquitos that carry yellow fever are active all day
- stay in a screened or air-conditioned room, or sleep under a mosquito net treated with permethrin
- wear covered footwear outside and loose, light-coloured clothing that covers your body
- apply mosquito repellent containing DEET . Use sparingly on children and avoid their hands, eyes and mouth. If you are pregnant, check with your doctor first
- spray mosquito repellent onto your clothes
- use pyrethrum insect sprays or vaporising mats inside
- burn mosquito coils when outdoors
- remove mosquito breeding places, such as any containers holding stagnant water, from around the house
Vaccination is also an effective protection against yellow fever. Most people need only 1 vaccination for lifelong protection. Some people may consider a booster, such as those going to areas where there are ongoing outbreaks and it has been 10 years or more since they were last vaccinated. Children over 9 months can have the vaccination.

Even if you have been vaccinated, you still need to prevent mosquito bites. Mosquitoes carry other serious illnesses including malaria, Zika virus and dengue fever.

Simultaneous Administration Of Other Vaccines

No study data are available for simultaneous administration of yellow fever vaccine with other inactivated vaccines. To minimize the potential risk for interference, injectable or nasally administered live vaccines not given on the same day should be separated from yellow fever vaccine by an interval of at least 4 weeks. However, oral Ty21a typhoid vaccine can be administered simultaneously or at any interval before or after yellow fever vaccine.

Who Should Get Yellow Fever Vaccine
Yellow fever vaccine is recommended for people age 9 months or older who are traveling to or living in areas at risk for yellow fever virus transmission in South America and Africa. Proof of yellow fever vaccine may be required for entry into certain countries. Country-specific yellow fever risk information, along with vaccine recommendations, can be found in the Yellow Fever Vaccine Requirements and Recommendations table. For some countries, there are only certain areas where there is a risk for yellow fever for those countries, more specific information is given in the chart to guide the recommendation for vaccination.
What Is The Processing Time And Fee
There are three options and you can choose one.
- Standard processing: This is the basic option, allowing you to apply for the lowest fee possible. USD 20.00 – 24 hours.
- Rush processing: This option is a little faster, but it is also more expensive. USD 35.00 – 8 hours.
- Super Rush processing: Your application form will be processed more quickly, but the price is the most expensive among the three. USD 60.00 – 4 hours.

Side Effects Of The Yellow Fever Vaccine
The yellow fever vaccine can cause some side effects, but the risk of not being vaccinated usually outweighs the risk of having side effects.
After having the vaccine, up to 1 in every 3 people gets:
- soreness at the injection site
These side effects usually pass within 2 weeks.
Rarely, a person can get more serious side effects, including an allergic reaction to one of the ingredients in the vaccine.
A very rare side effect of the vaccine can cause problems with the brain or other organs, which can be fatal. This is more likely to affect:
- people aged 60 or older
- people with weakened immune systems
- anyone who’s had their thymus gland removed or has a thymus gland disorder

Manufacture And Global Supply
The outbreak of yellow fever in Angola in January 2016 has raised concerns about whether the global supply of vaccine is adequate to meet the need during a large epidemic or pandemic of the disease. Routine childhood immunization has been suspended in other African countries to ensure an adequate supply in the vaccination campaign against the outbreak in Angola. Emergency stockpiles of vaccine diverted to Angola, which consisted of about 10 million doses at the end of March 2016, had become exhausted, but were being replenished by May 2016. However, in August it was reported that about one million doses of six million shipped in February had been sent to the wrong place or not kept cold enough to ensure efficacy, resulting in shortages to fight the spreading epidemic in DR Congo. As an emergency measure, experts have suggested using a fractional dose to extend existing supplies of vaccine. Others have noted that switching manufacturing processes to modern cell-culture technology might improve vaccine supply shortfalls. Manufacture of the current vaccine is slow and laborious. A new vaccine under investigation is made by a different means. On 17 June, the WHO agreed to the use of 1/5 the usual dose as an emergency measure during the ongoing outbreak in Angola and the DR Congo. The fractional dose would not qualify for a yellow fever certificate of vaccination for travelers.

Lost Or Destroyed Icvp
If the ICVP is lost or destroyed, a replacement should be sought from the provider site that issued the original certificate. If it is not possible to return to the original provider site that issued the certificate, a replacement certificate may be requested at another authorized yellow fever provider site, however, other sites will need to verify vaccination and no site is required to provide a duplicate. A fee is likely to be charged at any site for a duplicate. If yellow fever vaccination cannot be verified by a provider site, revaccination may be required to obtain another valid ICVP.

Travelers

Some countries may require yellow fever vaccination
Some countries may require proof that youve been vaccinated against yellow fever. When you get vaccinated, ask for an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis, which is proof that you have been vaccinated. The certificate is valid starting 10 days after you get the vaccine.

What is Yellow fever?
Yellow fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic disease spread to people by the bite of an infected mosquito. It affects the liver and kidneys, causing fever and the “yellow” refers to the sign of jaundice that affects some patients which can be fatal.
Other signs and symptoms of yellow fever include headache, jaundice, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting and fatigue.

Travellers should seek medical advice on yellow fever vaccination for their individual medical circumstances, particularly about the suitability of yellow fever vaccine for infants, pregnant or breastfeeding women and those who are immuno-compromised.
If your health care practitioner is of the opinion that vaccination is contraindicated on medical grounds, they should supply you with a dated and signed letter detailing the reasons why you should not be vaccinated. You should contact the embassy of the country to which you are travelling to determine whether the letter needs to be in another language in addition to English in order to meet the entry requirements of the country.

Do I Need A Yellow Fever Vaccination
It is strongly recommended that all travellers be vaccinated for yellow fever if travelling to or from a yellow fever risk country. Refer to: Where can I get a yellow fever vaccination and vaccination certificate.
People who are one year of age or older will be asked to provide an international vaccination certificate if, within six days before arriving in Australia, they have stayed overnight or longer in a yellow fever risk country. People unable to provide a certificate will still be able to enter Australia.
Is The Yellow Fever Vaccine Safe
The NHS, World Health Organisation, U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention and a myriad of other organisations have deemed the yellow fever vaccine safe for use, with very few risk factors. Before any trip the best thing to do is review with the CDC which vaccines, if any, are required or suggested for the regions you will be visiting. We would not risk anything on the opinions of people without any medical training.
We have just returned from Peru having taken a similar route to you with the exception of Mancora . Our local travel clinic did not deem it necessary to have yellow fever vaccine. It was only recommended if going to the jungle.
Do take a good mossie repellant if you are doing the Inca Trail.

Who Should Have The Yellow Fever Vaccine
The yellow fever vaccine is recommended for people from 9 months of age who are travelling to:
- an area where yellow fever is found, including parts of sub-Saharan Africa, South America, Central America and Trinidad in the Caribbean
- a country that requires you to have a certificate proving you have been vaccinated against yellow fever
You should be vaccinated at least 10 days before you travel to allow enough time for the vaccine to work.
If you or your child has had the MMR vaccine, you or they need to wait at least 4 weeks before having the yellow fever vaccine.
If it is not possible to leave a 4-week gap, the yellow fever vaccine should be given but an additional dose of MMR should be considered at a later date. Re-vaccination with the yellow fever vaccine can also be considered on an individual basis for those at on-going risk.
